I'm interested in hearing opinions on Caldari PVP - I've been working missile/shield skills and attempting to find good fits, and aside from passive-tanked drakes, I've been unimpressed. Is my first impression wrong, or are caldari ships far too nerfed for anything other than mission running? |

Caldari rocks at PVP.
Hint, passive tanks sucks. Buffer is the way. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The biggest problem with Caldari ships is that RRBS are the new black, but the other 3 races armor tank.
So your Caldari ship can't play their reindeer games.
Well actually it can, but you are far from optimized for it.

Well there are these light missile Caracals that seem to kill off small ships pretty well. Merlins, a bit slow compared to other frigates, but have very nice tank and 4 mid slots making them good for baiting and killing interceptors. Blackbirds, cheapest and most effective e-war cruisers in game. Torp-ravens, high dps at much greater range than the megathron. Eagles capable of killing frigs and even pods from 150-200km where sniper apoc hopelessly misses. Covops are pretty much same as other races. Caldari SB is even better because it has 1 more mid than other SBs to fit extra painters or damps or even a shield extender. Caldari interceptors my impression is that they kind of suck. People like Crows and I guess they are ok if you can catch anyone who can't hit your from 20km with drones or any sort of weapons, personally don't like them, and they don't even an extended point range. Harpy never flown one but heard some good accounts of it, one player even had a faction fit that could tank lowsec sentry guns. Hawk bait af I guess? Rook/falcon some of best recon ships out there. Cerberus, never liked, best for ratting than pvp. If you like to pvp as a carebear you get a Cerberus and keep away from your gang while they take the hit, killmail *****, then warp off before anything can catch you. And yes then there is the Drake

Let's not forget the Scorpion.
Though you might know them by their nickname: Primary!
When your ship is among the first that enemy FCs want removed from the field, that speaks volumes about its effectiveness.

A torp Raven is freaking nasty in terms of shear DPS, and one of the most feared ships to see in a big blob.
The Harpy is probably my favorite assault frigate in the game.
A Scorpion is an immediate primary because it's such a bloody effective ECM boat.
And speaking of amazing ECM boats, the Rook is probably one of the best ships in all of EVE.
The Phoenix is probably the second best Dread in the game (second to the Revelation ... though you could make a strong argument for the Moros).
The Chimera is the prettiest ship in the game, period.
But yeah, the Caldari have great PVP platforms.

-Kestrel; decent T1 frigate(it's no Rifter though)
-Blackbird; best T1 cruiser in the game
-Caracal; fair frigate killer with AMLs
-Drake; best bait BC
-Scorpion; can be made awesome bait or ruin a small gangs day
-Raven; massive dps potential in torpedoe configuration, needs friends though
-Rokh; top notch fleet sniper and possible comedy blaster fit
-Rook/Falcon; powerful recons to take out numbers, paper thin and insta-primary
-Cerberus, decent anti-support platform
-Basilisk; essential in large fleet fight for remote cap transfer
-Kitsune, potential, but imo the whole EAS line needs work The 'Fendahlian Collective' strikes again |

Agreed on the Kitsune. A great little Ewar platform in theory, but the whole electronic attack frig attribute lineup needs to be revamped, IMO. They just get one-volleyed. Rare to see a Kitsune last longer than a few seconds.

The fact that even guys who think they know caldari ships don't think a rokh does blasters well is amusing.

Caldari have by far the best ewar platforms, their logistics is very useful, the rokh is kinda sexy. Missile boats have their place in large scale pvp but its rather unglamorous (anti-support). In solo or small scale pvp caldari are always at a disadvantage because sheild tanks use med slots otherwise needed for tackling gear/sensor boosters/eccm. Really they aren't any better or worse than other races, just less sexy/fashionable.

The greatest weakness of caldari ships is the PvE mentality of its pilots. Lose that and you have a great collection of ships to fly.

Caldari have a number of excellent PVP platforms. To be honest I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Ferox and the Moa, as both of those are excellent--and cheap--blaster platforms. They don't pack the raw DPS of the Gallente, but they've got a helluva tank.
It's true that it's harder to solo with Caldari, but it's not impossible. Moa and Harpy are both good solo platforms. So are the Ferox and the Drake, but they're pretty slow.

I tend to agree.
Originally by: Light Echo A torp Raven is freaking nasty in terms of shear DPS, and one of the most feared ships to see in a big blob.
It's range is too short for most blob fights. The only place where torp ravens really shine is in 1vs1 BS fights. For "real" PVP they're pretty worthless imo. They won't hit anything smaller then a BS for any decent damage unless they fit many painters and then their EHP drops to laughable levels. Ravens are basically a no-no in any serious PVP alliance CTA (unless it's a specialized or dedicated Op).
Originally by: Light Echo The Harpy is probably my favorite assault frigate in the game.
It's nice but it still lacks any sort of role. It's not great at any one thing so also tends to be pretty worthless (like all AFs).
Originally by: Light Echo A Scorpion is an immediate primary because it's such a bloody effective ECM boat.
Scorp is win for fleet fights but as you say it's insta-primary so that is a bit of a drawback.
Originally by: Light Echo And speaking of amazing ECM boats, the Rook is probably one of the best ships in all of EVE.
Bad (non-existent) damage, no tank, short ECM range, no tackle. Can't really see much use for it. I'd fly a scorp over Rook any day.. Especially because you're losing 100mil for the rook and perhaps 20-30mil for the scorp.
Originally by: Light Echo The Phoenix is probably the second best Dread in the game (second to the Revelation ... though you could make a strong argument for the Moros).
The Phoenix is by far the WORST dread in existence... A dreads job is to deal high DPS on static targets. The Phoenix does about 30% less damage then any other dread. It's tank doesn't compensate. A further drawback is the fact that you can't snipe because your citadel torps will take 15 minutes to hit at 150km. You also can't hurt sub-capitals because missile damage is dependent on signature radius. All other dreads at least have a chance to hit a BS on snipe range - the Phoenix may hit but will do 100 damage and the BS has 15 minutes time to see the torps inbound and simply war. So no, Phoenix is a heap of crap. Our alliance is even considering dropping the reimbursement for caldari dreads - thats how bad they are.
