Edited by: NeoNeTiC on 09/08/2009 21:27:43 I was greatly disappointed by the part after "What is so great about non-consensual" in the thread title. I expected a more OOPE-ish approach.
Every time this "PVP is too harsh" stuff pops up again I really start to worry, since CCP might one day succumb to it. People do not make extensive threads about "I luvz da fighz0rz in EVE0rz" but start to go to great lenghts to get a discussion about "making the game world nice and cuddly" going. This post is merely a "hi thar, I likez PVPz in da EVEz"-statement.
The fun part about PVP is that you can force your will upon others and thus influence their experience of the game. If you had a singleplayer game with other players around you but zero interaction or influence, it'd be quite boring (aka. PVE-focussed-cuddly-wuddly-space-sim). Imagine trading without the risk of someone undercutting you in the right moment and he's the guy who finds a buyer and you are left with you stuff. It would be awful. Imagine mining without any competition - no one to mine more, no one to exploit the belts before you do, no one to supply others with minerals. Would you think that's desireable? Would it keep you entertained?
It also applies to many other aspects in EVE and why not allow the "phisical aggresion" part aswell?
The thrill while playing EVE is about the inherent danger of the universe around you. It's a harsh world and, like a good thriller or horror movie, enjoyable for the crowd that likes it. Just look at the whole setting, background story, visual design, game mechanics - it does not make the impression to be about peace and should thus not be about "I'm safely mining/trading/traveling/exploring/claiming space/baking cake, teeehee =^_^=".
Take the roughness out of EVE and see it die. You'd be left with a spreadsheet-like space game with mechanics to keep you interested for minutes before realizing the boring grind. The community would shrink and the niche this product fits into gets even smaller.
I for one do not want to see any aspect of "griefing" or "physical harassment" removed from the game. I want to have the freedom to unleash my fury on anyone I feel suitable. I want ragequitters, whiners, corp-theft, piracy, suicide-ganking, spy-games, lies, deceit and the 'fame' people earn from it. It gives me joy (irl)- it spawns emotions of all kinds during my gameplay-experience. The lack of any ultimate consequence, game mechanics wise (not talking about player-driven-decisions), makes it fun to fiddle with the game without being forced to re-roll a character and thus waste years of effort.
There are more entertaining and rewarding games for the PVE-crowd. Just because EVE is one of the few space-MMOs it should not be forced to appeal to PVErs - you can have the new Jumpgate for that.
That's it - you can continue demanding your space-PVE-game now.
