As far as a console port of eve or rebuild / whatever, I highly doubt that CCP would attempt it, I mean consoles are consoles, Eve has been built around the mouse and hotkeys. Sure a controller could substitute, but it wouldn't be very efficient. Text Entry alone would seriously slow things down, how often do u use your keyboard in combination with your mouse?
Eve on a console I'm sure could work, if the ui/control was ingenius. But I wouldn't look toward a TQ compatible shooter version with the sticks controlling the ship, and the reason being is that CCP has long set it's position that every client is supposed to be equal, customer hardware of course can be different, and ui placement is alright, but modifications or differences between clients has always been something CCP has opposed.
But at the same time if they could take TQ to the console, would the eve community/universe really benefit I mean sure more players = more cash for CCP (w00t) but if there's anything I've noticed over the years the majority of new players entering eve don't seem to be in it's best interest, again this is my opinion. So my idea of eve's best interest is completely my opinion and view.
Anyway Eve on Console could be interesting but it'd probably either be gimped all to hell from the UI conversion, require keyboard and mouse to use (consoles do use usb these days), or be a very seperate entity entirely (ie: different server or seperate game using the eve brand)

Hmm interesting thoughts, if i got you right you think there will be a console/FPS game (Dust 541) that is somehow connected to Eve. Maybe walking in stations will be the first step, the preparation or the link for it ? Or the planetary expansion ? You land on a planet, play the FPS game on the surface and can return back to space anytime, while having certain links between the games (shared sp training, shared currency maybe).

I'd expect Hilmar to say very little new regarding Eve - More talk of Walking in Stations, World of Darkness and Eve continuing to progress as it has done the last 5 or 6 years. Why are you expecting some landmark shift in focus of CCP from one keynote speech?
As long as Eve is making money it will keep being developed.
Apocrypha was the first expansion which was made between Atlanta, Reykjavik and Shanghai. When I was at CCP HQ in January, I saw that they obviously had equipment to do voice and video conferencing between these 3 locations.
CCP wouldn't want to do a china-specific project. It's much more likely that they are just focusing the new project's development in China.

maybe its the new sov system :)
though a new trademark makes me think standalone.
what is the point of registering a new trademark then?
ahhh, they finally get to charge for an expansion :)

That's kinda what the speculation revovles around.
A game which does NOT interact with TQ at all would make me sad. CCP can in my opinion not handle a third project like that.
The option of planetary wars is really cool. Planetside is an example of it done semi-right in a way that EVE could use it.
However implementing the game into interacting with TQ could be a challenge. It also faces problems in regards to how a console game, which has a quite different audience, is going to interact with the eve-online community. And it also raises a lot of questions in my mind about the viability of having the markets itneract with each other. Will there be new ISK faucets in the new game? Will there be ACTUAL losses in there? Will these planets be harvest-able? I.e will there be new resources which can be used?
Very complex stuff. I don't expect whatever Hilmar has to announce for another 4-5 years, unless they have held tight about it for an extensive amount of time(At least 3 years).

A couple of things; the Chinese MMO market is massive and they had to set up a China team to modify Eve for it to be playable by law in China. I'm sure their people in China helped with the development of Apocrypha (as did the content guys in Atlanta) but the bulk of work was still done in Iceland because thats where they based Eve, the knowledge is there and I doubt so early on they can afford to (in terms of quality) perform a full knowledge transfer and effectively outsource the game to other 'cheaper' countries. Global teamwork sounds great and all, but the reality is somewhere needs to take the bulk of responsibility for the product.
Now, that said, a new Executive Producer based in China points to a new team and product being based there. I personally doubt they'd set up a new team there if the product wasn't to be aimed specifically/majorly at the Chinese market. Its the logical conclusion, but I may well be wrong and until the veil is lifted by Hilmar we're all just speculating.
Whatever it does turn out to be though I would argue that this will have a small or no impact on Eve (unless it is directly regarding Eve, WIS etc), because CCP is making money with Eve and to neglect that product before other new product revenue streams have established profitability would be very risky indeed. It is more likely them just divesting their eggs into other baskets in case something comes along turning Eve into an omlette.

I'll never understand why people still care about consoles.
In the beginning computers were very expensive, and consoles appeared as a cheaper way for people to play games on them. Now computers are cheap and there's no reason for them. The stupid knobs on the controllers alone should be enough reason to leave the whole thing behind.
CCP better ask themselves before they enter that market if the reason Microsoft and Sony aren't planning another generation of consoles is due to them knowing the age of the console is coming to and end. Would hate to see CCP go down with it.
As for WiS and WoD. It's not rocket surgery, guys. Make it happen in the next 5 years.

At the risk of starting a forum jihad, I'm just curious. What is it that proponent of walk-in-station expect it to add to the gameplay? It's hard for me to imagine how it could be implemented without either (a) creating so much work as to be more advantageous to simply develop a new title, or (b) being strictly a novelty and nothing more.

Why would they make a console game connected to eve that many of us can't even play? Allegedly eve has a lot of players >25 many of which will not own a xbox.
Nothing against new markets etc. i just don't get why they wouldn't try to get a lot of eve players into it by making it a computer game? Especially if its eve-related... --

From what CCP has said, WiS will be a "freebie" from World of Darkness' development. They're already doing all the "hard" work(engine, client, backend, etc.) so they're going to create the art stuff for us a well so we can have fun and give them data on how it handles the load. This is are extrapolation from what little they've said through, so I could be way off the mark. ---- --- --- Devs Sign Here; GMs and ISD welcome to :) |
