Just thought some of you might appreciate this... We have a MakerBot over at Hive76, and of course I couldn't resist the urge to print an EVE model. Because this printer can't yet print things with overhangs very well, the Capsule is probably the easiest thing to print. Also, because of it's shape, I had to cut the model in half first. Here's a photo of the rear almost finished
I'll post more photos once I get the other half done, and the two ends joined together.

It'll be about 50mm wide, somewhere around 120'ish mm high I think... I don't remember the dimensions off hand. I changed it around a lot, trying to print it as a whole and at different sizes, but that just wasn't meant to be.

You should try a CAD/CAM milling machine - high-end dental laboratories generally sport one or two. They're specifically designed to handle undercuts and overhangs.

Love this kinda thread.
I mean the model of the pod, not threads about anal toys...
Anal toys are ok. I hear the 'Rude-boy' is pretty good...
Um... Anyway...
I'm very much looking forward to seeing the finished model. Preferably with some larger images!

How long does it take one of those printers to actually print something like that? On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

That half took about 45 minutes, I suspect the other half wont take quite as long, as there's less detail in the front.

Is it a solid object or is it hollow inside? (obivously its two halves but I mean does it waste material when it doesnt need too?)
What sort of program do you need to use to create a printable object? I would imagine that it would have to be a 3-d object to begin with so I would imagine that images and what not (like something you made in photoshop) would be out. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

I'm not 100% sure how the OP did it but here is my guess as I have done some 3D printing as well in the past. The internal is most likely honeycomb patterned to give strength but not waste too much ABS pellets. You don't want it solid as it would waste a horrible amount of ABS pellets and take forever to print.
To actually get things printable you need a 3D object to start with, in this case a pod exported with TriExporter and then converted to a fileformat that the 3D printer can deal with.

There was a thread I believe a couple years ago or so about someone who printed EVE ship models with a Z-Corp 3D-printer. Those can actually do the job, even in color, you only need the exact CAD-data for the ship to feed it to the printer.

Mashie is correct. I used TriExporter to get the model, then opened in Blender, and exported it to STL. From there, I run it though Skeinforge to get the gcode, and then load that into ReplicatorG, which tells the printer that to do.
You can make it as dense, or hollow as you like. Obviously, the more dense it is, the longer it will take to print. This one's mostly hollow, and uses a hex filler pattern. You can change that as well ;)

Wrong. No commercial sense. Tell him it cost quadrillions of dollars, or at least say 129.99 (look what the toys in the EVE-shop cost, as a guideline). He might even pay it ...

That's mostly because GW sues anything fan related. They take their copyright protection a bit too seriously. I can understand it when people try to make money of your IP, that's perfectly normal, but throwing around cease and desist orders to fan-projects (non-profit ones that is) goes a bit to far imho.

Machine is like $900, the materials are cheap. Not very sophisticated models, they come out kinda funky sometimes depending on how the plastic behaves when extruded, but they can make some kewl stuff...

If it's ABS plastic it's working with, I'd recommend you do the following:
1. Explode your model (in this case, the EVE Capsule) into 'easy' shapes. In this case, cut the model in half and those two halves into quarters
2. Remove any excess 'filling' from the model that you can and make the 'inside' surface as simple as possible for the machine
3. When it's finished with the individual pieces, remove them from the baseplate and finish using small files etc; fill gaps using any relevant form of sealant/resin to finish off the surfaces properly
4. Assemble using relevant glue - fill the interior with a reinforcing or weighting material if you feel you want it and/or it's necessarily
5. Get ready to paint it
Technically it should be very much possible for you to 'print' out any ship model in EVE - you just won't be able to do them as single-piece printouts and will have to work on a component basis.
I very much wish I could afford this machine and the materials it uses - I have many ideas for things I'd like to do with it... ---

I take it you're referring to the Damnatus fan film. The case in that one is actually quite solid from a legal perspective, if true. Apparentely, Germany's copyright laws work in such a fashion that the rights to GW's copyrighted properties used in the film would have transferred over to the makers of the film had it been publicly released. That's like opening Pandora's Can o'Worms.
Still, it was a crappy thing for GW to do, especially since they were contacted by the Damnatus crew at the start of production, and didn't see a reason to reply (with a Cease & Desist) until a couple of months before release. Years of work down the drain because a company is run by a bunch of greedy jerks. |

The entire film was leaked in collusion with GW employees though, which i think of as their way of avoiding German copyright law and supplying something to fans while still reserving all legal rights in the eventuality of an abuse; i.e fans making money of Damnatus.
Of/c officially Damnatus doesn't exist anymore according to the gatekeepers at GW...
