Creating a new post ftw.
Have anyone had any luck getting eve to run under ubuntu karmic? Followed this guide to install a patched version of wine.
all I get now is a sad blue, empty windows desktop with nothing in it.
langvann@langvann-desktop:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE$ wine eve.exe err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1 fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x8d0000 0 0x33fc6c 4 fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x338e88,0x00000000), stub! langvann@langvann-desktop:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE$
I hate Karmic, its not easy to revert to jaunty either.

Seems to be a kernel problem - karmic installs 2.6.31-13 -- reverting to 2.6.28-15 (while leaving everything else the same) works for me.

wine eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF
I also suggest running wine in windowed mode. Force it in grapihcs tab in winecfg.
I run all my clients in 1911x1130 All hail the mighty fluffy. The destroyer of worlds! |

Why don't you try to build your own kernel?
Seems that most of your problems seems to be caused by some strange *ubuntu-kernel related patches?

Edited by: Knevah on 13/10/2009 16:15:48 It used to work on earlier builds of Karmic, I think it's a wine bug triggered by a combination of the app, and the kernel you're running on, seems to be this bug:-

doesnt help reverting to an older kernel, and it doesnt work to put the system under load either.

2.6.31-13 from karmic does not work repeatably - deleting caches (or /LUA:OFF) will work sometimes, but not re-launch after changing settings in-game.
Reverting to 2.6.28-15 from Jaunty works (although that has some audio issues).
Installing a locally-compiled 2.6.32-rc4 also works, and does not have sound issues.
It just looks like the 2.6.31 kernel shipping in karmic has issues.
I haven't tried the auto-built vanilla kernel ppa (since I wanted to make local changes anyway), but you could try the packages at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32-rc4/

I noticed that it doesnt work to change settings. stupid me. I tried reverting to 2.6.28-15 but this does not work for me, i have absolutely noe clue as to why this doesnt work.
I booted up in the lastet kernel shipped with Karmic, and now it eve just stops completely after 0.5 seconds of splash screen (even wine window closes)
strace tells me that an ioctl is currently unavailable. Not sure wheter or not this is the problem.
And it is absolutely astonishing that 0.5 seconds of program will actually give strace 36.000 lines of info. (strace wine eve.exe 2> /home/langvann/wat.txt)
Im gonna try to install the newest kernel as soon as I get home, hope this works. if it doesnt work, i might concider removing everything and just reinstall 9.04 again. All hail the mighty fluffy. The destroyer of worlds! |

I seem to be posting this everywhere today. First off try backing down from wine. wine 1.1.30 and 31 seem to have crash issues. It may be only partially related to your Release upgrade. I'm running on 1.1.23, as i understand it 1.1.29 is also fine.
Good luck. Upgrades are painful, however you do it :P

No success with 1.1.23, 1.1.24, 1.1.27, 1.1.28 and 1.1.29. Always the same behaviour - EVE exits a short while after the splash screen.

You really are running it with karmic (9.10)?
Can anyone else confirm running eve/wine under karmic without downgrading to an anchient kernel?
TIA, Kolon

*shakes head* I'm Fedora bunny for Eve. Sorry, I was just throwing in my tuppence to help. The console output looks very similar to the latest wine issues we have with Sisi.
I really dont know what they have changed that causes this. Anyone?
If those that are running Karmic successfully can list exact specs (GFX driver version, wine version, kernel version, and any changes to the Reg or wineconfig). Then you have a chance of seeing what's different.
Have you run down the standard checklist to be sure each thing is covered? dx9 dll present, the fonts file is present, etc (if you need the full list i can find it somewhere)
Sorry I cant be more help.

I have the same problem. Try THIS:
Disconnect from internet. Start eve with wine/cxgames(it was the same thing in both). Connect to the internet; connect to eve. Whenever I had an active internet connection eve wouldn't start up.

Confirmed. Not being connected to the internet gets you to the login screen. After connecting to the internet then, you can login. I could only test it for a few minutes now, but everything seems to work.

