Looks like none of you can actually make any logical statments concerning what is so bad about using alts. All you do is fling personal insults. you cant defend your position because you know i'd rip your pathetic arguments to peices.

Edited by: Seto Mazzarotto on 13/10/2004 10:47:36 Myself, I like my alt. I use him for espionage, enemy ship scanning, scouting, and incognito hauling for important cargo.
Edit: I could care less as to whether they abolish alts or not in this game, I'd do with my main what I do with my alts at the moment. It's just that now every enemy my corp is up against uses them in every way possible -- might as well give them back a taste of their own medicine.
And for the Earth & Beyond lamenters -- no offense, but get over your loss already. I played for 18 months myself, I miss it too -- doesn't mean everyone here has to hear about what worked in a PvE game... EVE is another animal entirely.

Alts don't just work for the pirate/griefer, just food for thought.
So what does the alt get out of spying, scouting or scanning for your main?
Do you pay him/her?
Again, alts do things for mains that no main would do for other mains. --------------------------------------------------

Guess I should've updated my post faster.
Outside the grittiest of the game mechanics, alts are wrong. Sadly, everyone I'm up against where I am now uses 'em, and thus so do I. Obviously, rather than paying for a new clone due to sticking my nose in a sector I don't trust, why not use the free one?
Not saying it's really right, just that if it's available and everyone else is, why take the high moral ground and disadvantage yourself?
And to answer your question: Obviously nothing, aside from the warm glow from a job well done. ----------- Fighting for the ideals of freespace, posthuman ethics, and rock & roll. |

I don't think the solution is delete alts, or show them in the employment window.
One solution i suggested in this type of thread is to show transactions between character. A level 3 or 4 agent can give the character transactions list (it containt a list with character name, type of transaction, objects, amount). It allow to find who profit the crime.
Example : Character A scam character B. if character A is an alt he'll give the money to his main character C. Character B ask to his agent to show the list of transaction of character A, he find that character A give a large amount of money to character C. Character B take action against character C.
It's a simple example. it can be more complicated by using multiple Alt.
This idea has a lot advantage. - Scammer, corp thief, ORE thief are less easy than now (the main culprit can be find). they have to create an organisation to hide their main. - you can find the main supplyer of alt corp (alt wars will be a little different when you hit the supplyer).
disadvantage : You have to play detective and use your brain to find the main.

Unless he just gives the money to the front corp he is in, or sends it to a totally innocent person every so often to grief some innocent person when you declare war on the set up guy's corp for no reason.
A few flaws in that suggestion.

Your best answer is going to be "they can use an alt to infiltrate a corp and then steal stuff or give vital data!"
LOL? LOL? LOL? LOL?
LOL?
I think the main and worst thing that alts do to a game is cause the developers to have to code around alts rather then coding for the players.
Having to change a large part of the game system (like missiles) because alts abuse their anonimity and disposability is very bad. The alts get deleted leaving the players to have to deal with the new changes.
Having alts able to steal and scam and grief with impunity means that players in general become more suspicous and untrusting which in turn makes the job of pirates, scammers and theives who don't hide behind alts much more difficult. The alts get deleted leaving the players who pirate, scam and thieve with a much more difficult job.
Alts can go out and steal ore with impunity, CCP codes in new 'Anti Ore Thief Code' which hits me and others who choose to be real (main player) ore theives rather then stupid alts. The alts get deleted and we the real players are left with the ****ty new code.
People make alts to declare wars in empire so that they can have a little gank fest and then delete the characters when they're done. Meanwhile CCP decides to implement 'Anti War Griefing Code' which hits me and others who choose to extort corporations with their main characters. It also hits mercenary corps. Meanwhile the alt war griefers are deleted and the people involved go back to their mains leaving us the real players to deal with a nerfed ****** up system.
Thats what is wrong imo with alts. They cause the developers to concentrate on cheap nasty alt fixes rather then sticking to the original vision for a game.

LOL?
LOL?
If someone uses some alt with 35,000 SP to declare way on me, my friends and I will use our BSes and millions of skill points to crush them in 2 seconds. LOL?
Ore theives... yeah you could waste the time and money to train an alt to be abel to fly an indy and steal ore... your loss. Stealing ore in anything above .4 = TOTAL WASTE OF TIME anyways.... to really make use of your alt in stealing ore you'd have to steal 0.0 ores... which means you will get killed FAST... so again... LOL?
Using an alt to scam someone? Just use your main.. who cares? Sure.. some cowards use an alt "because they can"...but remove alts and they will just use thei main instead..and stay in noob corp/empire space so you can never hurt them. no big deal.
I would LOVE someone to waste their time and money and SP training an alt up to 200,000 SP so it can try and fight me.. LOL.

I found another alt abuse issue today (cost me a scorpion and a hundred mill or so in mods). Making an alt to CEO your corporation when someone declares war on you, then tranferring all your members to a new corporation.
Unfortunately they didn't only do that, one of them who I found switched over just after I had scouted the system. The new corporation uses a logo almost identical to the old one. Dead scorpion.
I should have checked for a orange blip so it was also my fault.
If I declare war again on this new corporation, they will make another alt and switch to a new corp. Effectively blocking me from creating any new wars. When I retract a war to create a new one, they will switch back to the corp I retracted war on
