Edited by: Kara Sharalien on 27/09/2009 13:42:12 there is often discussion on these boards about things being "overpowered".
local is one that often comes up, another one that was mentioned in another of my threads is the ability to use the friends list as an intel tool.
when i read that, an interesting thought struck me. how can local, or the friends list, or any other thing that is accessible to all players in the same form on strength no matter of age, corp, alliance, skillpoints, ships or training directions, be overpowered?
practical example:
CortTs and his men invaded south america several hundred years ago, they had cannons and steel against stone arrows and leather armor.
their weaponry was overpowered (even though their army was very small) and the aztec empire didnt have very good kinetic resists apparently. CortTs won.
if the aztecs had also had steel and gunpowder, the aztecs would have won, because they had the same equipment and would have won simply though their natural advantages of superior numbers and knowledge of the area.
the point is, if all sides are equipped evenly, i fail to see how anything can be overpowered. all other things being equal, the side with natural advantages such as size and skill will win. it seems to me that the people whining about local or the friends list (or even to an extent less clear cut items like cloaking devices) simply lost because they weren't good enough to survive against their foes in the first place.
discuss.

Your mistake is thinking instead of just hopping on the whine bandwagon.
Go on now.

you feel that if cortes had been equipped with stone arros and leather, he still would have won?
this is not the case. the locals would never have defected if cortes had not obliterated their resistance with his superior technology. the Luminare titan: lets pop that *****! http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1175042&page=1 |

Its easy to blame it all on the whinewagon, but in fact there are and has been elements in eve pvp that does not have a proper counter.

You're forgetting about professions, or play-styles.
Certain features, like local, favor certain play-styles, like 0.0 ratting.
What you're saying is everybody should follow the optimal play-style.
I can see a few problems with that.

Just because we all have access to it, doesn't mean we all want to use it.
For example, when thoraxs had heavy drones, no other cruiser could compete with it, which meant the thorax was grossly over powered. We all could train and fly it, but not everyone wants to fly a thorax, so its over powered to the caldari, minmatar and amarr cruiser fans.
Something is overpowered when its the only strategy that is viable. ---------------------------------------- ohai! :D |

The Portuguese and Spanish also had cavalry, which was incredibly demoralizing to the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas as they had never seen such war beasts before - not to mention the fact that cavalry is pretty damn effective against irregular infantry. -----

Oh an to be honest, local is overpowered. I would bet 0.0 pvp would be more exciting if local wasremoved. More of a challenge to both parties, it would require some decent logistics and an overall higher level of gameplay. It would bring some cruelness back into the universe

Not to mention european diseases that helped weaken the local populace.

Everyone in real life is suddenly given access to a nuke pad with a load of numbers on it. Each number corresponds with a country, determined by size. Is this weapon overpowered? Yes. Yet everyone has access to it. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Oh god don't hook it up to a number pad. People can't be trusted around buttons. It is just something in the human mind that says "MUST PRESS BUTTON!!!!!" (it even pronounces the extras exclamation points when screaming it!). Especially if there is a warning sign/label anywhere near the button. Then the mind screams "WHY IS THERE A WARNING! I MUST KNOW!!!!!!", which is odd because it could just have the eyes read the warning label/sign but that is never good enough.
Maybe some type of rotary system or a bunch of levers and pullies that require extra effort. Then it would be a balanced system.

Easy: if something is overpowered, then all other options are obsolete and anyone relying on those other options can only really choose between "get the overpowered thing" or "lose". If everyone has the overpowered thing (which they will, eventually, since those are the only two options), then there is no longer any variety, only a matter of who uses the thing first and/or most often. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

the difference being that this is a game. some people are uninterested in using a certain game mechanic to 'win' at eve, and so the idea of say for example titans being overpowered is a concern for some people because they do not, nor ever will have a titan or a titan killing squad.

Apparently you missed it when OP said "this is a ******ed argument, one i will not consider".

Cortez didn't even have to fight them. They were visited by a white guy hundreds of years earlier who they thought was a god, and when they saw cortez they thought it was him returning.

This is spot on.
When something is overpowered it basically comes down to who has more of it or who uses it first which is hardly fun for anyone. That's not balanced.

You are wrong btw. Aztecs didn't loose becouse of lacking superior weapons, they lost becouse of their "leader": the most of the people wanted to fight, they had the chance to annihilate the enemy army in a wonderful ambush after they traveled several months through dangerous places, so they were tired and weak. But the Aztec "leader" (Motecuzoma, lately named Montezuma by the spanish) was afraid of them being 'gods' so he said "no no, we don't fight, we will give them gold, so they will be friends".
Well... epic fail.

Thing is 'overpowered' if everyone uses this thing as using something else is disadvantage. For example if everyone in game would fly Kestrels with torpedoes that do full damage on hit regardless of target size one might conclude that this kestrel is overpowered.
