Some countries still have 50 year old airplanes/cars that run perfectly fine due to maintenance.
Just think that the 30 second session change timer is actually a mechanic quickly taking a look at your ship. --- The Gate: Lol, try targeting me in a fleet fight. The Station: No U. |

The kc-135 (the USAF's major aerial refueling platform) has been active since the 50s.
50 year old airplanes are nothing 'old' - as a matter of fact, there have been very few major design changes in commercial airplanes since the 50s. The boeing 737 you probably flew on last time you flew someplace could be up to 40 years old.

Erm...
Isn't that what REPACKAGE is for - It returns the item to the "as new" state.

Leave the game if you can only think of database burdens. They are not your business. Instead, realize that you are one of those burdens.

hmm the problem is:
Something thats damaged with a very high repai cost [and isn't faction] can just be reprocessed for minerals and stuff
Similar stuff will happen to used T1 ships etc. The prices are very low, just above Insurance payout. A used ship 10% cheaper -> Insurance fraud \o/
If insurancepayout is decreased for used ships, they will reprocess it [Ship mineral cost is very close to sell price, too] and you canot decrease reprocessing amount just because it is used.

Nothing that cannot be fixed. Real insurances always include the age of an item into their calculations anyway. Think of the players who keep their shiny new faction ship or T3 for too long in the hangar or never use it!? I think this it is nice side effect of the idea. -- "Smoke me a kipper. Hmm instead of taking this so far you could just ask for packaged and unpackaged volumes to be the same..
Because of rigs this would make some used ship biz viable..

What is the problem with taking the game further??
Disassembling and reassembling a ship causes one to lose all the rigs and the insurance. The value of a ship however stays the same and no damage is done to it. This is how it is now and is an unnecessary punishment.
With adding an age to ships could the age be reset by disassembling and reassembling the ship. You still would lose all rigs and any insurance you had on on the ship, but will get a fully restored ship in return. This is only fair.
I do not see an issue with the true size of a ship versus its packaged size. You cannot do much with a packaged ship except to transport it. -- "Smoke me a kipper. I'll be back for breakfast." - Ace Rimmer |

Didn't read the thread, so appologies if it has been said. It essentially comes down to the sheer volume of data. Think how Jita gets, the sheer computing power devoted to the markets there. Now imagine if it had to also calculate the variance of age and wear, etc. It is a great idea, true. But simply could become much to complex to effectively impliment.

I've not done much with the market other than buy guns for my ships, but am I incorrect in thinking that you could go to one of the more populated systems and simply put in a buy order for a ship you wanted with a price above the other buy orders, but less than the sell orders for that ship type? |

Please stick to EVE New Citizens Q&A or EVE General Discussion for asking beginner questions. To answer your question: no, you are not incorrect and, yes, you can. The difference is that there is no guarantee if you get the ship for your price and when you will get it. The money you save by buying a single item with a buy order instead of directly buying it often does not stand in relationship with the time it takes. To do sou do you need to plan well ahead of time (i.e. you have the money but not the skill to fly the ship yet). Flying through different regions, asking on the in-game channel "price_check" or checking www.eve-metrics.com can often give you a good deal, too. |

Yes, it has been said and also that this is not our problem. It is CCP's problem and not your business. Just keep paying your subscriptions and let CCP make all our (reasonable) dreams come true. That is how it works. |

There is no guarantee that when looking around for good deals on second hand goods IRL you will find what you need when you need it either.
I sugggested a population center so that you would be more likely to have your buy order filled by someone simply looking to sell at the best price. Time was not a factor in the original question, only the ability to buy goods at a bargain price was-- which is what is really being asked when asking for second hand goods.
The rest of the discussion about putting in a mechanic for wear and tear on used modules and stuff is a side factor to the focus of the original post. I was asking if it was possible to put in a buy order, because it seems to be the obvious solution to what looks to me to be a simple request, yet no one suggested it and I was wondering if there was a reason why that I was not aware of.

Basicly to make this work you'd have to forbid repackaging ships, then the main market would be unable to sell ships, it'd all be through contracts, which means the players who would most benefit from second hand ship, poor noobs, would have to learn about the contract system to take advantage of older ships.
Doing it for modules would probably just be too complicated, nobody would want to go to contracts to buy all the regular bits for your ship.
Not being able to repackage ships would annoy the hell out of people who want to move them about, but to be honest I wouldn't care.
If you were to keep track of this kind of info for ships then you could sweeten the pill by adding other information like numbers of kills (ships can get their own combat log), bounties, previous owners, odometer reading. Then you might have a collectors market for ships which have been involves in kills of certain players.
And of course as ships age you need to spend money to keep them serviced which adds a cash sink to the game, and 'servicing' should be a slow process that takes the ship out of commission for times comparable to the construction time.

I believe the US Air Force is planning on keeping some B52's flying until 2040 - which will make then 80 years old when retired.
