I doubt it - there just isn't time to type instructions in combat generally.

If you've been in a fleet encounter once with voice come, you would understand the advantage. Not having to type to relay orders and not having to read chat to receive orders is a HUGE benefit.

Your hands can only do one thing at a time.
Your eyes can only be on one thing on your screen at once.
If you require that my hands be typing and my eyes be passing over mostly useless chatter, I will react more slowly to events, and sometimes miss those events altogether.
All other things being equal, a fleet with voice comms will prevail over a fleet communicating by text chat. ---- Suddenly Ninjas Blog: My Loot, Your Tears

For PVP voice comms are essential. Combat moves fast, faster than you realize. Text just doesn't cut it. It takes too long to type and takes too long to read. If anyone tells you you must be on voice for PVE or other carebear activities you are free to laugh at them.

Clearly the only reason you wouldn't want to use voice comms is if you are a guy that is pretending to be a girl. Stop pretending to be something better than you really are and get back to failing at PvP.

Or he might have a serious speech impediment. I would hesitate to jump on voice coms as well if I had one. Though being able to listen in is more then enough for most if you are not a fleet commander :)
Then there is the option of having a very cross GF sitting in the same room being already annoyed that you are playing a game rather than playing with her in the first place :o

Yet people won't read what has been typed so eloquently when frantically trying to make sense of their overview when an enemy blob just collided with their own. You do need someone to shout "PRIMARY IS LUBOMIR PENEV, BATTLE BESTOWER!"
Your statement does ring true for casual communication though.

Inability to speak isn't too much of an issue, I've had several corpmates in the past who claimed to be unable to speak. Imo just before and during an actual fight the only people that should actually talk are the FC, scouts and, depending on the situation, EW support. --------------------------------------------------- Recruitment thread |

not to mention the screen real estate that the chat window takes up can be annoying, especially when searching for targets

Voice comms is obviously a really good fleet command and control tool.
But outside of that, it serves as a place where people can bond as people, rather than as just text on a screen. You get to know people a lot better just by shooting the breeze with them, and you learn to trust your corpies. When your FC is someone you've been talking to about his promiscuous sister for the past hour, and generally getting along with for a few days/weeks, you're much happier to fit neuts/remote reps/24km points/whatever, rather than just doing it because you were told to.

Exactly this, you could even has a set of "codewords" for certain commands to speed things up you might only need to type 1 or 2 words every now and again.
Voice comms is totally not necessary even in high end to be good, I have played other mmos with and without voice comms and really it is more down to the players skill and awareness.
You could even just relay commands as acronyms like ff bs (focus fire battleship) and such, but yeah people usually say some annoying **** on voice comms (there will always be one or two) which sucks a bit of the fun out.

^^ This tbh.
A good FC and people who understand comms etiquette ie "apoc is jammed" or "Domi is primary" and not "OMFG LOOK AT ALL THE BRIGHT LIGHTS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH - IT LOOKS LIKE VEGAS OR SOMETHING WHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEE" makes all the difference.
Having said that, my gf gets seriously raging that I can get so involved online and laugh my ass with near complete strangers off but only speak to her when I need something cooked or some sex.

Well, I usually want people to listen, even if they dont speak...they can type in chat, but intel etc and commands are easier given over voice.

The obsession is this:- group PVP = communication. No comunication = dead ships.
Please, dont listen to a single person who says that its ok for them to PVP without voice comms, they are obviously re tarded

Well you can take the advice of Xandr0s here with his epic PVP experience of: Lifetime kills 0 Lifetime losses 1
Or you can take it from people with thousands of PVP kills in both fleet and small gang combat.
Voice comms are essential for success at PVP for any length of time. Sure you can 'get away' with text comms sometimes but by and large if you get in anything more than a 1 or 2 ship engagement you are going to need to use voice comms to coordinate your fleet.

Having voice comms can indeed add alot of entertainment to the game, in small frequent gangs you can get a real camaraderie going.

No. I guess you've never fought against gangs, you try pulling some WOW jargon; FF BS when you've got 5 enemy BS on field (which is why generally you target names rather than ship types) and you'll find yourself wasting time deciding which BS specifically.
Besides it's all too easy to miss a line when engaged in heated combat. Performing more complicated tactics in combat that's constantly changing isn't that easy via text.
Also EVE is not other mmo's, there's actually alot of place for creativity in combat.
