Originally by: Zed Idiot clicks on the keylogger. ISK seller gets Idiot's account info. All characters are stripped of assets and liquidated or moved to ISK sellers' accounts. Spammer character is created, and forums spammed until Idiot's account is banned; resulting in more possible accounts being phished.
And then, they run out of complete morons that click on suspicious links while having unprotected computers/browsers with every bit of built-in security disabled
I mean, out of 11 mil potential idiots and many more constantly coming in, compared to less than 300k potential idiots with far less coming in, EVE actually does have a chance to run out of complete morons, while in WOW, not so easy

Yes, I know what the idea behind that is, but the means are wrong. In the end only the community is getting hurt. That can't be good in any case, no matter what. |

You haven't actually clicked on any of these links have you?
Let me tell you how this works.
You are sent to a fake tube8 page, it says "Hey you can't view this totally awesome video because you have to update your flashplayer." It links you to flashplayer****, which is hosted on the same server, which is where the keylogger is.
So no amount of security is going to save you from human gullibility and the average male's moronic fascination with free porn. |

And shall we discuss the... ahem... rationale behind forcing people to constantly retype their passwords on a potentially keylogged-infected system, in the very same browser session they got infected ?

Originally by: Akita T To be honest, if people click on those links without an up-to-date antivirus from an unpatched IE or whatever and/or without browser "paranoia settings", it's kind of THEIR fault
Yeah but no matter whos fault it is it's still going end up clogging up the petition queue.
But I'm with you on this, this has to be the worst feature ever added. |

They probably just type in your username and hit the "log me in biatch" button. |

I wouldn't mind this so much if CCP had a halfway civilized forum system. One CAPTCHA every two weeks? No big deal, whether it's effective or not. One every few hours is abominable. |

Howdy, capsuleers
First of all, I want to thank everyone for their incredible patience (some more than others ) while we are working to address this really annoying problem.
These attacks are not unique to the EVE community. More and more, we're getting reports from friends in the industry and those who run Web sites that this is happening to them, too.
Please know that we are doing our best to find a quick and failproof solution that will disrupt your posting pleasure as little as possible. We had sincerely hoped that the temporary implementation of the Captcha system would do that and, obviously, it hasn't -- though it has slowed the attacks down considerably.
We have some other ideas in the works now and are pushing as hard as we can to figure out the quickest and most efficient way to get those going. As we move forward, it may be necessary to take the forums offline for a bit. I apologize in advance, and believe me when I say that this would be an absolute last resort. Still, your privacy and the sanctity of your accounts is important to us and if that's what we have to do to protect them, we'll take that step.

Please take it down, and install a proper forum board, and modify it. If we didn't have to keep logging in every two minutes and 6 or 7 times to post, we'd all be somewhat happier! |

Edited by: Seluko on 23/07/2009 23:13:57 I can see the initial logic of the catchpa, even if they did use a horrible one. But the increased word filter is just stupid. It is horribly easy to bypass the thing already.

First problem that comes to mind is that most of those are copylefted, and thus can't legally be used for something for-profit like the official forums for a game that makes tens of millions a year. Still, I agree with the sentiment. |

I have no problem with them going all out to protect things. if they didn't then people would whine that they aren't doing all they could.
It's much easier to ramp up full measures for protection then slowly relax them as the threat passes. |

Generally the idiots who click on the links are the ones with no browser security.. I'm sure just running a good browser with a proper antivirus will stop the keylogger from getting in anyway.
But there's always idiots in the world.
Edit: Also as someone else said, it send you to a fake video that says "You can't jack off to this because you need this random piece of software" and then you get keyloggered. |

Hrmm, wouldn't the easies way to kill off the spammers be to disable links and images? Sure we won't have any shiney sigs but you can still post the link and the reader can choose to copy/paste it if they want. That way we can still have 99% of the forum functionality. |

The problems this board has with bots is NOTHING like the phpbb and vb and other boards have.
Seriously, those boards would be as effective at preventing spam as making a dirt angel on top of a fire ant nest would prevent ant bites. |
