Let's not forget "log into the game to create a character", because without a character created first, you can't post.
so if that is the case what you suggested is completely useless and a waste of time anyway ? so not only are you moaning that they tried something the way you would of done it you would of still came to the same conclusion anyway. i see that no better.
First off, they could hunt for the machines used in the creation of said characters and flag all other accounts with the same details. And no, before you ask, I don't mean IP, I mean the other data CCP silently collects at login time. Stuff like windows product hash ID and other such things.
Second, they could have simply word-filtered the APPROPRIATE words, in this case, ".jpg" and the SITE NAME used in that audrey whatchamacallit thingy (you know, the ACTUAL stuff they're supposed to try to keep us away from) plus ". e x e" (that's a dot in there as the first of 4 characters) if they want to do "prophylactic filetering" instead of "e x e" and "l e x e" (which both make no sense since they're part of many words in common use across this board, and what's the deal with the second one anwyay?). They might have also pre-emptively blocked tinyurl, which they apparently didn't.
Third, I would have never used the fail-captcha they used.
And so on and so forth, as I already explained in the OP... right now, I was merely repeating and clarifying, with little extra info in this post that wasn't already in the OP.
doesnt matter what catcha they use it a human logging in ¼_¼ |

See edit. Ah heck, I'll just copy-paste it. "The point is, they introduced some measures which proved to be ineffective already. At this time, they can either roll them all back, or at least strive to make them NOT ANNOYING for regular customers if they insist on keeping them anyway."
If it's a human logging in, at least use a captcha with LOW human false positives and HIGH machine positives. This one, 1s and Is, then 0s and Os, maybe some others too, they're screwed up - easily machine readable, lousily human readable.

The person that is spamming the board is a human, and as such, can defeat all captcha systems.
This isn't an average forum spammer bot, first they need to make a trial account, obtain a PLEX for it, activate it, and then go spam the forum.
To make something that automatically makes an EVE trial account (which has its own captcha), logs into eve, buys a timecode off the market (isk needs to be sent to it...), activates it... etc etc. They are going to be spending time developing a bot for that when they can pay some dude 30 cents an hour to do it. |

I find myself forced to AGREE with Akita T, scary as that is.
I'd rather have an easy to post on forum and deal with the spam that have to work around these annoying coutermeasures, if the Captcha doesn't go (or they stop requiring such a frequent time-out/re-log-in)I don't think I will be using the forums as much as I used to (and just having to click "log in" all the time was starting to get to me...) |

Block account creation for a week, tell potential customers its due to a "security defect."
If they come back in a week, then try something else. Overkill? Maybe, but still more effective than Captcha. |

Wait, so turning away new customers and fresh money is better than having a captcha? Whatever you are smoking, I want some.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is actually a "get revenge on CCP for banning all my sweatshop employees" ploy meant for CCP to over-react to, damaging itself in the process.

To be honest, if people click on those links without an up-to-date antivirus from an unpatched IE or whatever and/or without browser "paranoia settings", it's kind of THEIR fault

75% chance it is. All the more reason to chase down every SINGLE one of their accounts and ban them ruthlessly. Because they still need billions of ISK to spam the forum because each one requires a PLEX.
It means they still have accounts and assets.

Still no point in having the captchas and filtering what they filtered, no ?

This is an extremely annoying addition to a forum that requires you to login every time you visit it (unless you are visiting it regularly in a short space of time). Quite frankly, it's ******ed.
I am going to ahead and blame Stavros for this one, even if he had nothing to do with it at all. |

Ah, great, CCP finally discovers that EVE is such a great game also because of their community.
So, yeah, let's hurt the community, make it very annoying for them to participate on the forums, make them lose interest in being an active part of the community. Let's beat them until they sHUT UP and STOP POSTING!
GREAT IDEA CCP!!! |

Really, that NEEDS to change.
Damn you edited your post before I could reply.
But your wrong, the captcha isn't to deter players from posting in the forums. It's to protect players from the spammers. It's the wrong approach, but the intention is to protect you, not annoy you. |

/facepalm x 10
I really wish people would stop saying "But they have to set up an account and pay for it for every spammer!!!"
No, they don't. They are spamming "**** links" that leads to keylogger downloads. If you really think the denizens of Eve are smart enough to not click on it, even with all these fail measures, and every person screaming "KEYLOGGER" in every thread.. you're wrong.
Proof is the fact that A) its continuing B) its been happening on WOW forums for years now.
Please do not delude yourself into thinking that Eve players are smarter than WOW players. On the whole, an intellectual fight between the two general playerbase would be akin to blow up sumo costumes.
Idiot clicks on the keylogger. ISK seller gets Idiot's account info. All characters are stripped of assets and liquidated or moved to ISK sellers' accounts. Spammer character is created, and forums spammed until Idiot's account is banned; resulting in more possible accounts being phished.
No PLEX needed. |
