Ok, my mood was just ruined about the Dominion expansion.
I play EvE at work during downtime, however, the ****head operations guy took away my previously given admin rights to my computer, because, well, he is a miserable loser on a power trip. That did not matter to me much as I was able to download the smaller EvE patches but with Dominion, it's a huge problem. Basically, I cannot even start downloading the patch via the game client.
Is there anyway I can download and install this patch without requiring admin rights?

Nope.
Have the patch downloaded, can't install.
Is there any way around this?

I know how u feel.. i got a pretty quad core intel mac with a dual vidcard thingamajic at work... aka it should be able to run eve in the highest setting nps... But i'm not even gonna bother asking the paranoid b@st@rd about installing eve on it... ________________________________________________

No, if the admin has your account set to user and not admin, Windows will not allow you to install the client. You will need the administrator password for the computer.

This is hysterical, "I can't play eve at work . .waaa". . perhaps the boss feels the company computers shouldn't be used for games anymore or there something more productive you could be doing during down time then playing eve at work.

Um, how about you find a job where they give you admin rights to your box? That'd be a valid solution. Or maybe there is a reason that they don't want you to be, you know, playing games while they are paying you to work?
The short answer is no, if you are not part of the local admins group then you cannot do it. That's not even taking into consideration the numerous group policy restrictions that could be in place for the domain or specific to your box. |

Get a fully patched version on your home pc.
Copy the entire eve directory to a flash drive/dvd.
Copy/paste?

You know what's hysterical? Your assumptions and lack of reading comprehension. Do you understand the meaning of DOWNTIME during work hours?
The admin is a miserable loser on a powertrip who originally had to give me admin rights a year ago to get programs & update them because it was vital to my job, cause it's not like he was going to do the work required.
Listen, how about you and others keep the jealousy filled comments to themselves. Two of you would not be able to do my job even working double my shifts.

I play during downtime in background and passively. It's either that or search the web, read smth, stare pointlessly at the wall.
I'll try the USB trick, that might actually work if EvE does not modify .dll & registry files a lot.

Yeah, be glad for what you have.
If the guy really didn't like you, he'd watch your surfing habits and start blocking your favorite non-work sites.
Not that I've done anything like that....

Well I can say they did it to my work computer. You can see the drop in my posting on EVE search sometime early this year. Well, for some reason after 3 months out of work recovering from surgery, I come back and, bam, EVE-O Forums are no longer on the block list.

No, he is just trying for a power move, he is a snake. With this shady move, he gets some leverage over myself and the night shift guy. He does not know or really care what else I do on my computer.
If he crossed that line and tried to block sites, some real hell would be raised. My boss relies way too much on me and an uncomfortable work environment due to someone that technically has no jurisdiction over me whatsoever is a real problem.

Then bring a personal laptop to work and play it on that. It's somewhat unethical to be installing games on a company owned computer so that you can play them on your break.
OTOH, CCP should REALLY not have the patch require administrator rights unless you actually need them. IE, if the current user has read/write permission to the install directory, then don't request admin rights. If the game is installed to a folder which the user DOESN'T have write access to, THEN request admin rights. Think about it, if you didn't need admin rights to patch the game, you never would have had that nasty little boot.ini problem back then.
I am a part of the camp that hates it when developers require admin rights for things that shouldn't need them. ---------- There is always a choice. The choice might not be easy, nor simple, nor the options be what you desire - but, nevertheless, the choice is there to be made. |

Hehe, I actually have one of my laptops here which I take to starbucks to waste 3 hours before my training. Too much travel time to head home & back. I used to hook it up to the network here after work while I am chilling before the miserable loser had an attitude about it.

Aren't we just so important! Not important enough to get local admin rights though.
