Anyone got any good memories from days past?
I remember upgrading my GFX card and enabling 'sun is occluded by ships' feature and going 'WOW damn this looks good', as well as viewing the eye-candy battlestation in Vehan for the first time.
NPC courisers behaving like complete raytards , visiting new eden, the obelisk and so on.
(note: if you haven't already, feel free to save your history screenshots on eve-files )

I remember the last day of my trial period, when I was unsure if I wanted to continue the game or not.
I decided to go ahead and sell all the loot I had collected from rattin, back before I knew what implants and factions spawns were.
I sold a 3mil and 18mil implant and had over 20mil isk with nothing to realistically spend it on, yet.
I had been draggin those around Empire in my cargo hold for about 10 days, not knowing what they were at the time.

The friend who introduced me to eve very kindly gave me 5 million isk so that I could go do some things and not worry about money for a little while.

Probably the first time I ran out into low/nullsec....without scouting. Everyone told me it was dumb but I did it anyway. Was quickly chased down and destroyed.
Shield tanking my Tristan, becuz, better shields is better, amirite?
Probably my fondest memory is mining in an Iteron IV, with one T2 mining laser. I thought I had the afk mining world by the nuts. This was back when a properly fit Hulk would run you 600m or better. Way out of my league at the time. There was a collective facepalm in my corp when I told them I was doing it. I'd been with the corp a couple weeks, tops...my 'sponsor' told me to log out and not log back in for a couple days, haha |

Remember when Trinity came along, but I couldn't use shiny new graphics since I thought my video card (GeForce 6600) couldn't handle it. I was very sad but then updated the drivers and everything worked.
I also remember the first time I saw a Caracal, and thought it was so freaking cool! This was pre-trinity and I still think it's cooler with old graphics. Too bad it's not such an awesome ship. Then when I finally got one for myself (thanks to a donation after complaining I had no cash in the Swedish chat channel), I fitted it with a cargo scanner and heavy missile launchers with one ammo type in every launcher. It also had a small shield booster and I was grinding Lvl 1's like a maniac.
First time I flew a Raven and thought I could fit it like a passive drake, with SPR's in the low, shield rechargers in the meds (a single invuln field, lol), and two Field Purger rigs.
Ah, those were the days

I remember joining in '06 when level 4's used to be as hard as level 5's are now and it took a fleet of corpmates in battleships to do Guristas Extravaganza.
I remember mining for 3 months in a Bantam because everyone told me to train up attribute skills first. 50 million skillpoints later, I'm glad I did.
I also remember buying a Hulk for 300 million isk in '07 and that was half the price they were in '06! Then 3 months later they were going for 100 mill. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

Which makes me wonder, do you think you would still be playing if you hadn't went that path and maybe like trained for something else?
I ask because the simple reason of the way we "level up" in EVE compared to other games.

Yup i remember the 'old days'.Have a load of good memories regarding first experiences in 0.0 specifically pure blind. This game changed a LOT since the start and i can't allways say for the better and especially regarding 0.0.
But then i am going to the age where you claim everything used to be better .
regarding empire well mining in my apoc is something not done these days but used to be THE uberminer.Worked about 3 months to get my raven together , wich i btw lost within 10 hours after in my first 0.0 jump-in. At times when i hear new players moan about how slow they are mining in their mining barges or their low sp causes them to not be able todo anything usefull ingame while we started a LOT lower i just wish they could get it the way it was presented to us.

When u initiated warp you were safe. Even if it took you 20 mins to align and warp you were unlockable. Apart from to NPCs,which was bad in belts, especially as there was no "stop warp" button. :)
Splash damage on torpedos. Killing a target then the splash damage destroying the pod. Lost a lot of Sec status that day. Torps launched from a cruiser :)
ECM was 100% effective and added up So a Blackbird with 1 of each racial and a multispec (6+2+2+2+4) could jam anything 100% of the time assuming no ECCM was used
Being chased through syndicate region in my inty by an inty, so i docked, changed ECM to counter, waitied for him to agress then just jammed and picked him apart. :)

I agree. The early days of Eve with 0 knowledge of the game was the best time Ive ever had in a computer game. I got sooo hooked it wasnt even funny... I ran back and forth between a asteroid and a station in a ibis and watched my isk grow for the first 2 hours while checking out the market and every other function.
I even had a hauler sit at nights in a ore field mining and filling up with ore. Every morning I would make tons of isk by selling it. Really fun times back then when you could get rich quickly. I also got into trading and made more than a billion in just a few months of trading after downtime.
These days I feel there is too much effort for too little gain, but maybe thats because I got used to having it too easy.

