One thing I think a lot of people lose sight on is the fact that CCP is breaking some new ground in a sense with having a game with a single 'shard'. Distributed code is difficult to debug , couple a distributed server along with highly distributed clients and you've got a recipe for some very difficult coding. That it works as well as it does IMHO shows that the devs have done one hell of a job.

I do, however, think they need to hire someone who knows something about human-computer interaction (HCI)... many command interfaces just plain suck -- if you've tried to command a lot of drones you know what I mean. :D

First they need to hire someone who knows something about human-human interaction (Customer Support).

Half of the complaints would disappear with a regular comment from an official source. Not anything as unrealistic as an ETA for something. Just an acknowledgement that "Yes, I've seen this and will give it some thought". Occasionally followed by "I gave this some thought and this is what I think...". And definately someone to state quickly what is and is not within the rules of normal gameplay.

Good communication gives your programmers the time they need to get things done. I can't give my boss any firm ETA on when a complicate project will be finished until I near the end of the project. First they need to hire someone who knows something about human-human interaction (Customer Support).

I found this post very interesting. The points brought up are ones that have been voiced since the early days of the Beta. For those of you out there that have played this game since the beginning (Beta Days) you have experienced first hand CCPs commitment to making this game a stellar experience for all. Before you flame me Weaselsmasher, I do know what I am talking about. I hold a Masters Degree from MIT in Database Application Cryptography. CCP has had many issues to deal with from the start and they have done and admirable job in addressing them. However the on-line gaming climate has changed since the Beta. There are more issues (i.e. bugs, exploits and so on and so forth) manifesting themselves at a much faster pace now that the game has been released. As for problems being addressed in a "faster" fashion you have to take into account that CCP has had this game in development for quite some time and they have had players subscribing to it for only a short period of time. So abundant "up-time" staffing at present time may be a cost issue. However I have seen a faster and much more involved approach to CCP's addressing of issues such as stuck characters and lag exploits. You as much as I know that latency is a major hurdle to overcome when dealing with a persistent live application. It is not CCP's fault that your neighbor may have be on a dial up modem verses a broadband connection. Server latency can and is governed by the amount of load and bandwidth that it has available to that server or cluster at a given time. CCP's server clusters have been very reliable since CD Release of the game. Some of the problems experienced since the release have been due to lag or database problems, I will concede that point. However CCP has done their best with the resources available to rectify and solve those problems. CCP is trying to make this game evolve far beyond its current constraints and for that I think they should be applauded. Unfortunately in doing so we as players may have to experience some bumps along the way. In the long run I am sure that we will be thankful for their endeavor to make this game better for allà

I am not questioning CCP's commitment. However, there is a piece of wisdom my manager passed to me a while back that is completely relevant in the business world:

Never confuse effort with results.

There is no question that CCP is working hard. It's whether they are focussing upon the right things, in the right order, with the right tools that I question.

Belive it or not, I'm not an enemy of the game. I'm not trying to trash CCP. What I do want is an explanation as to why certain problems keep cropping up again and again and again. There is a systemic problem here.

I not here to be CCP's friend (or enemy), nor am I here to provide warm fuzzy feelings to other players. If I upset CCP with my questions, really, I don't care. Professionals should know the difference between criticizing the product and criticizing the person... if they don't then they're not professionals and have no place at the table. If I upset some of the players, I care even less, as a player being angry at me doesn't improve the game. It's the game itself that needs to be improved, not the personal feelings of CCP or players whose opinions aren't relevant to how long I remain stuck between systems for hours on end or why known exploiters remain unpunished.

The bottom line is this: the game should be more stable than it is now, customer service should be better than it is now, enforcement of the game's Terms Of Service should be better than it is now, and the reasons why they are not need to be examined. Fearing to ask hard questions isn't going to get anything fixed.

Silence will tell me something about how CCP thinks of and handles these problems. Having this thread locked, as some of you have suggested, will tell me much more. Answers, of course, would be best. But no matter what, I will know more about what's going on and why because I ask uncomfortable questions. Whether that reflects positively or not upon CCP's approach to development and customer service is another matter entirely.

Overall agree, these are good questions. Yes they may be phrased in an argoent manaer, but well the sad truth is. when folks are annoyed or bothers no matter how they try it comes through.

you'll not get answers for these, sadly. no MMO corp has every had the guts to actualy stand up and answer the tough questions.

and ignore the others, you've blimished thier favorit game by implying it has issues. Can't have that, might stain the rose colored glasses.

Release a bug free working MMOG and the world will beat a part to your door. Release a buggy one and somefolks will still beat a path to your door. some to smack you in the head. Others to tell you how good it is.

