Something like the Asus V9520/TD (with GeForce FX 5200 chipset using 128bit memory bus) would be better than your current one (though still considered "low end").
The next better cards (with GeForce FX 5600) are Ç90.00 and up.
It's hard to find cheap graphics card that are actually suited for gaming. -----

Without being 100% sure i would say the ATI 9200, i have a ATI 9000 mobility in my laptop and it runs great. But i havent tryed a FX5200 so can't say for sure that the ATI is faster, try and look for some benchmarks on the cards, maybe you can find something usefull on google

I did loads of research on the web and found a fantastic deal on a GF FX5700LE 128MB. SO that is now ordered, I also got 1GB of RAM, so in a couple of days when it is delivered. I should have a kick a$$ system. I have checked the compatability etc to EVE spec and it appeares good.
Thanks for all you advice and look forward to seeing you in better quality soon.

Edited by: Quanteeri on 23/10/2004 12:57:11 I ran the game on a 5200 when I first started playing, it did ok, but I upgraded to a 5700Ultra, which should be coming down in price. I got mine about 2 months ago off NewEgg for about 150US. Great VidCard!
For an objective comparison, go to http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html.
Read around that site's graphics sections, there are many articles to help in your decision.

i believe that eve is coded with ATI cards in mind and support for nvidia cards is added later. so you're probably better to go with ATI, but... why go as low as 9200? you'd be better off to save up for another month or two and get something above the 9600 (even 9800). and get the full quality card. light editions are a waste of your money. you'll see only marginal improvements if you go with a 9200 128mb card, but you'll see dramatic imrpovements with a 9600 128mb.
i'd also consider updating your ram to 512mb. with only 256mb of ram you're bottlenecking your processor, so updating your video card won't make much difference no matter how high end you go.

The FX5200 Series is not suitable for 3D applictions. A GeForce Ti4200 is in the same price range and 8 times as powerful.

I just bought an NVidia 5700 LE 256mb Video Card from newegg.com for about $100.
It's not the newest card out there, but it is pretty damn cheap for what you are getting performance wise.

Edited by: Carinae on 28/10/2004 12:56:34 At last, I have the RAM upgraded to one gig and an FX 5700LE 128Ram, the picture is sharper, colours are better defined FPS has shot up, even with fights involving 7 or more ships and drones. also there is hardly any lag after jumps.
Still have to have the sound turned off though due to sound card issues. That is my next task
I wonder if I have the almost perfect system? Lucky bugger if I have eh!

A warning about NVidia. Eve's video code seems to be talking to the GPU in weird and wonderful ways. As the NVidia drivers have progressed this has caused more and more problems. My advice would be that you go with the drivers that come with XP. I took delivery of a new laptop yesterday and after updating everything I can say there are no graphical glitches.
I wouldn't recommend you install the very latest NVidia drivers just yet. Let's see how Shiva works with those. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Andrue, thanks for the info. The driver from XP was automatically detected for my card and installed before I could install the 'older' driver that came on the CD. I was considering seeing if thre was a better driver from the supplier but as it is working so well, why fix what aint broke.
