Ok, my mood was just ruined about the Dominion expansion.
I play EvE at work during downtime, however, the ****head operations guy took away my previously given admin rights to my computer, because, well, he is a miserable loser on a power trip. That did not matter to me much as I was able to download the smaller EvE patches but with Dominion, it's a huge problem. Basically, I cannot even start downloading the patch via the game client.
Is there anyway I can download and install this patch without requiring admin rights?
Tried posting this in the Tech corner, but no responses.
Please do not evade the profanity filter. Zymurgist

Nope.
Have the patch downloaded, can't install.
Is there any way around this?

Originally by: Roland Octavious This is hysterical, "I can't play eve at work . .waaa". . perhaps the boss feels the company computers shouldn't be used for games anymore or there something more productive you could be doing during down time then playing eve at work.
You know what's hysterical? Your assumptions and lack of reading comprehension. Do you understand the meaning of DOWNTIME during work hours?
The admin is a miserable loser on a powertrip who originally had to give me admin rights a year ago to get programs & update them because it was vital to my job, cause it's not like he was going to do the work required.
Listen, how about you and others keep the jealousy filled comments to themselves. Two of you would not be able to do my job even working double my shifts.

try to install on a different computer, then just copy files to new computer on usb ?
I play during downtime in background and passively. It's either that or search the web, read smth, stare pointlessly at the wall.
I'll try the USB trick, that might actually work if EvE does not modify .dll & registry files a lot.

Yeah, be glad for what you have.
If the guy really didn't like you, he'd watch your surfing habits and start blocking your favorite non-work sites.
Not that I've done anything like that....
No, he is just trying for a power move, he is a snake. With this shady move, he gets some leverage over myself and the night shift guy. He does not know or really care what else I do on my computer.
If he crossed that line and tried to block sites, some real hell would be raised. My boss relies way too much on me and an uncomfortable work environment due to someone that technically has no jurisdiction over me whatsoever is a real problem.

Originally by: Davie Bower Misdirected hostility, IMHO. Don't blame CCP because your workplace doesn't want you to have complete control over *their* computers.
How am I blaming CCP? I'm not mad at them.

What can I say. I'm cool like that.

Then bring a personal laptop to work and play it on that. It's somewhat unethical to be installing games on a company owned computer so that you can play them on your break.
Hehe, I actually have one of my laptops here which I take to starbucks to waste 3 hours before my training. Too much travel time to head home & back. I used to hook it up to the network here after work while I am chilling before the miserable loser had an attitude about it.

Does not work anymore. It needs d3dx9_41.dll to be installed in the /system folder. It won't run off the USB or the hard disk.
This just plain sucks.

Have you tried putting this file in the "EVE Online/bin/" directory? Also try putting it in "EVE Online/" too. IIRC, Windows automatically searches for dlls in the executable directory first, before looking for them in the directories listed by the PATH environment variable (of which C:\windows\system32 is usually the first entry of).
You da fuggin man!
Thank you very much.

Originally by: Gruumsh A'Poc Wow...I usually keep out of threads like these but to the OP...you are lacking a SERIOUS sense of reality.
I've never seen someone so self-important and ENTITLED to use company resources for personal game time. You have no understanding of work time versus personal time....and downtime while at work is still work time, using work reources, no matter how you slice it.
I am so happy uou don't work for me....in fact you'd be fired, guaranteed.
Boo hoo hoo! Jealous?
You would not last a month here, as if the only skills needed for my job were being mindless robot that is a "hard worker", my boss would have gotten someone like that for $10/hour. But the REALITY is that he had to have someone recommended for the job.
It ain't all happy party time here. I don't have an hour mandated lunch, no sick days and no real vacation. It has to be balanced & handled between myself and the night shift guy, instead of asking for permission & directions from the boss. While you were sleeping off the feast you ate last thursday night/friday morning, I was at the office working nonstop. Real responsibility & competence, not a piker who just follows orders well. I'm quite happy I don't work for you either, not like you have any position worth even a fraction of where I work and what I do.
Oh and I have no gripes if I get fired for playing EvE. That is the risk I take. I can handle that risk, part of my skillset.

Then I put it all together...you ARE the ****y, arrogant guy at my work. and you know what, I'm the miserable Admin you're complaining about.
So....for the record, you're fired. Don't come back you work tomorrow.
Second, I play EVE as well and now my corp is going to warDec you to oblivion. Get ready for the pain.
Oh really? You must be aware then that you have ZERO authority to fire me. You must also be just a bit distraught since your screwup today has cost us our profits for December and then some. Nice job! Guess who had to clean that mess up?

Apparently many EvE players cannot understand the concept of downtime in a job where it's coverage based. They keep thinking that instead of working I'm playing. It's nothing like that.
The only reason I can play EvE is because a lot of it is passive. It basically runs in background.
Lay off the Haterade!