I believe CCP is a freshman game company. They all come from different walks of life, and yes that includes a heavy (?) background in the telecommunications industry I hear. One of the reasons EVE looks so different is that they have not been spoiled by game industry "have to" statements.

Supporting a MMOG is more than programming and delivering content. Supporting the playerbase is extremely important. That means communicating with them, staying on top of important issues, providing regular updates, and following the policies that they implement.

Some players have been banned for exploits, possibly attacks on the server setup too, but I wouldn't know about that part.

However, I can safely say that there will never, ever be a "Hall of Shame", it's an extremely unprofessional idea, makes CCP appear ogre-like, and leads to a gamut of negative human emotions and reactions, which I don't feel I have to list here.

May I remind you that Asheron's Call has at least three times your playerbase, and about forty times your longevity in retail. The Hall of Shame was put up at the request of the players who were seeking proof that Microsoft was going to enforce their anti-combat-macro policy. Microsoft was having a serious credibility problem with its claims that it was banning cheaters and exploiters (with good reason), and they felt that public shame might be a useful tool.

They have been running an online game for nearly four years with a six-figure user base. Their server population is stable, even after all that time, and is still profitable. The origin company, Turbine Entertainment, has two released MMORPGs (something no other company has ever done), and two of the biggest online licenses in development (Middle Earth Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online).

Maybe, just maybe, they know something you don't know... yet. If you think they have nothing to teach you, that you know everything there is to know about running an online game and dealing with griefers, then you are doomed to repeat their mistakes, and the mistakes of every other MMORPG. Not all online games survive those kinds of mistakes.

The lesson to be learned here is this: in order for the threat of banning to be taken seriously, it has to be credible. Some online games have a reputation for harboring griefers. Believe me, if CCP doesn't develop a reputation for being an "ogre" when it comes to handling cheaters and griefers, those cheaters and griefers are going to eat you up and spit you out. They're good at it. They've been cheating longer than you've been enforcing. They know exactly how to test the boundaries... how to figure out which GMs are weak... how to play the "letter of the rules" game... how to play off one portion of Customer Service against another... how to play off the development company against the distributor. Unless they fear punishment, they'll do it, to.

To fear punishment, they have to believe it CAN happen to them. It's really just that simple. You might not like to hear that, and you might not like the "Hall of Shame" idea, but that doesn't make you right and them wrong.

Be careful about that word "never". It doesn't taste good when it has to be eaten.

No but I have played MMORPGs where the companies behind were afraid to take firm stances on problematic issues. A game company refusing to deal overtly with cheating and exploiting is a game company that does not know what is best for it. The gamut of negative feelings will run all the better because people feel that they are only viewed as cattle to milk for money. Since the company obviously cannot show some spine when problems arise that cannot easily be stuffed into a EULA.

Pub owners have used bouncers for years. Instead of fearing to lose the sale to a few drunken trouble makers, they protect the regulars by making sure trouble makers dont get back in.

And in an overtly way, in the door.

Microsofts idea with a HoS is fine because they were not trusted. CCP will not have to make any HoS if they actively pursuit and prune out rotten apples early and often.

Since the company obviously cannot show some spine when problems arise that cannot easily be stuffed into a EULA.

Pub owners have used bouncers for years. Instead of fearing to lose the sale to a few drunken trouble makers, they protect the regulars by making sure trouble makers dont get back in.

And in an overtly way, in the door.

Microsofts idea with a HoS is fine because they were not trusted. CCP will not have to make any HoS if they actively pursuit and prune out rotten apples early and often.

We all see tons of cheaters, when are we going see proof that they are getting nailed.

I would love to trust that the right thing is being done but proving it would be even better.

Many good questions Weaselsmasher,

Let me see if I can answer some of your questions that are directed to Customer Support:

1. Everyone at CCP and Customer Support has a separate player account they can use to play the game as a regular player. There is no cheating or using GM powers allowed, everyone starts from scratch and experiences the game a normal player.

4. Every GM goes through a training program and there a clear policies and rules that they need to follow. Many of the GM's have been here since 2002 so they are well trained and with good experience.

5. We answer all stuck petitions 24/7. We do understand that being stuck is a critical issue and give them the highest priority

6. I think hellmar has explained this on the board or in his dev blog, but there is a continuous effort from the dev team solving stuck related problems. The main thing to understand is that stuck problem is not one problem but can be caused by so many different factors. We have in each patch been addressing a particular stuck problem but there are new stuck problems arising that we are trying to detect and fix in the next patch.

8. We have banned players for hacking and cheating. The EULA is clear about what rules players need to follow. Hall of shame is something that we will consider, but I can't promise anything. Anyway should it not be Space of shame? :)
