Well i thought i would add my two cents to this thread, just for fun...
The problem is that most people differenciate between items/goods and credits and see them as two separate things. In accounting, if you have 10 computers that are worth 100$ each, when you do an inventory you would add 1000$ to your assets column and put computer capital as a sidenote.
In eve, since there are minerals that are freely exchanged for credits with npcs, you could say that mineal X that sells for 10isk at npcs is practically gold in itself, since you can easily sell it. I mine ore X, refine it, and sell it, and so ive just created gold. Now this is what the original post said, and i agree with him, but not entirely.
I find that people accumulate items in mmorpg's (in life too), so its only natural that the money in a market also increases so that the goods/money ratio is relatively unchanged. If the ratio increases, you have deflation, and if it decreases, you have inflation (in theory). With this said, id like to point out that you can create gold through player transactions. If goods can be rfeely excahnged for money, then in my definition the good is actually like money. So if i take ore X, and as a friend to refine it, and then sell mineral X to an npc - and then sell the mineral X to an npc, i would have in fact created isk through the transaction. Of course im assuming that the total quantity of mineral X sold gives a higher return than the quantity of ore X if sold to an npc, but thats usually the case isnt it?
You can push this further - say you take raw materials worth 1mil isk and you make a ship that sells for 5mil isk to other players. A player buys it, and insures it, then destroys it. If insured amount-fee paid is more than 1mil, youda just created credits too.
Its just a matter of blurring the line between goods and credits. Lines, which in the real world or in EVE are quite blurry in the first place. If i have a cloaking device which i can sell for 30mil isk, isnt keeping the cloaking device like keeping 30mil isk?
Well that all, im a new player to eve (1month) so if i got things wrong please dont bash me too hard :\
