I'm curious. What happens if a capsuleer dies without being in his capsule. As far as I know the computer that scans his brain and sends it to the new clone is attached to the capsule. And it's only in DUST that they finally have it small enough to be in a helmet. And even then capsuleers don't really wear helmets.
Does anyone have an answer for this? Thanks |

Yes. You die. For good. It happened in at least one of the CCP short stories, I can't be bothered to look it up. |

Normally, upon death, the Cylons' consciousnesses are downloaded into new identical bodies on the Cylon homeworld, but for humanoid Cylons located farther and farther away from home - such as those hidden within the human refugee fleet - this is not possible, as the download range of a humanoid Cylon is limited. For this reason, when the Cylons began pursuing the Fleet, they incorporated a Resurrection Ship at the center of their pursuit force, to provide their agents with a fallback position; if they were killed, their consciousnesses could be downloaded to new bodies without concern. Without that ship, a killed Cylon would truly die, as their consciousnesses also would be cut off.

The way most of us RPers handle it is "Soft clones". IE a clone you have had made and stored previously. The downside is that it is only an exact copy up to the point the clone was made.

It's at least possible to duplicate people.
The Broker does it in the fiction.
So you duplicate yourself and leave that clone in cold storage. Updating every so often.
(Dust bunnies work in a /totally/ different fashion to Capsuleers, by the fiction. Their brains are constantly synced up with other copies, by means of a quantum entangled implant. Not on the point of death only)
And looking at jump clones, it's possible to at the very least, copy nondestructively. And later update the other nondestructively. FuzzWork Enterprises http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/

If it ever becomes an in game issue CCP will update the lore. At the moment there is a bit of a hole there. In some chronicles, like "Jita 4-4" pod pilots were out of the pod, walking about in the depths of the station and not overly concerned about dying, implying there must be something that saves you. The "soft clone" mentioned above is one idea.
Another is to say we too have an implant that keeps the clone updated, just not as well as the Dust guys have, it tends to run a hour behind. If the game actually has us die out of pod, we would wake up in the med clone less 1000 skill points. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Wasn't this the whole point of the trailer released at fanfest?
The whole point of the pod was the transfer technology, though now they have an implant so that dusties (and future WiSers) are now "immortal" with the implant.

I would love to. Thanks for the answer. I assumed at the beginning that the capsuleer would lose all of his skill points and wake up in a dumb clone. However the 'soft clone' idea makes sense. |

- Like some people said, you would awake in a "soft clone", which is a backup you update now and then just in case. Rigth now, it isn't a game mechanic because... Well, we can't die out of pods. Or you could assume that this is already inside your medical clone pack.
- DUST brain snapshoot tech is inside the dusters head, with a sleeper reverse-engineered tech implant. |

Actually given the ship the people come into the station in (the Echelon for those who cant be bothered to check) im more inclined to think its reverse engineered Sansha tech, although i havent read templar 1 (does it specifically say sleeper tech in there?). |

What do you mean with people coming into station in Echelons? Yes, the book revolves totally about the tech being of sleeper origin. Sansha appear around too, but I don't want to spoil it. I'll only say that it has nothing to do with dusters tech. |

The main issue of a pod pilot is that through his pod he is able to pilot a craft in a much superior way to ships flown by crews who do not operate their craft with the speed of thought.
The pod also makes is possible to take a "snapshot" of your personality at the moment of death and also induce death when destruction of the clone seems imminent. However that is not its main function, this function can be done by any lab equipment.
The dust implants are something completely different, they are based on or use sleeper implants that are not totally understood. They are able to transmit the personality and thoughts and essence of person, as said through quantum entanglement, to another clone, greatly speeding up the cloning and transfer and especially the needed equipment of such a transfer.
This tech is like I said not fully understood so using it does contain risks and its quite possible long terms effects are not positive. Capsuleers could however incorperate this tech into their clones and implants and thus be (more) safe when leaving their pods.
Their pod's would still retain their status though, because they are the essence of what makes a capsuleers so dangerous. Killing with thought at the speed of light. That and the fact you just can't kill em. - [yellow]English only please. Zymurgist[/yellow] |

For Capsuleers... Beyond the capsule we'd be screwed - one of the reasons I don't leave my capsule often, it's not like there's any need to after all... The way I would work it if I had to (if there were something I needed to do outside a capsule; a dodgy deal I didn't want fluid router logs for... heck, an ability to open The Door so "pleasurable company" could get into my quarters ) would be to request the cloning facility keep a complete record of my next scan, a back-up which could be downloaded to another clone in the event of... "incidents".

The stories imply that you will survive being killed outside of your pod. In game this has never happened, so until it is possible we don't know the mechanism. Probably a full dump right as you leave your capsule to go walking around. Maybe that is why the WiS loading screen takes so long. |

Excerpt from EVE: The Empyrean Age Copyright 2008 by CCP hf.
Before Tibus could answer, the Broker jumped back and pulled himself on top of the assembly line. Moving quickly, he darted in between the half-constructed armor components and cast molds, working his way towards the alloy smelters.
Dozens of workers herded toward the assembly line and strained over each other to watch as the broker climbed to the maintenance platform, emerging just below the sixth smelter in the line. To everyone's suprise, he activated the release vent. As molten alloy poured into the mold casing below, the Broker stepped off the platform. He vaporized in a fiery flash of orange steam, all but disappearing from the existence as the vat of liquid metal consumed him.
Tibus Heth, too stunned to speak, stared at his right hand - the one he had used to make his pact with the Broker. His heart nearly stopped when the earpiece in his satchel bagan to ring.
The broker is a capsuleer, and the person on the phone was the Broker.
I guess books copyrighted by CCP don't count as lore?
The only thing that can kill a capsuleer is to not have a clone.
