You pick up a courier contract for 12.6 mill collateral and a 1 mill reward.
Will en route you take a peek inside and find a ship worth 70 mill on the market.
Do you complete delivery or steal the stuff?

Unless you have some reason to be nice to the contract creator i.e. he's a current corpmate or a RL friend then keep it and forfeit the contract.
Eve is a harsh place and thus you can find youself on opposite sides of a war with yesterdays friends so even these reasons may not be enough. . |

if you look over here, below your avatar <---- It tells everyone who is speaking, by conveniently placing the posters name next to the post. Much like your own favorite AOL chat room for example, it announces who is speaking, an internet forum is no different. (minus the obvious lack of 'ASL?' before speaking.)

This.... you can look without breaking it open and still complete it.
Maybe they should think about changing that???

oh, ffs, it ain't even stealing.
The true Eve player would get in touch with the former owner of the ship and offer to deliver it for a reasonable fee. Then take that fee too.

This. There is no penalty for looking inside a courier package.
Also one of the options will give you just the ship ('break' iirc). The other will give you the ship & plastic wrap ('repackage' I think). Granted the plastic wrap isn't all that usefull for anything, but it is nice to have around.

Let's see... 70 mil item... ~13mil collat... 1 mill reward.
The right thing to do is to just complete the contract. Not that you didn't already know that...
Yet, I don't think the guy that made the contract has any understanding of paying labor commensurate to the work, how to prevent theft, or that ethics don't last more than 15 seconds in an unmoderated, unregulated capitalism simulator. I think that makes a failed delivery fall under "should have seen it coming."

Well, I'm learning a lot about myself by playing this game as well.
I completed the contract and told the guy what he did.
I think the moral dilemma I had was that I know I'm playing other REAL people...not the computer. (I know, it's pathetic 'cause it's just a game.) I don't like exploiting people's ignorance....unless they are an enemy.
So my decisions seem to be based on that.
I do keep a ****-list of everyone that ever podded me though....and I'll be coming for you SOON.

EVE is all about scamming, ganking, griefing, stealing. That's how it was designed. Do not try and make it something it wasn't meant to be.

Take it. Bit of a no brainer for me. Your 'good deed' and 'honour' will just go unnoticed and the person making the contract would just think, 'Hah! What a sucker.'

I'd info the person and check out his other contracts, employment history, etc. I would convo him and talk a bit. If he didnt look like an obvious tard then most likely I would tell him what I could do, why the contract was stupid and where his mistake was. I would complete the courier properly most likely, particularly as it all involves a mediocre amount of isk.

Just because it's allowed doesn't mean it's 'all about it'. You have the option, but it's your choice.
We're also able to kill people and take their stuff in real life, but that doesn't make it a good decision.

In this thread, steal:deliver ratio is 12:3
Amazing how the vast majority finds stealing gratifying. Eve is a game and thus role-players are justified in getting their kicks any way that is permissible in-game. Though I find the contemptuous attitude of the majority at the values of the minority quite sickening.
