Yet he was right. The thing i saw was: - generic shooter (nothing special over what ive seen till now) - empty locations (and way too large distances between cover) - generic weapons
If this game wants to sell it needs more than "it is EVE but as an FPS". I know its still a bit till its get released but tbh at current level... every PS3 shooter (tpp/fpp, whatever) looks better and has some selling point. Hell even SOCOM (which imo sucks) looks better :X

I have to wonder if WIS is going to be some sort of middle ground for interactions between players in Eve and players in Dust. If Eve players are going to be allowed to make contracts for combat to Dust players WIS in my mind would be the perfect meeting place. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 07/10/2009 04:11:43 Some things off the top of my head;
Map looks crap, if at all posing as a FPS/RTS you need to improve the map, if only for the RTS crowd.
Weaponry, same gun always? FPS people tend to love their guns & ammo, did I miss something here? The universal gun ain't going to sit well with the FPS people.
Movement and concealment, I did not see any crouching, lying down or leaning in this video, I sure hope there is and that you not just forgot about the survival instinct of people under fire. Hiding, it's going to be hard to do with such perhaps realistic but somewhat clean environments, especially if even the enemy comes with a big ass sign flying over their heads at all times.
Btw, was friendly fire off too? That's a turn-off to have turned off.
Gameplay, I hope it'll be more advanced than both sides having a command ship that needs taking out, the end.
Night commando raids where you kidnap/murder a scientist/CEO, sabotage of a specific installation or a takeover of a sensitive installation prohibiting the use of certain weapons...
Atmospheric flight on the other hand looks very interesting. All missiles or railguns too?
Should/would/could have, HAVE you chav!

The idea is to bring console users and PC users together on EVE. We fly the ships in space, they run around the planet and we meet up in stations as we walk about or something like that. So I don't think it will be released on the PC as it wouldn't make much sense.

Well, they specifically stated that it's only a prototype so far… which, admittedly, is worrisome on a completely different level.
Quote: Movement and concealment, I did not see any crouching, lying down or leaning in this video, I sure hope there is and that you not just forgot about the survival instinct of people under fire. Hiding, it's going to be hard to do with such perhaps realistic but somewhat clean environments, especially if even the enemy comes with a big ass sign flying over their heads at all times.
This tend to depend on the game type. Dust seems more geared towards the Halo kind of gameplay than, say, BF (not to mention tacshooters, where those things are vital).
Quote: Night commando raids where you kidnap/murder a scientist/CEO, sabotage of a specific installation or a takeover of a sensitive installation prohibiting the use of certain weapons...
All of these tend to require a bit more complexity, especially if you add them to a fMMO (fM for fairly massive) — they work very well in scripted singleplayer/coop games, but beyond that, you get the fairly simplistic "protect item/spot/NPC X" gameplay like we've seen for a nearly a decade in CounterStrike and Americas Army…
I suppose, as they further develop what players can do with or against each other in Planetary Interaction in EVE, those kinds of missions could come into play as an interesting alternative. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

i think the prototype is well advanced, to have it working like it did in the fanfest final presentation given the speed at which ccp move i think youll find that its ready for deployment in feb or march. Incarna using the same engine will come later around June.
And hopefully by then a PC version will be available for dust

Dont expect it before late 2010. There is an expansion after Dominion that will introduce planetary interaction, dust 514 will not be out before that and it has also been said that it will likely not be out before incarna.

I must say that those ships looked quite nice, but thats about it. The maps looked poor in quality, shaders and other stuff didnt look very good either. I hope this is not the graphical quality when it comes out.
Consol crowd wants to see very nice graphics to buy a game, graphics sell and game play keep players. I would not buy it, if i would see that demo and would be offered to buy it (as eve player i still would tho).
Avarage stuff, and yes animations were avarage too. Bit worrying... Respectfully,

They should start over, from the beginning!
I want mechs in EVE! Seems appropriate, and logical, anyway...we could still be pod pilots. Move our pods from our ships to our mechs.
I'm kidding of course. But, when I started playing this game I always pictured that when planetary interaction finally was a reality it would be in the form of a "Mech Assault" type game. Oh well, I'm still interested in how it's all going to work out. --------------------------------------------------

Originally by: Nomakai Delateriel To be honest it looked like the Commander had almost HL: Natural Selection-like importance. That's rare in FPS games. In fact I can't really name one outside Natural Selection that has that kind of RTS/FPS mix.
I remember Battlezone/Battlezone2 had a nice mix of RTS/FPS way back.
Dust and the new stuff in Eve does look a little cool. Causing havoc on planets with other station spinners :)

Guys, just to remind you this game is still in development. IT can be completely scrapped and changed around in the time they have from now till they release it. Post your worries about what you think needs to be changed and other stuff like that but note that a lot of the issues you are naming are because they probably only put together the bare minimum build of the game to show you what all it will be like.
Call it the skeleton of the game if you will. They still have to put on muscles (game play features, equipment, player movement controls, etc) as well as skin (cleaner graphics, less stiff people, smaller maps or more dynamic detailed maps, etc) on this beast they are creating.
Its a lot of work and it takes time. I'm amazed they had such a nice working demo to show case to us to begin with. either way I'm sure they are taking your thoughts into consideration and are working to fix what is wrong right now.

Que the inevitable people spouting "this prototype doesn't look as good as (insert finished product FPS they currently like)".
Please.
It also might occur to you that if DUST is merely average in graphics and combat options, it will still have a powerful draw for completely different reasons. Better and more meaningful game play, persistent universe, brilliant interaction with EVE, modular fitting of vehicles, the list of things to attract (and more importantly hold) players goes on and on... far beyond the "oh shiny" factor.

Exactly. id rather have a nitty gritty game that doesn't have a lot of shine but a shi-ton of game play ability and features.

Not to mention the fact that CCP really know what they are doing in the graphics department. Just look at the latest planets and incarna..
I think they also won all kinds of awards for best graphics when eve came out in 2003.

Yes. Middle-endian date formats make no sense and makes sorting a hassle. Y-M-D ftw! (Also, 24-hour time format). ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

They should make it possible to capture other soldiers in the game, and have suprise sex with them. Do not think that is in any other games out there.
And I do hope they make jihad vests for suicide runs. That would also be a fairly new thing for FPS games.
Being able to r ape and jihad would make DUST unique. Should not be to hard to code either. --- DUST! A future home for surprise sex and jihad!! |
