No, one thing I do see that will happen due to a console game... is the maturity level of eve will decrease. One thing I have noticed, is that parent's are willing to fork out cash for a new Nintendo Wii, PS3, XBOX 360 for their 10 year old kid... while being more reluctant to hand over money for a computer, in general at least...
This being said... a console game will bring in a bunch of kids... sure, some of them might be good FPS players... but if they are directly feeding into OUR universe, do you really want your sov space being dictated by the annoying 10 year old from across the street that nags at your dog, ****ing it off and making it bark for eternity??
I just always preferred Eve over other games (such as WoW) due to it's maturity level. And, in my view, that is now being compromised.

there's no higher maturity level in eve it's full of idiots who're slightly wordier, console players aren't better or worse
the problem is people on another platform affecting the game and having to buy an xbox or whatever to fight them which is gay as ****. if this was released as a PC expansion to eve i'd have no trouble with it

Edited by: Veldya on 19/08/2009 03:42:04 It will come down to how big a role the Dust mites play in the new Sov mechanics. I've always been in favour of sov mechanics which make it harder to control huge quantities of space through the use of occupation as more of a sov element than passing fleets through systems.
At present only a small fraction of the playerbase live outside of Empire, it is difficult for new corps and alliances to grow and expand into 0.0, it overcrowds npc space while you can jump through 20 systems and not run into anyone in conquerable space.
From what I have seen, there will be a big dependency on these "mercs" and that will force some kind of relationship between the MMO entities and the Console entities and I think that will be a negative as the average age of a consoler is significantly lower than the average age of a PC Gamer, and EVE probably has the most mature level of PC Gamer given the learning cliff.
I think some alliances will struggle to relate well with the "Boom! Headshot!" crew. There would be more synergy if EVE was more like Jumpgate Evolution and a FPS in space kind of game. You would then attract both the flight sim FPS fans and the gun based FPS people. EVE attracts two vastly different types of gamers and you are forcing these two groups to form relationships, which might annoy some who don't want to be utterly dependent on third parties and out-of-game elements influencing their game.

CCP is a business, plain and simple. Of course it wants to make more money. But don't forget, CCP has also recently banned 6200 paying accounts for having been involved in the RMT markets. That's a million dollars revenue for the year CCP got rid of ... for you and the integrity of their game.

These are the things we don't know yet, CCP will need to be careful how they balance this. Big or strong alliances will be fine I suspect. The little guys will be hurt the most.

Lot of speculation going on with this topic which is to be expected as CCP has given out wishy-washy info about how it all works.
They need to get the following squared away about DUST 514:
- Do DUST players join corps or are they 'Mercenaries'? - Do Missions play like stories or more just like maps of Call of Duty or BF2 or even TF2? - What is preventing the 'Munckin' factor creeping in where you end up on a team that doesn't want to succeed and 'throws' the game so their 'friends' benefit?
Some of the above will be far too much effort for the console crowd that just want to pick up a new game to play Friday for the weekend and never return to.
CCP knows this, its their business to know this.
I for one will pick it up to have a play. Consoles only hold my attention for an hour most though. Last thing I want to have to do is worry about 'Who' I am playing for. Just want 'Red Team vs Blue Team' please!

Now the time has come for Eve to grow in other directions. And for you to stop whining like a baby about it!

Judging from the snippet of Keynote after the trailer on Golem.de DUST players can form their own corps, but the plan is that those corps can become part of EVE alliances (If I interpreted Hilmar's slide correctly). They want the 2 player communities to merge at some point in the future.

First i'm going to say something;
Shocker! CCP tries to make money!
It's a company, that's what companies do. You'd do the same if you could.
Second i'm going to say this;
All money Dust makes, will enrich EVE as it feeds directly to the EVE support budget, production(such as upgrading and releasing WiS resources to work on EVE) and last but not least, the lastivity of EVE itself.
Third i'm going to perhaps point out the mnost important fact;
Originally by: Aalana We wanted to do something completly different. We wanted a whole new group of players encounter the world of Eve and enrich it. This way we can let player that aren't interested in PC games take part in Eve Online.

And all the pre-butthurt alliance players cried we we we all the way home?
But yeah ccp is doing this for themselves and not us. Though we do get the benefits of thier epic drive to be the best too.

No **** Sherlock. They've only been saying the same thing since, oh, roughly forever. They're also a business, so saying anything else would mean EVE shut down tomorrow.

4. Actually take the game to a new level and employ strategy. Throwing ISK at the problem is how Sov is handled already — Dust will make zero difference in that regard.
Dust is about as horrid an addition to 0.0 sov warfare as the HIC. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

just saying that claiming adding the console crowd to eve is going to lower the maturity level of eve, about made me spit out my can't sleep anyway skrew it cappuccino, the level of crybaby temper tantrums that have flooded the forums with the announcment of dust, is not better or no worse than the xbots on ps3 boards making up arguments and options as fact to trash another system or game.
we do not know how this stuff is all going to mesh together, we do not know exactly how much this is going to play in the grand scheme of sov broken as it is, we do not if the game will be any good, if people will actually play it, how we in eve o impact the battles on the ground if at all, if we need to hold the skies above to actually land dust troops, if it will eventually come to pc or eve o in some form.
we know a few basics there is a fps called dust that is for xbox and ps3, that eve o players will hire mercs to fight on planets, and it will have a effect on sov to a certain degree.
anything beyond those basics is all whole heap of assumptions, and we can discuss what happens when we all assume things, break it down yourselves.
and to flame ccp for wanting to make money, or gasp expand it's player base, let me grab a chair and sit down this is truly shocking news on par with the collapse of the soviet union.

Unless I am wrong ... that is the goal of ANY company. More customers, more money. He's not greedy, he's a good CEO.
Originally by: Aalana If you want to have a direct say in the proposed sov changes this will effect every single 0.0 alliance player to the tune of $14ish/month for a DUST MMO subscription to a ******ng CONSOLE game.
Nope. If you want to have a direct say you spend ISK on grunts that gain and establish planetary sovreignty that allows you to gain solarsystem sov. You spend ISK and supply weaponry, vehicles, assets.
Hiring mercs to take down some POS is the same. Just that you do not have control over it anymore so much because you cannot use your alt's money making merc corp anymore but have to use and trust unknown players in a console game to do the dirty work for you.

That makes sense. Play it backwards and it will be a mirror-image, so this is obviously an anti-NGE. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Also honest opinion:
This is a great step for eve, it adds another layer of depth, and also another option on how we play this alredy complex and very open game.
If you get bored of shooting things with your spaceship, or hauling your wares all over the universe, you can turn off your computer, turn on your PS3/Xbox360 and log in to a Killzone/Resistance/Halo style shooter, with some pre-existing friends from eve, and take over a planet.
This has to be the first of its kind, and it's a welcome addition in my eyes. I think this will play an important part in the future...upon initial release it may be somewhat limited, while the developers get a feel for how the game will pan out, and affect EVE-O's universe. But eventually, it'll be a key element to taking/controlling/holding space, and will be fun too!
The one thing I'm hoping for, is that corporations on this game can't exceed a certain size, as much as I'd love to imagine that it's to be as open as possible, lets pretend 1/5th of Goonswarm play...you've got a 1000 man team, against your...what...200? You'd have to be damn good, and this isn't counter-strike either, consoles are pretty horrible for FPS's and twitch reactions. So you'd be outblobbed totally. I think a 50-200 man limit on corps would be awesome.
We love everyone. |