Definitely. With soooooooo many things to learn it was effectively like plaving a brand new game every few days as you unlocked even moar stuff to fit and fly or new careers to pursue. Hell the complexity of it all convinced me to get a second account within a month of starting eve just to keep up with all the content.

Flying around on day one in my ibis of ultimate doom, checking out low sec cause hey it's supposed to be dangerous. Getting a convo from a "friendly" local. "Hey get the stuff from that can, you can have it", "Goly Gee thanks!" I replied, wetting my pod for some fancy loot no doubt. I discovered what an omen was right after that, and then discovered you get magically transported to a station when you die.

Allways wish i kept the screens when iv'e seen this question come up in the past. After the castor patch, circa christmas 2003, ccp started droping weird and wonderfull bits at sites just off asteroid belts in low sec. Remember one that i realy wish i could reference, 'an old weather vein'
From the picture of it i still have in my mind, it was quite highly detailed... maybe ccp have some shots, or another user, be good to see it again. ______

First time I went into lowsec, about 2-3 weeks into the game.
A friend and I sold everything we had and bought Caracals for hunting, though I wasn't really sure what I was hunting at the time. Friend fit a warp disruptor, "just in case they try to get away." First lowsec belt we warped into, a red flashy rapier decloaked (Chuskarl's Grandfather) and started shooting at us. After finishing him off, we saw a COVERT OPS CLOAKING DEVICE II in the can... I nearly fainted, we had enough isk to last us FOREVER.

♥ Oh god! That old UI... Having to switch between High, Mid and Low... ♥ Mining in Luminaire in an SWA Frigate gang. Trusting the designated hauler not to nick everything (and them not doing so) and being delighted at 700k at the end of it! ♥ Not realising you had to activate Shield Boosters ♥ Fitting Shield Boosters to my first Thorax, coz the newbie tutorial told you to buy one... ♥ Losing my first Thorax to 0.4 Cruiser NPCs (probably coz it was Shield Boosted ) ♥ Dual / Triple MWD ships! ♥ The first guy to take me down to 0.1 to a hidden NPC spawn at a moon ♥ My first taste of PVP at that same spot, in my first - terribly fit, NPC - Megathron... And winning against 3 hostiles! ♥ Running in to the first guy who ever killed me, and podding him!
So many memories...

The good old days...
- Buying goods without realizing where the stuff was located and then blindly heading into low sec to get them.
- Running missions and getting ammunition, goods, skill books, or the occasional ship as bonuses! I learned more about various skills in this fashion than having to use third party resources to be informed. And I gained more in deadly ammo that I am still slowly living off some of it today.
- Receiving the rare in-game mail from an agent that since I have been a grand asset to their corporation, they will offer, for a limited time, an uncommon skill book much cheaper than the current market prices.
- Being witness to the (infamous?) statement by a new pilot, "There was a bright flash and my ship turned into an egg - did I level up?"
- Rigs, salvage, and wrecks did not exist. If there was phat lewt when something exploded, then it dropped in a can.
- Privateers making Jita interesting with the constant battles in the surrounding systems. I made some good money back then selling off ammunition and combat related gear from missions.
- Listening and talking with Oveur when he appeared one day in the State War Academy chat channel.
- Hearing the tales of individuals like Chribba and Sir Molle and thinking to myself that they must be beyond elite if they're well-known on a single server cluster unlike guilds on various servers in my old EverQuest days.
- People making an attempt to help those in need without today's malcontents waving e-peens, smack talking, and constant stream of spammers selling illegal stuff.
Thanks for reading.

