Hello fellow Eve players, I hope you are aware that we are now at a the decisive moment in Eve history. I wanted to remind you, that in one week (Tuesday, August 18, 11:20-12:10) Hilmar PTtursson, the CEO of CCP will give the long-awaited information about the future and focus of CCP in his keynote speech at the GDC in Germany. According to a press release, he will share exclusive views into the future, including an announcement on CCP's latest project, suggesting that the opportunity for the game industry to reinvent itself is now.
Why is this decisive for Eve ? John Wood from mmorpg.com included Eve to his list of the top 10 Mmos that have the potential to be something great pointing on potential future Eve projects, such as walking in stations and planetary exploration. It makes clear, that Eve can only continue having success in the long run, if it's constantly developed and worked on.
The keynotes will reveal if CCP will focus on Eve (hopefully with a new project, maybe a surprise like the t3 ships and wormholes, just bigger) or announce that they now mainly work on WoD, which is great for WoD but not so great for Eve. A long period of stagnation in innovation and development can be the end of Eve, in this fast paced Mmo industry.
The second graph on this page already shows a constant decrease of player-online-times in the last months, we are almost down to the level of late 2007. Is this only a temporary summer low point, or is this the beginning of the downfall of Eve ? I think Hilmar's keynotes next week will decide this question, so as I said above, it's a decisive moment, hopefully you are aware of it and keep your finger crossed for Eve.

it should be an interesting gdc, i wathced the last one streaming when i think it was the ceo of steam laying out the future of gaming and digital distrbution, interesting stuff.
eve always had plans to be the space mmo, ambulation and the long off planetary stuff or in both cases "soon" TM.
one thing that is holding eve back is the nightmare of customer service, it is truely the sore spot in ccps record. if you had a billing issue or anything serious your looking at weeks in a que repetitioning to get an answer.
second is the long long development times, maybe they need to consider charging for the major expansions and hiring new staff to accelerate the development and testing schedules, woudl be nice to see planetary exploration and combat before then end of tyhis century and some great eve killer comes along in the next 5 to 10 years.
eve certainly needs work on these areas, even the most hardcore eve defender should look at especially the customer service compared to other mmos and see it is a very very bad part of ccps business model, and if you are unlucky enough to get stuck as a noob with a billing fubar or some other "suspension" issue, you might not even care if eve is an awsome mmo, when dealing wuth cusrtomer support that can make even the most patient and forgiving soul get extreme emo rage.

and not to forget the change in the eve community, we have not only players that want to enjoy eve, we have also ones of that kind who grief away other players and thats then their primary fun. that together with the fact that many long time eve players have quit eve is a fact to worry about. less long time players and newbies getting griefed when entering game ? can ccp allow the misuse of their game mechanics that way ? remember it was already griefer time with the massive empire suicide ganking, until ccp made some adjustments, and right now we see same kind of misuse on the wardec game mechanism, where griefer together with mercenary alliances who are specialized on doing the dirty work for griefers are going for micro corps who are running lab pos as example or small corps who recruit newbies. both easy prey targets, with no protection and no way of getting ingame properly if things keep going like this. its really a demand that empire space dont get like lowsec again, and where smaller industrial corps who really try their best to maintain the community with produced goods and newbies are easy prey for griefers. there is an overhaul needed that protects these players against griefers, one way or the other, making it impossible or make the consequences as harsh as possible, as example.

Edited by: Cors on 11/08/2009 04:23:07 The lack of players online during the summer is NORMAL. It happens every year. If you look at the graphs, the drops are almost instantly when school gets out.
WHY? becuase instead of people logging on after school every day, and playing as much as they could int he few hours before bed, they now have the whole day and can play anytime, so they spread their playtime out over the day. This is normal for summer.
WoD is being done by a seperate team. CCP has been hiring almost constantly for years. I doubt their teams are getting smaller. They ARE getting more efficient.
As long as they are makeing money, they will continue to develop EVE. WoD Will just have a separate team working on it, or they go completely modular with thier staff, assigning them to both projects, moveing them from one to another as modules/parts of the game are completed.
The saying "If you build it, they will come." Well, with EVE, it's if they keep building it, they will keep coming."

