Tbh I can handle the imicus but the helios is a step too far (since it used to look so good). Also the burst is not my thing, way too weird. And the obelisk, the other freighters all look a lot more like freighters.
Best lookers, random order: - Naglfar - Wolf - Ishkur - Flycatcher - Dramiel - and the rest just looks good :)

Firstly, the designers of Eve have some VERY strange ideas about spaceships. Their insistence on asymmetrical design makes for "interesting" spaceships, but sadly, I think they often overdid it and simply messed up.
The whole Gallente/Caldari asymmetry thing is just plain ugly. The designers truly messed up on many of these ships, and you often get the feeling that they ran out of ideas. Also the strange Gallente "big chin" is simply awful.
Imicus/Helios - hands down the ugliest design in Eve. No one likes it, only its mother, CCP, does. I would straighten the sideways bend of the ship's main body, and I would add the same "wing" on both sides. Atron/Ares/Taranis - I would make the right wing a little more symmetrical to the left wing. Exequror - Would it have been that hard to make the engines a little more symmetrical? Catalyst - Lol, if that were real, flying in circles would be all the rage. Velator - More lulz
And the Caldari asymmetry is just so bad, it makes me want to cry. Who the hell came up with the: Ibis - More circles in space Griffen/Kitsune - Uhm yeah Moa - woah! As bad as the Imicus. Some designer thought that bent bodies are "interesting" Scorpion - This is just sad. If the scorp weren't as terribly asymmetrical, it would be a good looking ship. Raven - Could really do with a little less asymmetry.
Some Minnie ships are also truly terrible. Such as these: Breacher/Hound - Ouch, simply ouch. Tempest - While I've grown to love the look of the 'pest, it truly does look like someone who worked at the scrapyard decided to get "creative" -- CCP's stated intentions and their actual motivations are separated by the gaping abyss of lack of credibility |

Heron. WTFVERTICAL?!
So glad they made the tech2 version cloakable.
Scorpion. Someone cut a raven in half and flipped it upside down
Raven. Thalidomide BS
Naglfar. It's a telegraph pole.
Rupture. It's a rhombus with a little erection.
Caracal. Looks vaguely broken
Amarr cruisers except the Arbitrator. Just sort of lumpy
Prophecy. It's a ball with stuff glued on to it.

Edited by: Duchess Starbuckington on 08/12/2009 13:05:48 The Moa. OH GOD THE MOA.
Also the Kitsune for two reasons: 1. The god-awful hull 2. The fact that CCP seemingly couldn't decide how they wanted to skin it? Most of it is that disgusting gold/brown, the engines and shield-looking thing are black, and some of the lights on the underside are still blue rather than yellow. Seriously one light is even half and half yellow/blue. Pure, obvious laziness on this ship.
Edit: also adding the Aeon to this. Scrolling through the motherships: "cool, sort of cool, cool, WTF"

Bad looking design - Orca. It looks like a flat biscuit tin.
Potentially the best looking ship - Maelstrom. Just takeoff the 'Wingy' bits and it would be the most mean looking, awesome ship in EvE.

Not sure what ship I think is the worst looking or dumbest looking or even worst design but one thing is for sure; Tempest and Typhoon are probably the most logically design ships in the game. If you want to talk about realism then those ships are the most realistic designs.
Since no Space ship in SciFi is realistic (Shields, transporters, scanning equipment that reaches through a whole star system, some increadable drive and so on) your point is rather mute to be talking about it not being realistic for the those two ship to be as they are since it wouldn't be realistic, in a universe that has torpedos and lasers and ship fights, for those ships to be designed like that. But that argument doesn't stand against scrutiny since because this universe has Torp's and lasers and space fights there might be somekind of ultra hard material that we don't know from our universe that makes it alright to have the ships designed like that. Or even.... Shields! You know like the once we use ingame.
tl;dr: Stop trying to compare EVE universe to your/our knowledge of spaceflight/physics since these are two totally different universes, thus possible to have totally different matierials in each, and we and our avatars exist on two totally different times so understanding of physics now and then is most certainly different.
hmm that was not really any shorter.....
tl;dr Mark 2; Stop it and play the game

Not sure what air has to do with it...
It has to do with propulsion that is offset in relation to the center of gravity.