Then after getting my Maller doing level 2 missions for months just hoping to get the agent offer for one of the social skillbooks I could sell for like 60 million back then. Got the book, bought an Apoc and started doing level 3.
Tired of missioning joined a corp and tried to fly my Apoc to 0.0 space so I could rat. It got destroyed at a gate camp that wasn't there 5 minutes earlier when my friend flew threw it. Grrrrrrrrr.

i remember the time i got on right around DT to fly to H8 in 0.0 to pick up a ship i bought on the old contract system.... Man i remember still twitchin at work later, from the experience..... It was my first Thorax cruiser, i waited 3-4 days to go get it, mid week flew down before, returned after....
i remember mining in Neziel in a Megathron, when 2 cruisers showed up, most of my party ran, but i seen that their missiles couldnt hit me because of the roids, so i stayed and fought, sent one fleeing, other one into armor before i freaked out and ran....lol
yea everyone argued with me about maxing all my learning skills first.... 81 mill SPs now, it was worth it..
i remember a friend wanting to test some new cruise missile setup, and i volunteered, needed an armor tank test anyways... lost my ship from lag....lol
most of all i remember and have enjoyed making all these friends where ever i have gone, be it high sec or 0.0 in the 5 years i have been playing -----------------------------------------------

I remember M0o camping the system right next to the newbie systems. People flied in there in their little ibises... pop.
But I really liked it myself. Danger was close. PvP against -10's was next door if you wanted it. Small groups tried to fight them off and sometimes succeeded. It was a different game. Better in some ways, worse in others. A lot better if you only wanted to play for an hour and fight pirates.

Back before can baiting in starter system was declared as harrasement, how the front of starter stations were masses of cans for unassuming rookies.
I, having actually run the tutorial, understood what they were trying to do, and had great fun looting cans in my Velator before rapidly running away. Then one day a Megathron who had been dropping single rounds of Antimatter L accidentally ejected an Adaptive Nano Plating II, and I, having no clue what it was worth (this was during Red Moon Rising, when T2 was still done by lottery and stupidly expensive by today's standards), picked it up and ran.
The Mega pilot smacktalked me in local for the entire 15 minutes before my aggro ran out. ----------------------------------------------

Ahah, do I! I remember spraying my neighbors over the fence with the hose as they tried to lay out and get tans. That was a good one they ran every direction... oh, eve memories; right, you should have said so.
Let's see... there was the time I was podded while my daughter was throwing and I had to go help her. There was the time my alliance was accused of being bob by paranoid neighbors as an excuse for attacking and taking our freshly built outpost. Good times...
I also remember the Amarr stations looking like some kind of non-planar Christmas tree nightmare winking on and off and generally spasming when you approached.
Hooray for cleaned up models and graphics!

I got a worlds collide level 1 in lowsec, jumped in with my caracel and cleared the first room, found out the gates were locked to cruisers and up, went back to highsec got my kestrel went back and completed the mission, thinking that it was rather easy why did everyone say it was a hard mission. blissfully unaware of how lucky i got that there was no one to kill my caracel that first time I went in. I don't know if that was on my first or 2nd character. right around xmas/new years 06/07
reading about that one super big corp theft and podding bit that got a big article in one of the gaming magazines and thinking no way am I going to play a game where I can get killed and lose days of training, although I didn't understand the eve concept of skill training, I was playing a game where a death could wipe out a few hours of xp training, and basic skill training took a few hours but couldn't be wiped out. then talking to a friend who played a few years later and realizing I just had to keep a clone updated. that and just the vast corporation/alliance structures and a bit about the ship loss system and just being hooked on the idea of the game from there.
warping into the aftermath of a suicide gank... wtf why is there this much concord here

I ask because the simple reason of the way we "level up" in EVE compared to other games.
I would've kept playing if I'd trained up for other stuff first.. and I would've been more reckless with it too. Edited by: Typhado3 on 08/09/2009 09:15:18 aaahh there was the time when ccp opened up the drone regions. I was in frege back then and remember us taking space having to fly load after load of minerals and crap just to build a station. Freighters couldn't unload at stations so this was the only way you could get minerals out there, aside from carrier jumping which doesn't go well when u need that much tritanium.
The time when I undocked in a caracal next to 3 privateer intys and they all ran then warped to a different station with a privateer in a munnin outside who docked up all the while I had my cargo hold full to the max with zydrine I'd gotten from the drone regions
Oh yeah and the massive battle we once had whent on for literally hours. 30 support + 4 carriers vs 50 support (us) they managed to kill most of our support while we killed all of theirs but couldn't kill the carriers till our massive battleship reinforcement gang arrived. Took soooo fricken long to take down their spider tank. Through the whole thing I managed to survive in a little basilisk saving god knows how many of our ships in that battle and being nearly killed by a carrier twice.... long time ago before logistics where massively buffed and where pretty uncommon in battle. ------------------------------

