I replied to a topic about adjusting the EVE visuals to enable AA & HDR with the NVIDIA Control Panel. It got a couple of thankyou replies but also a couple of "WTF it didn't work" replies.
So I decided to put together a small visual guide to show how to adjust the quality for EVE via the stock NVIDIA control panel. - No third party software required -
Here it is:
Download (EVE Files) Thankyou Chribba for EVE files.
For those of you who know your way around the NVIDIA CP, or just don't want to download the visual guide here is what I put in my original post:
- Adjust EVE Video options (in client) for image quality, including HDR
- Head to NVIDIA Control Panel
- 3D Settings
- Manage 3D Settings
- Program Settings
- Select EVE Online
- Anisotropic filtering = 16x
- Antialiasing - Mode = Override any application setting
- Antialiasing - Setting = 16xQ
- Antialiasing - Transparency = Supersampling
- Texture filtering - Anisotropic sample optimization = Off
- Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias = Clamp
- Texture filtering - Quality = High Quality
- Texture filtering - Trilinear optimization = Off
Also, if you don't download the visual guide, here is a little note from it:
Quote: Please remember: I am not responsible for any damages that may be the result of following this guide. Do not submit bug reports to CCP about graphical glitches or anomalies if you have adjusted driver options. I will do my best to help anyone that asks, but sometimes it may just be beyond my knowledge to be able to assist.
Even if the guide helps only one person to enjoy EVE more it would of been worth my time. Safe flying, X

It's a mixed bag. AA does work for me in windowed mode, but I take a LARGE performance hit. Others have reported that AA doesn't work at all when running it in a window. Unfortunatly, without lots of users reporting system information I can't make any conclusions about if it is tied to certain generation of cards, a certain driver revision, a particular OS and driver combo, or what?
Perhaps if anyone that tries this could report back with their system information we would get a little table going, but I don't think this thread will get that much attention.
I have included a screenshot of my system information in the guide as a reference.
But here:
Windows 7 RC1 x64 Nvidia Drivers: 186.35 Nvidia GTX 275 AA & HDR in fullscreen = Yes, 16xQ AA & HDR in window = Yes, 16xQ (but AA would need to be lowered in order to be playable on this card)

It's a nice guide, but the next step is still trying to troubleshoot why it does not work for some people. I can of course help, but first I need to get it to work myself. I'll try grabbing exactly your driver, but I have a very distinct feeling that it will not matter at all, based on experience.
It used to work for me with nHancer in the past, but from one day to the next it suddenly stopped working. No video driver update was made at the time, and no EVE patch either. Ever since then, I haven't been able to get it to work - neither with nor without nHancer, neither on WinXp nor on Win7. I have simply no clue why. - |

8800 GTS 512mb with year old drivers, vista 32bit AA and HDR windowed = yes AA and HDR full screen = didn't try
Eve happily chugged away with two clients running, i have though encountered a problem where i can't start eve in anything other than the safe mode option via the games console since making the change.
I've reset the NCP back to the defaults for eve though this has made no change, i'll be updating the drivers for the card tonight and doing the usual clear the cache etc.

I have updated to the latest drivers. So am now running 190.38
The NVIDIA CP appears to hate me. I can not effect EVE application settings from the control panel. Any change will not make any effect.
This was not due to the driver update though. I tried to adjust the settings and lower the AA along with other quality settings before the update, No dice.
I had never tried to change them back before, it was only when I went to adjust them back to make comparision screenshots.
It would be REALLY great, if you decide to make the changes and follow the guide, to provide before and after screenshots along with system information.
I will edit my first post to reflect this and put a bit more of a warning.

So what you mean to say is:
- It works for you with 190.38, except that:
- You can no longer turn AA *off*? - |

I didn't realise the results would be so varied.
I have been playing, after the driver update and reset of the in-game graphics settings. All is well. One thing I have noticed is that shadows are negatively effected.
To be completely honest, I don't think any of the issues can be resolved. If it works for you, I'm happy I could help, if it doesn't, I'm sorry I don't think there's anything I can do.
I will let you decide if it's worth your trouble.
I have taken some screenshots. These have not been touched in anyway. Directly from fraps. They are Minmatar ships so they have plenty of lines and edges.