TL;DR: every time you want to start EVE, edit prefs.ini and set "bitsCancelled=0"
======================================================
Using latest kernel (2.6.31-14-generic) and Wine (1.1.32). The issue is settings-related; when the settings are empty (as happens the first time running with "/end /LUA:OFF"), EVE starts up perfectly. It won't start if settings are present, so setting those flags will only fix it once.
Removing the file "Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini" allows the game to start up, though obviously that's an annoying step to take every time.
As mentioned above, disabling the network connection also allows EVE to start.
======================================================
If I remove the "bitsCancelled" setting, or set it to "0", EVE starts. Perhaps there is something wrong with Wine's implementation of BITS < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Background_Intelligent_Transfer_Service >?
However, the next time EVE starts, it resets that line and fails to start up again. Removing write permissions prevents eve from starting.
======================================================
For now, my current workaround is to modify my start scripts to copy a backup of prefs.ini on every startup.

I tried this, however it did not work for me :-( I used a "perl -pi -e 's/bitsCancelled=1/bitsCancelled=0/' prefs.ini" instead of backing up, but same as you do really.
The network off method worked fine as a cheap workaround for me, but having to shut down my network every time i boot Eve and get disconnected from all the other programs I have connected was bad for me, so I changed my Eve script to disable the DNS for a short time (given its owned by root), here is my start eve script:
#!/bin/sh START=`date +%s` sudo chmod 700 /etc/resolv.conf cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE && env WINEPREFIX="/home/myuser/.wine" wine explorer /desktop=$START,1280x720 "eve.exe" & sleep 5 sudo chmod 755 /etc/resolv.conf
It may need more than 5 seconds to load Eve on your PC, but hopefully this can be usefull to someone :-)
Oh, and the START variable, is the desktop name, this is just to get a "new name" every time i launch an Eve process instead of having different scripts for it.

bizarrely eve seems pretty happy for me on karmic, with an ati card on a laptop and all....... Still seems buggy with compiz, as to be expected though, that's more due to wine, i had upside down character portaits and all. First run was a complete desktop crash, second run fine.
For me it's mostly sound thats the issue, ventrilo is a bit sporadic on when it wants to play any sounds, any ideas?

Yes I am still having issues with sound. For the longest time I didn't run eve with sound mostly because I was playing at night and didn't want to annoy anyone. Well now I want to use sound, and with Karmic Koala, the sound doesn't work so well with Eve. If I start with a freshly booted environment thus making sure nothing is running. Eve will run fin for a while, but then eventually it will become jittery, and I have to disable sound. I have renabled sound once after many many minutes later, and the sound was nice for a while, but the jitter came back again.
I'd like that to be fixed since I would really like to have sound now.

Sorry to report that the wine eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF only worked for a short time for me. Also tried editing the prefs to 0 and that never worked.
Something i have found is that my game will stop all of a sudden for no reason. All on its own. When that happens I usually have to restart xserver to get eve working again. Any ideas on how to fix that?

I had that on my gf's PC, not my own. Sound worked fine for a while, then it stuttered like it was being played back sloooowly.
Since I upgraded my wine (and no longer have this issue in 1.1.32), her fix was under winecfg->audio under there was an option to emulate (.. something, hardware? - it was a checkbox) but that option is gone in this new wine so cant check it. Try toggle that, might fix it for you.
(On a side note, just me experiencing eve forums has a 2 minute working, then 2 minute not responding to HTTP requests, and then 2 minute working, then..? - did they switch back to IIS? heh)

For the newbies (me); How does one upgrade to the latest kernel? If possible link me to a Kernelupgrades for dummies-guide or describe each step as if I was really, really dumb (I truly am :) )
I run ubuntu 32bit and upgraded to the Koala thingie.

no idea how to this on Ubuntu (check the Ubuntu forums, there HAS to be at least 10 guide on how to do it, for example). One thing to keep in mind is that changing a kernel can be tricky, especially if this is the 1st time for you. make sure to backup all your data etc
A pretty decent HOWTO on how to compile your own kernel and install it can be found here. Ubuntu seems to go out of its way to make it difficult to use vanilla kernels though so ... use at your own risks
tbh, probably a bit advanced but compiling and installing your own kernel is a great learning experience ... if you are interested

Confirmed BITS workaround effective here.
I modified my shortcut command to do this every time (its all one line):
sed -i 's/bitsCancelled=1/bitsCancelled=0/' ~/.wine/drive_c/users/$LOGIN_NAME/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini; env WINEPREFIX="/home/$LOGIN_NAME/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
Just change $LOGIN_NAME to whatever your unix login name is. Run in a terminal first to check the paths are correct for your install.

Question for noobs: how do you create a script in Linux? Have tried the logoff method as the bitsControlled also doesn't work but when you are in login don't update the stat and always seems there is no Internet, so in adittion no Internet at all. ------ Skills |