- Flying through 0.0 with a friend in shuttles, and laughing at the intensely paranoid locals.
- While messing around with probing me and said friend somehow ended up inside a sun, leading to a graphics bug that made everything multicoloured and psychedelic. - Being chased around N0L in an omen by 13 BoB pilots during the ASCN invasion.
- While on a trial account I killed a rat in 0.6 space. It dropped an implant which sold for 120 mill.
- Watching my Geddon pull 360s midwarp and arriving at random angles.
- The joys of empire warsdecs.

I remember the first time I was canflipped. It was a guy in a Punisher that did it. I had my alt in his brand new (uninsured since I did not have the money to do it) Caracal sitting right next to the can. I took a peek at the pesky little ship. HA! He is much smaller than me. My heart was pumping rapidly. I targeted him and opened up. *WHAMMO* He instantly webbed and scrammed me. Then the battle started. I got the shield off him real fast, but I could not break his tank. My cap went down and down. Since I thought you would die with your ship I then ejected and warped away... I actually think that would be more fun, to have a nice big eject button pop up when you get into the lower portions of hull and an alarm braying "EJECT! EJECT! EJECT!" If you dont then your pod goes poof with the ship.
I then convoed him and thanked him for a fun fight. As with most people in eve if you are nice to them they are nice to you he actually helped me fit my first PvP Merlin. Two days later I was canflipped by a Itty III. I went back to station and got my Merlin and went back. He came back once more and yet again I opened up on him. He actually had a gun on the itty but he never hit me once. My loss... about 1m... his loss... about 10M... for some reason he came back in a Myrm to bash my Merlin so I suddenly remembered a pressing engagement I had in the nearby station :D I was high on adrenaline the rest of the evening :p
---
Me and a friend had just gotten our Cruiser skills and we had just gotten the medium gun skill (dont remember which type of gun since it was a now dead character). We got a L1 mission. I carried one missile launcher and the rest was medium guns. My friend had nothing but medium guns. The mission was against drones I believe, they were circling us real fast and the only thing hitting was that missile launcher. When my friend decided to withdraw he was to far gone so his ship got blown up before he could warp off :D
---
Starting out with about 100k skillpoints... only one of the choices gave you like twice that since you got gunnery 5 for free. |

i seem to remember a few months in, joining a 0.0 corp..
zipping around, I found a domination rat on a gate - so i said on ts 'oh hey guys. What does it mean when its called domination xyz?' ... They were all 'wtf bro, where' 'on the gate here...'
One of my corpmates came by with a raven and blew it up for me (silly noob i was flying aruond in my arbitrator >.> ). I promptly looked through the can it left behind.. Finding nothing but some silly shield mods. I took em back to station and threw them in the corp hangar, having no personal use for them
Later that day, someone on ts was like 'WTF who put this domination XL shield booster in the corp hangar?!' Naturally, i didnt realize it was me..
Yep good memories. Once i figured out what domination mods actually meant.. needless to say, im probably not going to forget that for another while to come.

I sorta miss the hilarity of unbalanced ships back in the day...specifically the Gankgeddon and Cav Raven.
Also miss the old system that was not GtG travel. When you entered a system, it randomly placed you somewhere in it (usually around a planet)...but people complained since it was breaking up their fleets.
Miss the old way ECM worked.
Finally made it to the Eve System, and found a bunch of trash...that was sort of fitting.

I remember buying about 200-300 +5% Agility implants before the nano-era for about 5k each...
I used to used them on evey clone and hand them out to all my corps pilots when I had a corp!
Little did I know they'd become worth hundreds of mil each, and I had none left by the time the nano-age hit.
Regarding pretty stuff though, I remember the first time I saw a POS... I was blown away how pretty it looked, and the potential for creating massive 'starbase' structures...
Still not seen a wormhole but hoping for the same inspiration! :)

I remember the ship to beat was the Armageddon with x7 250 protos and full mag stabs.
I remember being able to activate MWD comming out of warp to stay at max speed to try run the m0o gate camp, even then it was a struggle in anything cruiser size above.

