I wouldn't remove self-destructs entirely, but perhaps if you are under active attack it takes 5x as long or something. Similar to if you loggoffski in combat, your ship stays in space longer.

Self destructing should cause AoE damage, like smartbombs. The bigger the ship, the larger the AoE radius and damage done from the self destruct.
They should also produce a killmail.

No problems with dieing if you log off in combat. Thats why that timer is there, to make sure you have a chance to die. The same system could be extended to cover the self destruct timer. If you are under attack/have aggro your self destruct could be 15 min instead of 2.

What is sweet is the pirate tears that a self-destruct (and thus the denial of kill-mails and loot) can bring. The ship was lost anyway, but this one form of fighting back cannot be taken away.

It can be funny. Perhaps get a KM but still not drop loot? Wouldn't change any balance, just OOG killboards would care. Causing someone to self destruct is basically killing them.

Excellent suggestion, particularly as it should silence the FW objections.
Otherwise - hearing some pirate-wannabe coming to C&P crying about how self-destruct has spoiled his fun sounds a lot like pirate tears to me. Or wannabe-tears, not that there is much difference. Hmm.. I seem to be trolling so I will stop except for one last observation - they are not MY tears as I am not the OP now am I?

Generally when a merc corporation is employed it is to cause damage to an enemy corporation. Killmails act as indicators of performance to the contractor of the mercenary corporation.
Regardless of the amount of time it takes, the person self-destructed as a direct result of the merc corporation attacking them. Therefore, the merc corporation is responsible for the damages to said corp. In turn, the damages happened because the mercs were employed against the corp, and the killmail provides a way to confirm this to the employer.

had some -10s try and hold my battleship hostage and said "eject your ship and we'll spare your pod". i was not about to throw 100 mil down the drain just like that (let alone give it to them) so that's where the self-destruct came in. idk if other ppl can see u initate the self-destruct but the 2 minute countdown passed and i got my money back and my pod stayed intact.
if it wasn't for SD, pirates can hold your ship hostage indefinitely if they wanted to. then it'll boil down to being glued to the screen for a whole day (and not eat, go to the bathroom, etc.) just to figure out if he's gonna blow up your ship and pod u when u're not looking...or give into his ransom 'cause u don't have that kind of time.

Yup - it goes both ways guys. Carebears complaining about pirates scanning down missions get no sympathy, pirates who play only for killmails get none either.
My only suggestion to the EvE devs would be to make self destruct have a timer, such that you can't hover on SD to see if you win up till the last second. |

Edited by: Count MonteCarlo on 05/11/2009 18:20:08 I'm sorry that your 20 man gank didn't have enough dps
Anyway what happened was that I jumped my navy mega into a small camp in EOA, after killing 4 ships they only had tacklers left, local went up by 20, and I was tackled long enough for them to come on grid
They had 15 BC ish and 3 (?) Oneiros, so there wasn't much I could do, so the only thing I could do was return the favor and **** on them back
I don't really care about the killmail, feel free to make your own, I did show the fit to one of your members, and if you still don't have it convo me and I'll link it
And my damage control attempt for the loss, I have 90 billion, but I won't try a ship fitted like that until dominion hits at least, that ship had seen quite a few good fights, this being one, it had nearly died 4 times beforehand ( hot dropped twice )
At least I didn't lose it to some one terrible though

I can confirm that Mr. El'Tar did absolutely the right choice here. These "lame" things in the game are not going away without threadnaughts. The more people use tactics like logoffski, capital docking games and self destructs the faster we can get rid of them. So next time when you're on the field remind yourself to do just that. Self-destructing is not fine on capitals and supercapitals. Asking to bring enough people to kill a carrier in two minutes is ridiculous. That's why we need attention on self-destructs.
And yes killmails are important as EVE is 80% EFT, 5% PVP and 15% killmails.

So wait. You say yourself Eve isn't a "battle arena", but then argue that a prize (a killmail) *must* be awarded to you when you capture a target that decides to self-destruct. What exactly are you arguing again? And where did you pull those percentages from?
If killmails is your end game, then perhaps Eve isn't for you. It seems what you're looking for is an arena-style game.

Module drop modifications should be the exact opposite, when the odds are most equal ships should drop the most modules (1v1 stuff, very small gangs, etc). In a situation that's completely hopeless and you're self destructing, module drop should be 0.
If you want the killmail for a self destruct, fake it like everyone does anyway.

Instead of killmails, use an Incident Report. Let the report show the outcome of the encounter, whether it's death, loss, SD, or escape.
It would be just as much a double-edged sword, as people who are outnumbered and outgunned who SD, or break tacklers and escape, can use their incident reports to show how lame their assailants were. It's a lot better than only getting a loss mail for losing and a killmail for killing.
And if those other "results" were tracked, we would be better care on both sides of the letter.

Hahaha, young whiners.
I remember times when the self destruct timers was 30 seconds. It became common practice that people SD¦ed when they got attacked and saw no chance to flee.
Lots of people (including me) really enjoyed this... i mean your ship is lost anyway, so knowing that all you fancy modules wil go with you, and the pirate did¦nt even gets a KM, while they smack you in local for "being lame"... was sometimes worth the price for a new ship.
So after a while the SD timer was increased to 2 minutes due to extensive pirate whining !

Then you need 15 pilots to tank the sentrys so they cry about you ganging up on them 15vs1 and tell you to grow some balls and solo pvp.
And so the cycle of the carebear continues and small gang/solo pvp dies another death

And as a result, there's no official confirmation that Bismarck did sink, it's just Allied propaganda.
Oh, and none of the ships and planes that participated in the hunt for Bismarck were rewarded, applauded or celebrated for their part in the sinking.

I've always thought that if you self destruct, you shouldn't get any insurance

This is probably the best solution to be honest, it would be a great deterrent for people self destructing Carriers/Motherships. ---

Self-destructing is not fine on capitals and supercapitals. Asking to bring enough people to kill a carrier in two minutes is ridiculous. That's why we need attention on self-destructs.
And yes killmails are important as EVE is 80% EFT, 5% PVP and 15% killmails.
This feature is not about you and what you can take, if you cant cope with an ingame mechanic that has worked in 6 years you should run along and play something simpler.

To be fair, Carriers haven't been in the game that long, they were introduced in 2006 iirc?. As the game evolves, the game mechanics need to be relooked at. Since Titans and Motherships are getting a considerible EHP boost this patch, might be worth relooking into how the self destruct mechanic works. ---

Agreed. If you wish to keep your setup a secret, or assuage losses it ought to come with a price.

This is opening up a whole new can of worms. Pushing for this will bring unintended consequences to the high sec gankers (in the form of nerfs to suicide by Concord). If we're going to analyze what deserves insurance payouts then we must include suicides with the intent to commit criminal acts in Concord space. I'm fine with this. But I'm not sure how it would sit in with the opportunistic PVP'ers.

Hmm, i don't know. Self destruct is different than a normal kill for obvious reasons. Your ship was destroyed by overloading the reactor (or w/e) not necessarily because of enemy action.

Self destruct timers should vary depending on ship size, maybe as low as 15 seconds for frigs, 5 mins for caps.
They should also do some AOE damage and yes you should get sec penalty for hitting anything you shouldn't in high sec.
No killmails though, for me all killmails would be removed, they don't promote pvp at all.

But getting your ship exploded by Concord isn't your normal kill (for obvious reasons ). And if we're going to bring real-life consequences we need to be fair with the whole of insurance and not just pick out what is convenient to me(TM). If self destructs are not to be covered by insurance it should become obvious that intentional suicides (by Concord actions) should also not be covered (re: gate and station suicide camps).
