Edited by: Nebulism on 22/09/2009 21:31:50 Dear all,
Now, for an unconventional post! I figured there are quite a few people that play eve, and it only takes the right one to read this hopefully. That said, I am a post graduate from Purdue University holding both a Masters and Bachelors in Nuclear Engineering. I am looking for a job (U.S. based) that utilizes my engineering skillsets.
Through Purdue and my various work experiences, I have built up a wealth of skills including: nuclear physics, programming proficiencies, team management and leadership, and engineering innovation. I have a diverse portfolio that can express this greatly.
I have a great amount of experience using MCNP5 and Geant4 for applications involving nuclear resonance fluorescence, criticality and core design, and medical physics. Additionally, I am well versed in a variety of programming languages having focused recently on C++, Python, and web related languages.
I have obtained valuable experience in project leadership and deadline management as well. During the past year I was in charge of a DHS/DNDO project (though not the finances element). That project can be found here, https://engineering.purdue.edu/IMASS/. My portfolio of work can be viewed via subversion/ftp/or any other option if necessary.
I'll attach my resume below also. If you are interested, feel free to contact me through eve or my email at [email protected] .
Thank you! John Perry Nebulism

Education Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Masters of Science in Nuclear Engineering December 2008 Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering May 2007
Coursework Statics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, Nuclear Structures, Nuclear Materials Applications, Linear Circuit Analysis, High Energy Particle Physics, Nuclear Thermodynamics I & II, Intermediate Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics, Direct Energy Conversion, Nuclear Reactor Statics, Engineering of Nuclear Power Systems, Nuclear Engineering Undergraduate Laboratory I & II, Senior Design Project, Monte Carlo Particle Transport, Parallel Computing, Quantum Mechanics, and Computer Aided Design (CATIA)
Computer Proficiency Design: CATIA, AutoCad, Open-BRL, POVRay, PHP5, MySQL, Blender, Subversion Programming: Python, Java, MATLAB, C/C++, FORTRAN, V-Basic, AGENT, MCNP5, Geant4
Research (DHS/DNDO, NRC, Local Funding) 2009 òAssisted in developing an intelligent Model Assisted Sensing System (https://engineering.purdue.edu/IMASS) that couples Geant4 simulations to physical systems for domestic security purposes. This new methodologyÆs goal is to reliably identify materials while minimizing false alarms. Managed all Geant4 tasks. òCreated a NRC funded website and advanced educational tool for undergraduate students. òDeveloped a coupling method between a GUI and MCNP5 for radiation treatment planning.
Experience Passport Systems Inc. Internship, http://www.passportsystems.com/ 2008 òAssociate Scientist Contract oRan experiments at UCSB (Santa Barbara) to collect NRF data on a variety of targets including: depleted uranium, wood, lead, and aluminum. oAssisted in benchmarking and improving the decision making process for threat identification.
Nuclear Engineering Internship Worked at Oyster Creek Generating Station for Exelon2006 òReactor/Ops Engineering Intern oDesigned LPRM sensor calibration program and became an expert on the LPRM system. oObtained experience in rod for flow swap maneuvers and outage planning.
Engineering Undergraduate Research Assistant2005 Worked for Dr. McDeavitt in his nuclear laboratory òDesigned mechanical device to fit a hydraulic press for extrusion of a fuel rod. oUsed CATIA to produce a schematic for machining. òSystematically created a process to disassemble a thorium contaminated environment. òResearched the effect of Pb-Bi eutectic in next generation reactor coolants.

Have you checked with Pacific NorthWest Labs at Hanford, Washington? If I recall they are under contract with SAIC so you can check with them too.

Now now, if he was a liberal arts major, or an english major I'd suggest that, but having an actual practical degree he does have a chance to get a proper job that fits with it.
That being said, you might want to look internationally. US science seems perpetually under attack by those who feel it... clashes with their worldview

I would offer you 20 bucks to mow my lawn but to be honest you're a little under qualified.
Good luck with your search for a job though, seems like a interesting field of work even if its not in the highest of demand.

or if all else fails im pretty sure theres some countries in the middle east that would like to have you on board... mr gadaffi seems like the kind of employer you want throwing you a birthday party :D

Thanks m8s for the replies.
A good chuckle at the McDonalds and likewise comments :). Interestingly enough, I actually do farm datacores in game for the cash boost.
I have applied to PNNL (worked with a few people from their) as well as quite a few other national labs LANL, Argonne, BAPL, and so forth. The process does take quite a while though due to the economy and most companies are doing internal hiring/freezes at the moment.
The comment about working at England does seem quite interesting (maybe I'll check it out, though not being an English citizen might be difficult).
Again thank you all, and I will keep everyone posted as to how the search goes!

There you go. You can have all the qualifications in the world, but improper use of there, they're, their still causes confusion.