Believe it or not This character was 200 million ISK rich by the time I came out of trial.
How? Simply enough I was very bored back then so I went lowsec roaming and I happened to come across a two faction battlecruiser spawn at belt. *This was done in a merlin yes a noob merlin* I grab the nearest wreck while the npc shoot me and I warp then dock before the npc got into the structure. I didn't realize I was a damn rich noob until I dock with my "loot".
Now being a noob and don't need so much ISK I decide to undersold my dread guristas invulnerability field module for 2/3 of the full price. The price back then were 315 million ISK on contract. For those wondering no my account wasn't sold. No third party assist either. The original reason for entering lowsec were believe it or not courier mission in lonetrek. This was back then in 2007 Sept. Whoever lost a dread guristas invulnerability field module back then BIG hug to ya!!!
What I did with the 200 million ISK? Of course brought implants and trained all advance up to learning level 5 + basic 4 + 3 advance and +3 implant sets. So you can say my SP is based on stolen ISK mwhahah.
Super Speed SP Training level 5 FTW! |

2) Joining FIX in 2005, camping the HED pipe, then getting into a war which lasted about a year.
3) Being unemployed and playing EVE for literally 17 hours per day.
4) Bumping into a group of Serpentis freighters in Syndicate, who offered us 4bil each to escort them to empire. Then a Concord fleet turned up, and threatened to kill anyone aiding the Serpentis. I promptly told the Concord commander in local that it was the NORAD (IIRC) fleet, who had just turned up, who were helping them. Concord then engaged the NORAD fleet and killed most of them.
5) Entering the alliance PVP tournament, and my team-mates not turning up, and me entering the arena on my own.
6) Joining Mercenary Coalition
7) Pre-nerf EOS (solo pwn mobile with heavy drones)
8) Pre-nerf Myrmidon (cheap solo pwn mobile with heavy drones)
9) Old-skool Nos domi with ECM

I remember going out on an expedition to find Kernite roids out in Amarr space or somewhere back in late '06. Aven back then, most belts already had the good stuff mined out. Also ninjamining jaspet in a 0.4 with a group of corp mates in covetors and warping to the highsec gate at the first sign of anyone else in local.
Now you can easily get Crokite, Arkonor, all the high end stuff if you set up a pos in w-space. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

I remeber the days past of the old blue scanner graphics in the bottom right corner of the screen. It showed where all obejects were in space and their hieghts from your point.
I also remeber mining safely in 0.2 systems solo. And when a Rifter was one of the most feared frigates in the game.

My personal favorite was the snow ball launcher the first go around, and watching snowballs chase first a small drone, then chase an interceptor. Great fun. Hearing the stories of a corp mate getting folks CONCORDed by firing the snowball launcher at them and watching them retaliate was fun, too. I have a stack of 400 in Jita.
Memories. In 2003 riding a bus home wishing I had a credit card so I could subscribe to that cool new MMO, Eve Online. You could conquer planets, create democracies or communes, tax citizens...
On second thought maybe it's a good thing I didn't start playing until 2006.
Oh, and of course, getting killed in Auner (.4) in my Rifter by a big bad Rupture. Getting ransomed for 1m isk in my pod and laughing in their face, as if my pod were worth that much (as if I HAD that much). I had never heard of implants. -----

Edited by: Jaxxon Voers on 12/09/2009 08:04:07 Training up to fly 10 drones with my Vexor. Drone swarm FTW.
Logging in to find a bone splinter in my hanger, and selling it for enough ISK to buy said Vexor.
Getting killed by some dude named Ginger.
Being able to stop in midwarp and warp at angles.
Buying sets of instawarps.
Stacked MWD's and frigate drag races.
Ninja mining in lowsec for hemo, one Tristan cargo hold at a time.
Seeing a Jove battleship with an entire system shooting at it. And t0mb loling.
Flying to see the Eve Gate.
Raging at the world when my 10 drone Vexor got nerfed.
200km tall Carebear made from anchored cans.
6 minute scan times.
Raging at CCP over the years, while still loving them. And hating them. And then loving again.