Have to agree with the poster above me. At a corporate level activity is low during the summer. People go on vacations, want to be outside more, spend time in real life, etc. Once it gets cold again, college people return to school it will pickup again like it always has. EVE is doing just fine, imo.

It's going to be a console project, without a doubt. You don't need to do a lot of research to uncover that CCP has done agressive hiring in the console field.
And it's going to be making use of the EVE IP. WoD has already been announced, hence it's not going to be that.
Is anybody else than me going to be at scene at GDCE?

Indeed.
People are going to be back and doing FW this month or maybe next, as Apocrypha 1.5 launches. That's going to spike the numbers.
December is going to bring us 0.0 warfare changes. Going to be more people back too.
Next spring we are going to see Walking In Stations most likely. Another spike in numbers will be seen there.
It's a cycle. Can't do a lot about it.

The new "secret" project they are going to announce is "Dust 514", a PS3/X-Box based first person shooter. It is of course related to the EVE universe, hence the Eve-style logo of "Dust 514".

That's the assumption based on what was shown at FF08. But I'd like to think that it's a lot more complex than that.

Id like to think that its alot more complex than that as well. But unfortunately this wont be the case. Id rather walking on planets, than a standalone console game.

How do you know?
I have interacted with some of the people who's actively progressing the EVE IP and planning the future of EVE as a brand. I couldn't imagine they would leave it as a stand-alone shooter.
If it does turn out to be a FPS that has no sort of ties to TQ and the overall experience which we have in EVE right now, I'd be disappointed. But I can't imagine it happening.

All the console references point to a console port of the Eve client. With more and more people choosing the console over the computer for their gaming it makes for the obvious expansion direction.
Eve itself is at an impasse if you ask me. CCP needs to break our urge to blob to promote the PvP they like boasting about having and 0.0 life has to regain its meaning for progress to be made. I do so hope that they have figured out how to sort the sovereignty system to allow for smaller entities to inhabit space should they so choose.
So far they have done nothing (publically anyway) with their acquisition of White Wolf other than harness some of their manpower for Eve projects. My biggest hope is that they are going ahead with a World of Darkness MMORPG. It has all the story and background needed for an outstanding PvP and general questing environment .. without tapping into the SciFi geek clientFle and thus hurting Eve proper. Just imagine a persistent one-server cityscape game in present time with light mystical elements. Werewolves, humans and vampires all split into internally competing factions while waging war on everyone else on top - mayhem beyond even that of Eve (I call dips on the first faction Assault Shotgun!)

you can still bet on the 3rd option, which will automatically win if the other two options (which are, according to you, unlikely) do not win.

Note how they all say MMO console project.
Not all, but they do say console engine.
I'm guessing, long shot, but it could even be a console version of EVE, compatible with the EVE universe.
Which would be fun

All the positions linked by La Vista appear to be in Shanghai, which I'm guessing makes it likely it is a China specific project, or something to do with the China Eve servers.
I'd expect Hilmar to say very little new regarding Eve - More talk of Walking in Stations, World of Darkness and Eve continuing to progress as it has done the last 5 or 6 years. Why are you expecting some landmark shift in focus of CCP from one keynote speech?
As long as Eve is making money it will keep being developed.

Walking in stations will definatly revamp eve's user base. But only if they do it soon, the longer they leave it the less interest it will have in peoples mind until one day "oh they released wis finally did they? ah well, im too stuck into 'x' at the moment"
I understand the need for CCP to "get it right" and release it "when its ready" but I find this notion a bit of a paradox.
After all, Eve's entire history has been, get it out.. fix it, improve it slowly develop, slowly increase subscriptions. If they really do wait until WiS is "ready" then we may never it.
If they waited until Eve as a product was "ready" then it probably wouldnt even be released now.
