you CAN pvp without voice comms, however this usually requires a small group of people who have been pvping together for ages and know what they are doing before being told.
It is however imo not the best way at all to engage in medium to large gang pvp without the use of some form of voice over net. PVP can be confusing enough at times without making it harder through no voice comms and someone consicely pointing out targets.
If your corp suffers from mouth breathers and morons who talk over FCs on comms then thats your issue tbh -------------------------

To add a serious followup to this topic, there are some ways, depending on if people in your corp are willing to do it, to allow people to participate without having voice comms. Deaf players (and yes, there are some) who want to PVP are in a particularly bad way for this kind of thing.
The best solution is to require that during PVP operations only the scout and the FC are talking. Everyone else uses fleet chat. Someone who is not the scout/FC/tackle and who can type quickly is designated the "repeater", summating the FC's commands in fleetchat so people can read what was said, and provides a backup for those cases when Vent is garbled, etc.

Hum, once lost a fleet BS I was moving one single jump to a small roaming gang that was signaled on voice during the one minute window I needed to check how the dinner was going in the oven. If someone had written it at least I could scroll back...
Frankly fleet combat is mostly primary calling which can be done by text (and should often, I was in mixed KIA/TCF fleet where half the KIA members would not understand who the French FC called before some kind soul typed it), calls for RR are already handled by broadcasting. That covers 95% of what grunts have to do.
I've been in both all text and all voices corps, and I'm not convinced either is better. (The best experience by far was a texting fleet with enemy vent streamed on ours, "**** I'm dying" was never so sweet to hear) -- 081014 : emoragequit, char transfered to a friend, 090317 : back to original owner blog |

I understand that people can't be on Vent, Teamspeak all the time going afk etc. I personally would usually type up in corp chat if I saw something that would effect anyone heading that way.
But my point was that it's really helpful and useful to be on there if you're flying about, as I'm not always paying attention to corp chat but I will often hear whatever is said over Voice comms. Being -10 you need to be up to speed on whatÆs going around you or you get to fly about in a nice Alien looking egg all the time.

Fleet combat is a completely different story to gang combat, fleet combat is pretty mindless following orders, whilst gang combat is much more fast paced and fast reactions are a must.

having run roams with both text and voice comms i know which i prefer. Voice Comms make things so much easier when things start getting busy and fast reactions are needed. Now i accept that if your running a big fleet voice comms is somewhat unecessary save for the FC and scouts but for smaller fleets and roaming gangs it is far superior.

Or he might have a serious speech impediment. I would hesitate to jump on voice coms as well if I had one. Though being able to listen in is more then enough for most if you are not a fleet commander :)
Then there is the option of having a very cross GF sitting in the same room being already annoyed that you are playing a game rather than playing with her in the first place :o
OP could also be a deaf/mute where voice comms would be completely useless.... (If someone else mentioned, sorry.) Having a handicap and overcoming it is a great thing, but some things just can't be overcome in life and have to be accepted.
Funny you should mention this second part, Ran. My ex- just got mad when I tried to play with her when she wasn't interested, so I'd go play games. Later, when SHE got interested and I was in the middle of the game, she'd get mad cause I didn't drop everything and come running.... Women... can't live with them, can't shoot them.

Voice comms are hugely advantageous because you don't need to stop what you are doing, you can hear or say what you need while playing the game. Ventrillo is especially nice because it will continue to work if the client locks up or crashes.
This is pretty much a requirement in any MMO. Even in LOTRO, which is widely regarded as casual heaven, voice comms are extremely popular. So, I wouldn't call it an "obsession" or imply that its limited to EVE.

Originally by: Villa Wolfsbane I doubt it - there just isn't time to type instructions in combat generally.

Actually, no they don't.
I am a very fast typist - faster than probably 99% of the people in the English speaking world. I can average 120 WPM when I get going - being a legal secretary previously has helped this, obviously.
The average person types between 30 and 50 WPM if they do it at a professional level (i.e. they're using computers all day at work). Around 40% of normal users seem quite happy to be using the CAPSLOCK key to make capital letters. I see it at work all the time and it drives me up the wall; they'll be typing away and in order to make a capital letter they press capslock, then the letter, then capslock again.
They're idiots.
But that's the average person.
Even then, if you know what you're saying and aren't pausing between words, a normal person talks at around 130-150 words per minute and can read at about 200-300 words per minute. The average person *thinks* at about 450 words per minute but can only digest audibly about 300 words per minute.
Now, yes there are people out there who can copy type faster than they can talk however they are incredibly rare. For most legal and medical secretaries, the entry requirements are about 70 words per minute. The world record is just over 200 words per minute, but that was with a DVORAK keyboard, not a QWERTY layout.
Anyway, fun facts out of the way, there is no way, even if I was typing at 120 WPM, that I'd be able to control a fleet - people's names are too stupid, situations change far too quickly and whilst I'm sitting there typing commands away, I'm being destroyed because I can't type that fast and also maneuver my ship, target stuff, fire, adapt to the situation as it unfolds and also control 20 other people at the same time.
Typing fleet commands is possible, but if you're facing a team that is using voice comms, you will not prevail, assuming all other things are equal. Ralara's banned again so this is my alt :p |

Voice Comms break immersion and I swear to God if one more person spams stupid music, burps, or starts ****ing singing I'll rip my ears off.
But sadly, it's a necessary evil.

thers nothing better than on vent/ts someone says somethign that came out wrong - then vent erupts into laughter and ****taking :P
tbh, my corp only has a mandatory comms thing for Fleets, when there is no fleet if you want on you get on and tbh most of the corp does as we have a bit banter... its what makes the game fun when you have to do menial repetative tasks -----------------------------------------------

voice comms are so essential most pilots use out of game tools like Vent and TS because the ability to communicate, even while not logged on, is critical

The obsession with comms is not having a mic, its being on comms to listen to the FC. Its all well and good having someone relay orders in fleet chat like ALIGN X GATE etc, but when it comes to the fighting, you need to at least be on comms to hear who to shoot at etc. Just download TS/Vent and get in when a fleet is on, no-one is asking you to speak. ---------------------------------