For me the ugliest ship is by far the Bellicose, followed closely by; Osprey Moa Scorpion Tempest Dominix Hyperion
As for best looking ships, I'd have to go for; Navy Issue Armageddon (I might buy one and just randomly fly around in it) Hel Rifter

Perhaps (though the way the physics in EVE works that's questionable) but there is innertia and mass which in many ways makes symmetry even more important.
I have to side with the folks naming the Imicus it looks like peice of bent clay proped up with a toothpick.
Most the caldari boats are eyesores as well. My buddy brought his Blackbird to a mission the other night and I told him it looked more like a factory than a warship.
The galante stuff has mostly grown on me at this point but most could use a little more symetry. I've actually grown to like hte Dominix at least it's symtetrical and it's such a bad ass that it's slight shoe/turd resemblance can be overlooked. The Brutix is simply brutal looking, I has a serious I'm gonna F you up look to it.
So the Gallante stuff looks good from BC and up all the smaller ships range from odd to wtf where they thinking.
The Atron needs to settle on a wing either go with a with the long one on both sides or even the stubby. The Incursus needs to loose the refueling nozel. The catalyst needs it's otherwing.
The maulus looks like slave 1 so it's kind of hot.
Tristan, can anyone say Gundam.
As far as cruisers go the Vexor is ok it just looke like a phaser pointed backwards but at least it's more or less symetrical. The Thorax is nice though it could use a tad more symmetry. The exequor would look good if they balanced out the engine modules. The Celest is hopeless though.
I'm just thankful I don't fly Caldari I can't think of a single ship that they have that doesn't offend the eye. well I guess the Caracal isn't that bad at least it's symmetrical.
The Ammar stuff generally looks decent with some exceptions.
I actually like the look of a lot of the Minmatar stuff. Mostly symetrical and looks like the sort of thing we might actually put in space in the next couple centuries.
The ORE ships in general look pretty good mostly symmetrical and look industrial. The orca looks like a deep space hauler unlike many of the indusrial where one thinks why the hell didn't they put bigger cargo bays on them. If you think of it as a single superstructure with cargo containers attached it looks just right.
I think that the designers of EVE thought this "there is no air in space" thing and went overboard on the asymmetry. They forgot that there are many other reasons that symmetry is prefered in design. Both from an engineering/mathmatic standpoint as well as an aethetic standpoint.
Symmetry is an amost universal criteria for beauty. In nature it's a sign of health and vigor.
In space where there is no air symmetry is perhaps even more important since you have to balance your thrust to keep that mass moving in the direction you want it to go and unlike in an atmosphere you can't use control surfaces to adjust for any imbalances.

Originally by: Chiggie Well to be honest, the Moros is utterly horrible. And fly one. It looks a bit like two cow patties stacked on top of each other and welded together by enslaved Minmatar welders. Sadly, I actually thought it looked neat until I bought one, took her out for a spin and realized to my horror that what I thought was the front was really the back.
I've thought this way about a number of ships. I'm pretty sure every titan would look better flying backward... (When I first saw them on the ship chart, I thought the left side was the bow, and that they all looked great. Woo boy was I wrong.)
Originally by: Hamshoe Effing Rupture looks like a hunchback kangaroo with priapism.
Ahahaha, and here I thought I was the only one questioning the Rupture's "c*ck"pit placement.

I think the maelstrom is hands-down the most ugly ship; it looks like a flying fish proof. I think the prophecy/absolution/damnation look amazing, as does the mega. Drake is pretty good looking, but I cannot shake the feeling it's actually flying backwards.
This is not an exhaustive list. :P
