G'day all,
I think I heard something in one of the fanfest videos of a Dev mentioning "formations" do we have any new data on this? is it going to be part of Dominion? is it skill based? anything at all would be great.
Thanking you in advance.

Formations as it was explained to me last time would be something along the lines.
Formations are group shared bonuses allowing a group of similarly roled ships to act as one unit increasing its synergy and effectiveness.
For example an Interceptor formation would requires 3 interceptor like ships the bonuses gained would be increased group speed, inteception tool effectiveness bonus, and supposivly combine thier HP and Resists values as well as looking cool when flying together.
Number of types of formations possible, bonuses, number of required ships, flight mechanics, even grouping mechanics in them are not yet fully known or finalized, thus you must continue to consult the crystal ball.
This is however probably the best non dev answer you are going to get. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 11OCT09

I hope that there are skills involved one per formation type and it will give FCs a more proper job. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 11OCT09

G'day,
I am hoping they are Charisma based, one of the reasons behind my question to to try and find the stat req's before I neural remap.

I thought the formations would be more like being able to warp your fleet at their various optimal ranges?

Edited by: Wacktopia on 16/11/2009 12:35:33 Edited by: Wacktopia on 16/11/2009 12:34:59 Yeah that rings a bell to me. I imagine the 'formation' might work in a similar, if not the same, way to joining squads in a fleet.
Clearly, squad bonuses would be cool for this type of activity. Formations would be particularly useful for more mobile ships and would hopefully improve a group of, say, tacklers from getting split up. In a big fleet it is easy to lose your wing man or squad I guess and not having to concentrate on the navigation (because your squad leader was controlling that) would leave you free to operate weapons or tackle with greater effect.
Beyond any kind of game-based bonus, there would be various meta advantages such as the ability for the FC to easily see how many interceptors, logistics or whatever are left in the fleet during an engagement as well as the aforementioned navigation improvement.

Edited by: Raquele on 16/11/2009 12:40:46 I thoguht it might have been like some of the formations you can get in the Homeworld series of games, delta's, wall's, spheres etc. Maybe say delta's for tackler, walls for RR, spheres (inwards facing) for dps concenrtration.
The way that I suspected it might work (note no data to support this theory at this point) is that a Squad Leader could pick a formation for his squad, a WC could pick a "formation class" for his wing eg small and fast, big ships or somethinig similar, and have trickle down bonuses and effects similar to the current ones but being ship class specific or fitted module specific, perhaps even having simultanious Alpha strikes initated by the FC/WC/SL from on of thier own interface (might give command ships another role).

I really hope it is this. Not a bunch of bonuses you get for putting together a fleet composition dictated by CCP,

As it was explained its role based so it wont be looking for a 'specific ship' but more like ships 'fit for that role' Interceptor formation with three abbies for example would probably not be all that useful. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 11OCT09

Just want to chip in:
Piloting your ship should be an important thing in Eve.
Being able to stay in formation by good piloting should maybe grant a bonus, and I'd be against being able to click a button, hand full motion control to a leader and just F1-F8 every fight.
I know its probably an impossible thing to code, but a visual overlay like using the tactical overlay showing where you should be relative to the group formation to get the bonus would be a better way of handling formations than handing control over to others.
Cheers.
