It used to work on earlier builds of Karmic, I think it's a wine bug triggered by a combination of the app, and the kernel you're running on, seems to be this bug:-

wine eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF

I also suggest running wine in windowed mode.
Force it in grapihcs tab in winecfg.

I run all my clients in 1911x1130

2.6.31-13 from karmic does not work repeatably - deleting caches (or /LUA:OFF) will work sometimes, but not re-launch after changing settings in-game.

Reverting to 2.6.28-15 from Jaunty works (although that has some audio issues).

Using latest kernel (2.6.31-14-generic) and Wine (1.1.32). The issue is settings-related; when the settings are empty (as happens the first time running with "/end /LUA:OFF"), EVE starts up perfectly. It won't start if settings are present, so setting those flags will only fix it once.

Removing the file "Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini" allows the game to start up, though obviously that's an annoying step to take every time.

As mentioned above, disabling the network connection also allows EVE to start.

If I remove the "bitsCancelled" setting, or set it to "0", EVE starts. Perhaps there is something wrong with Wine's implementation of BITS < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Background_Intelligent_Transfer_Service >?

However, the next time EVE starts, it resets that line and fails to start up again. Removing write permissions prevents eve from starting.

For now, my current workaround is to modify my start scripts to copy a backup of prefs.ini on every startup.

I tried this, however it did not work for me :-(
I used a "perl -pi -e 's/bitsCancelled=1/bitsCancelled=0/' prefs.ini" instead of backing up, but same as you do really.

The network off method worked fine as a cheap workaround for me, but having to shut down my network every time i boot Eve and get disconnected from all the other programs I have connected was bad for me, so I changed my Eve script to disable the DNS for a short time (given its owned by root), here is my start eve script:

#!/bin/sh
START=`date +%s`
sudo chmod 700 /etc/resolv.conf
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE && env WINEPREFIX="/home/myuser/.wine" wine explorer /desktop=$START,1280x720 "eve.exe" &
sleep 5
sudo chmod 755 /etc/resolv.conf

and add the ip adress for eve-online.com in your /etc/hosts file may ensure Eve can connect even without dns. It may need more than 5 seconds to load Eve on your PC, but hopefully this can be usefull to someone :-)

Oh, and the START variable, is the desktop name, this is just to get a "new name" every time i launch an Eve process instead of having different scripts for it.

Confirmed BITS workaround effective here.

sed -i 's/bitsCancelled=1/bitsCancelled=0/' ~/.wine/drive_c/users/$LOGIN_NAME/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini; env WINEPREFIX="/home/$LOGIN_NAME/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"

Just change $LOGIN_NAME to whatever your unix login name is. Run in a terminal first to check the paths are correct for your install.
