Your idea of factions being forced? No. This is a sandbox game, not a linear MMO.
You're mining asteroids in a ship that's not designed for it most likely. You can easily earn 10Mill isk/hr in highsec in the right ship. More then that with friends and other specialized ships.
Mission.. You're on lvl 2 of 5. Missions are for makeing isk. That's it. They're not quests like in other mmo's that give you all the back story to the game. A very few will give you tidbits, but they're there to make isk. Having trouble in your missions? then learn to do them right. it's like anything else. IF you don't know how to do it properly, you suck at it. If you do, then you excel at it.
Having trouble finding the mods you need for your ships? Try going to a trade hub. Use the market window, ask friends, hell, ask on the forums, Folks will help you.
Salvageing is part of missions. You kill, you loot, you salvage, you get LP, you get bounties, you get rewards. Each on their own sucks. Add them all up and you can make major coin. In highsec with the right skills, the right ships, the right experience, you can make upwards of 75Mil an hour. It's not fun, but it works.
If you want hard numbers on how "powerful" a ship is, then learn the math of the game. Technical parts of each ship, each fitting, each playstyle will vary.
You can have 2 people, with exactly the same skills, the same ships, the same fittings. EVERYTHING exactly the same. And they STILL won't be an even match, because one person is going to have more actual real life pvp experience, or one will have a better tactic on how to use that ship in pvp.
Once you've played for a few months, you'll understand that certain ships, in standard setups will work in certain roles in certain ways. I know that's vague, but you'll understand a year from now.
As many have pointed out, in game skills, ships, mods, and so on can be easily negated by RL skills.
Things like knowing Which ship should be used close in, at range, with low transfersal, with high transfersal, solo, in gangs, as a scout, as a tank, as a tackler, as support, as ECM, as a cloaky cloaky...
ALL of this is RL SKILL based. you can have a char with every skill to lvl 5, in the most expensive ship, with the most expensive mods in game, and an experienced PVPer in a T1 Ship, with T1 fittings will kick your ass.
Due to simple real life experience and skill.
There are thousands of examples of people in Multi Billion isk PVP ships, being killed by people in T1 ships simply because they have NO clue how to PVP, and the guys in the T1 ships do. It happens every day.