I tried the method exactly like posted but alas it did the same as always and I had to turn hdr off to get aa to work. 9800gtx latest drivers etc. However I will note the latest release will let me use aa in a windowed client so thats a plus.

i got an 8800gts, i run full screen, i run one client period.
far as hdr + AA not working for some of you you do need to have an 8xxxx series card or better to be able to run AA and hdr at the same time.

Edited by: Dr Jamius on 07/08/2009 03:25:11 Vista Premium 32 bit. 9800GTX+ card. Full screen mode AA+HDR works brilliantly with fps 100-250. Doesn't work with the 190.38 drivers. Never tried windowed mode, I've not requirement to use it.
I use the archived 186.18 drivers.

I have a GTX 295 with the newest drivers. AA+HDR has worked for me before, but this time I can't seem to get even just AA without HDR working. Changing the settings over the nVidia panel did not work, neither does nHancer with Oblivion/Fallout set as AA compatibility option. I tried MS, SS, combined, combined SLI...nothing works.

Edited by: Saint VII on 07/08/2009 14:45:01 Guys. HDR doesn't do anything in this game. There is no sense really in struggling to get it working with AA/AF because it doesn't do anything.
I spent several days roaming the universe looking for ANY scene in which HDR did anything. Here are the results: clickie
The screenshots linked in OP would like exactly the same with HDR turned off. I'm not sure what CCP thinks it is supposed to be doing, but the only thing it accomplishes is to make the bloom effect on solar system backgrounds less severe. And you could accopmlish the same thing by adjusting the Bloom yourself.
I absolutely welcome anyone to show me a pair of screenshots with HDR on and off, that gives any indication that it is anything more than a checkbox in the Settings UI.

Whether this is true or not, I don't know. But with the choice of having either HDR or AA I am going for AA. Like you mentioned, adjusting bloom has a much larger effect on the lighting in game.
At the very least, this thread has managed to let people know how to enable AA. Even if on some drivers you need to disable the in game HDR option.

Saint VII "Guys. HDR doesn't do anything in this game. There is no sense really in struggling to get it working with AA/AF because it doesn't do anything." That's not true I can instantly tell when HDR is on or off there is a massive difference if it's working. If you cannot tell the difference then I would say it's not working on your system.
Ship engines and inside star bases are massively different with HDR. Well depends on the star base its far more noticeable in the bases with lights beams on the platform under the ship pointing directly at the ship. In a blind text I can 100% tell when HDR is off or on.
As for the new drivers I gave up on them. After rolling back to the last version HDR and FSAA again. In fact I couldn't even get FSAA to work without HDR with the new drivers.

OP: I don't know how to put it nicely because you're trying to be helpful, but that's not a helpful guide. Everyone should know how to change 3d settings from the nVidia control panel. The problem is what you are having now; it doesn't work with HDR on.
Before some newer version of Eve (I've been away), you could set the compatibility mode to f000045 and it would work fine, but the preview pane and ship fitting window would not be anti-aliased. Now, the ship fitting and preview windows are anti-aliased and the rest of the game is not. I imagine we could start messing with the numbers again. _ |

It does. Full screen windowed mode, no sync on. Performance is the same than with fullscreen.
Only trouble is that when you boot up another account, the AA stops working straight away. It has been like that since Trinity came and nothing helps it.
Also from fall 2008, I have noticed very irritating cutting on most of the curved objects and edges of objects, nothing can help on this - it's nvidias new 'freature' to make your head explode. Confirmed by nvidia staff. They do not know what is causing it and they can't do anything to fix it. 8800 serie sure is great since it's powerfull, but the quality of textures and graphics is simply terrible.
That problem is most likely the reason why traces were removed from ships and drones in eve..

Its not working.
I have a GeForce 9600 GT
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
Downloaded the latest drivers (190.something)
Went to the Nvidia CP (Yes, the game scroller was on EVE-online, yes, all the options were exactly as you said.)
Had HDR off, all other EVE-online graphic settings set to max.
So, any idea what's wrong? ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari
