I'm from Europe and my english writing is bad. But i got 3 questions for you Americans.
1st. What's all with "living in mothers basement" ? If you guys/girls woud come to live in European or Russia, etc.... basements, you woud probaly die in several weeks. We use basements to store a lot of difirent food that needs cold and most of us build central heating system.
2nd. "American dream" (??) I have seen on youtube **** loads of people staying without a home in 1 day . In Europe u need have IQ less 50, to get such loans and be on the street in 1 day. Are you Americans starting to waking up ?
3rd. Do you guys actualy believe that Europe has bigger resecion then USA ? Becouse i can tell you from the 1st. hand on the spot, that Europe is 90% beter and stable then USA in this second.
I feel bad for you guys/girl, that tv's are pumping this nonsense in your mind .
Tnx and i want to see really the response to the "mothers basement", i'm seriusly curios.

1st. "living in your moms basment" is an insult that insenuates that you are unable or unwilling to care for yourself(job/home) therefore you have to live in your moms basement.
2nd. American dream is the "ideal" that if you work hard and are inventive and resourceful you can be successful and support yourself and/or your family. the idea is that nothing really matters but your ingenuity and hard work-ethic. those people you see without homes are usualy people who are to lazy to support themselves and have no basement to live in. most of these people are undesirables like kanye west
3. yes, because you do. over here in America we dont practice socialism even though some of our leaders like that sort of thing. the fact that we are capitalist and hard working means our recessions are much less severe than that of socialist countries like kenya

they have their constitution which is their rights, granted they lost some during their patriot act by Bush, what do we have that compares to that in the UK.
they can defend their homes from intruders, granted they would most likely be sued by the criminals in some states, then again in the UK you can be arrested if you use excesive force.

US econemy is crap for one reason right now. they are running off Debt, Their exports to import ratio sucks. also the Petro Dollor and also to many countries own US debt, only takes one to dump it or change currency and use the trade war and the US is in Big trouble.

Americans hardworking hahahahaha You are funny.
That's why Americans can't compete with foreign labour. The issue is that you all work hard for big money. But if you were being paid what the Chinese are you would barely lift a finger. You will say this isn't China! It's America! You need to look around and see that China practically owns the United States now. They finance your debt, they sell you their products, and at the end of the day, the money comes from somewhere.
Soon you will run out of money. We will see how hardworking Americans are as they rebuild their once great nation. |

But instead we pay them a few hundred billion dollars to pay for it. Yea we're totally not socialist.
Anyway no I think the recession (although it is in fact a depression) is far worse here than in the EU countries.

Most of the other questions were answered already so I will handle the american dream.
This phrase is an old one, I am unsure when it was created but it was used heavily during the early twentieth century when describing why immigrants wished to come to America.
In it's basic form, it means the wish to be successful, have a family and a job one loves... And during this time America did indeed give the immigrants the ability(while not the means) to accomplish the "American dream".
Today it is a bit of a cliche', however the meaning has yet to change... The wish to become successful, have a loving family and have a job you love and are good at. While the dream hasn't changed, America has lost alot of it's freedoms and civil rights in the last ten to twenty years and therefore while we claim to give the means for such a dream, we really do not give people the ability unless they cut through so much red tape it is unbelievable. So therefore that is why it seems like bit misguided to still speak about the American dream, don't get me wrong it can still happen, it just isn't as easy as it used to be in the olden' days.
As far as Americans not being hardworking, I believe we can be, however we expect much more money then that of china or most other countries for our products and thus businesses begin to use workers from those countries rather then America.

You see right there is where 99% of people mess up. What you see on television even if it is a news show is not really connected to reality. If your only window into america is the lulz ******ed stuff that gets broadcast then I can understand why you feel that way. I'm sure muslims in general would just love to kill every news show producer that portrays the average citizen as a socially backwards camel riding suicide bomber in waiting.
As far as the 'living in the basement' allegory its meant to portray a person who is living at home off his parents for faaaaar past the time he should. For a european it would be the equivalent of 'living in the carriage house' with the horses.

What the **** are you talking about we don't practice socialism?
Libraries Public schools Departments of Transportation (the entire road network that spans this entire country is built and inspected by them) NASA (HOLY ****! We went to the moon because of socialism!) US Department of Agriculture (they make sure companies are not selling you food that is rotten/unfit for human consumption) Food and Drug Administration (They make sure the medications and certain foods you eat won't kill you) Police Fire fighters The US Postal Service (the insignificant cost of stamps is NOT what keeps them going) Weather services (including bad weather warning systems) FEMA (LOL ok, not the best example, but it does work if you're not ****ing ******ed at filling out paper work) US Department of Energy (They make sure you have uninterupted electricity that powers your homes) Sewage treatment plants National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (your car is not a poorly manufactured disaster waiting to happen because of these guys) Environmental Protection Agency (your fuel that powers your car is of a certain quality and won't detonate your engine because of these guys) Federal Reserve Bank (they print your money) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (you can thank them for all the laws and regulations that keep your arms and fingers attached to your body at work and that you don't have to carry around hazardous chemicals and materials without protective equipment)
And if thats not enough for you then how about this one? The internet you are now using was developed by Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration which is a government run and funded program that is non profit. Theres a whole hell of a lot more I did not list but I figure you get the point by now. I could keep going if you like though.
I'd say America is pretty damn socialist for being a capitalist society.

A lot of Americans don't understand what socialism entails. Thanks to mass media and years of listening to talking heads,a lot of people in the US seem to associate socialism with death panels, the Soviet Union, oppression, gulags and hardcore communism in general.
It's the same phenomenon as what happened to the word liberal, which has gone from having a positive connotation to being used as a condemnation and curse.
That's not to say that there aren't arguments against further socialization of the country, but rather that some of the most vocal anti-socialists rail against it without even knowing what it means.
Also, the "Bwahaha lolAmerican economy" stuff from non-Americans in this thread is pretty fun. Global economics isn't a zero-sum game. China and Europe don't gain from a failure in the US economy, they lose from it.

see the mother's basement bit above. although my parent's basement is somewhat heated, lots of pipes and stuff down there, wouldn't want those to freeze. also a lot of it is used as storage space.
dunno, but there are many people who lose their homes because they do stupid things, like take large loans and only pay back interest and never actually pay the loan, and eventually the bank says enough, time to start paying the loan back. eventually they run out of money and then the bank takes the house. although some time back the American dream got changed to mean you are entitled to various privileges because you live in America. which is utter *******s, and some people just don't understand things.
probably not, read that France and Germany ended their "recessions" a while back.
and tbh I really wish they let gm fail. fail business is fail. You're posting again!? Has it really been 5 mins?

Things that are better in USA than Europe:
There are many immigrants in states from all over the world and ever since school you're taught that this diversity is cool. In comparison my eastern european homeland is much more conservative when it comes to embracing diversity.
Freedom of speech, thought, and religion is promoted which I think leads to move creativity, innovation, and more entrepreneurial activity.
Things that suck about USA:
Education sucks. When my family immigrated I was about 3 years ahead of whatever they taught here. Schools are just facepalming kind of fail. No wonder that such a huge percentage of population believes in such things as intelligent design and creationism.
Capitalism is a system where your achievements are measured by how much money you can make out of it. Unfortunately this leads to all kind of fail. In my field of study, for example, this means that the companies will seek to develop medicines that suppress symptoms rather than cure individual of the disease because obviously if the person remains sick they will be stuck buying the drug all life long generating more money for the company. Capitalism in its raw is a very flawed system.
Europe seems to do a better job of suppressing all these right-wing religious nuts that flourish in US.

One note on the basement issue. We've already covered the whole insult part of it, but over here there's about a 50-50 split on how basements are used.
Unless you're really poor (like my mom growing up) or storing a wine collection, basements aren't a place where food MUST be stored. Many do have extra freezers or refrigerators for storing more food, or just shelf space for canned and boxed food - an extended pantry if you will. Also they'll store crap they've accumulated over time in boxes, and seasonal doodads, odds and ends, the washer and dryer, work bench and tools, water heater, meth lab, etc.
Then there are the many who turn their basement into an extra room or rooms. An entertainment or game room, or even an extra bedroom. My grandma's basement actually had four sections, so there was the living room part with fireplace and wood flooring, then through a door were the other three rooms with storage and utility equipment. Her's had central heating and the water heater in one, and could have even had a pantry area like above if they had wanted, plus a storage area, all still separate from the livable, furnished part.
So living in your parents' basement doesn't have to be an insult, given how spacious they could be, especially if they have a private entrance. Many people probably rent theirs out for extra income in those circumstances, even to their children.
I should also note that some people use theirs to determine how much rain they've gotten. When the water in the basement gets to waist height, they need to start planning.
So over here basements are used for much more than cold storage, and many homes don't even have them. They seem to be far more common in the eastern part of the country than the west, or at least southern west. I haven't lived in a house with a basemen since I was a kid in Ohio. In California and Arizona they're rather uncommon.

In the parts of western Europe I know, only old houses have basements, and they tend to be cold damp places, maybe with some dirty ancient brick floor, no light etc. My relatives and their friends in the mid west USA all have modern big basements that are dry, warn because the boiler is there, with skylights etc. Most of them have added den type rooms, or a 'workshop' - a male retreat type area equivalent to the garden shed, greenhouse or garage in the UK.
The 'in momma's basement' insult is just a variation of '(you will be) still living with your parents at 30' in the UK, but in other parts of Europe it is standard and accepted that you live at your parents until you marry, so I guess the insult doesn't translate as easily there.

They finance your debt, they sell you their products, and at the end of the day, the money comes from somewhere.
Soon you will run out of money. We will see how hardworking Americans are as they rebuild their once great nation.
china is just financing our productivity. America has the highest productivity per worker of any country, mostly due to the American worth ethic and profit motive. this doesn't exist in socialist countries.
china exports goods solely due to the low cost of labor. once their wages reach that of other developed countries what will be left? a culture of pinko communism and dependency on the gubment
America is the best country on earth. its quite obvious if you get out of karl marx's rear end
