one solution to combat them is get them annoyed beyond belief
what i do personally is as soon as they start moving towards a wreck i shot the wreck and continue to do the same till they leave. this leaves the rest of the wrecks for yourself. of course u losse out on a bit of the salvage but normally they leave after 4 wrecks out of pure aggravation.
though is funny on angel extra when a new spawn comes and they all agro the salvager

Here's a hint for mission running carebears. Ninja salvagers aren't annoyed by the mission runner blowing up the wrecks. When one is destroyed we move on to the next and the next until all are destroyed.
Then we wait cloaked or bookmark the site and come back in ten minutes.
We are not annoyed. We're going to take the salvage away one way or another. It's up to you whether or not you want to keep the loot. ___________________________________ "In the land of predators, the lion does not fear the jackal." -Dexter |

Well that shouldn't work for most ninja salvagers. In fact most of the salvagers I know of laugh their butt off when the mission runner starts popping their own wrecks. Not to mention if the salvagers is properly fitted then he/shes running at 700m/s+ anyway and can sometimes grab wrecks before the runner can even lockon! In other cases ninja salvagers are their to extract tears not salvage :)

You don't really know the motivations of ninja's
Think about it... Why would any skilled player spend his time ninja salvaging (for pitiful rewards) when he can earn 40m+/hour running L4's? There are only two answers (well, three, IF the player is stupid): 1. He does it to harvest tears 2. He does it to agro the player so he can blow him up
In almost all cases, the tear harvesting is the primary objective. People blowing up their own wrecks is the BEST, since you then KNOW that they're crying inside
I've ninja'ed quite a few times when bored of L4's, and the objective has always been the same: Raging players either sending me fan-mail or blowing their lid in local.

You assume all "ninja salvagers" are skilled players. They could be relatively low-SP characters, and this simply earns them more isk/hr than Lv2 or Lv3 missions.

You need a Maurauder to make 40 mill / hour from missions. And a lot of other stuff too. Someone who make that much is griefing, not salvaging.
Lets get real instead:
Someone who can *just* afford a salvaging destroyer can make much more ISK from ninja salvaging than from e.g. missioning. If they had 20 million SP and a maurauder they'd be doing missions instead. Shooting wrecks won't upset these players much. They can wait, or find another mission to salvage from.
Some people do stuff just to annoy other players. They don't actually care of they get the stuff or if the mission runner shoots the wrecks. The goal is for the mission runner to become upset and to show it.
In both cases, you "win" by staying calm, and by wasting more of their time than they waste of yours.
Leave/Return as though you're trying to get the rats to attack the "ninja". This will encourage them to stay 10 or 15 minutes next time around. Then go elsewhere and do another mission. Rinse and repeat. You can drop in again for 1 minute in between rooms in your other mission, to encourage them to stay even longer.

I assume nothing.... This is from personal observation of the players who've entered 'my' mission space.
Either they're 'old' players, or they're obvious alts made for that purpose (look at corp history and standings to determine this). I've convo'ed quite a few of them too, and most admit they're just trying to grief....

Confirming I just do it to annoy mission runners. I make plenty of money on the market, this is what I do when I feel like flying an internet spaceship as opposed to updating orders from a spreadsheet.

What an amazing display of sad people who find "harvesting tears" fun. I bet you are a real fun person in real life. I would rather walk away from wrecks and for that fact anybody who sees "harvesting tears" as fun thing to do either in a game or life. Sad .................

Originally by: Laird Penguin If you're getting ninja salvaged, grin and bear it and if it continues move systems.
Actually, the best you can do is to convo the guy and in a nice way say that as you're not salvaging/looting anyway, he's welcome to do so. Real salvagers will thank you, and griefers will most likely leave.
Originally by: Laird Penguin The tears comments are actually hiding mental insecurity, by the way.

Actually, it is just a manifestation of the two different main types of EVE players.
One group sees EVE as a competition against others, and in this case the biggest 'win' you can get is when you can see your opponent REALISE he's beaten, and that you've beaten him so thoroughly that you get an emotional response, thus the high value of tears, local-rage or fan-mail. The other group sees EVE as a single-player game with a chat-room.
However, sadly for the second group, EVE is designed from the ground up as a competitive game, thus they endlessly cry on the forum as competition enters what they thought was their little single-player universe
(needless to say, I see EVE as it is designed, implemented and intended; a competitve game)

I don't want to disagree with any "anti-griefer" comments, but ...
EvE allows activities which are not game-legal in *other* games, so it attracts and keeps players who enjoy interfering with other players activities.
In EvE, every single niche for "fun-vampires" is filled to overflowing. There are always more of "them" than constructive players. CCP might close some of the silliest niches (supporting suicide gankers via insurance payouts for Concord kills for example), but there will still be a wide range of opportunities for parasites. In particular, "ninja salvaging" seems likely to stay game-legal forever.
They *will* be there. The solution isn't to call them losers. They know that already, and/or they're in denial. The solution is to deny them what they want, and waste their time in the process.
They don't want ISK, they want you to become annoyed. They want to waste a lot of your time in exchange for a little of theirs. So: Stay calm. Don't talk to them (why bother? they're bored, they're boring, they're not gamers). Figure out ways to efficiently waste *their* time. Figure out ways to have fun at *their* expense. Always have a fallback (another activity, another nearby mission started or ready to go, a jumpclone in a similar place many systems distant).
@Kerfira: Winning and humuliating your oppoment aren't the same thing. Your conflating the two proves Laird Penguin's point.

You know what? I think the main isssue here is the (incorrect) naming of them. They should be ranamed to "Freelance space trash collectors". If you percieve them for what they really are, you'll realize something: they're actually doing you a favor by collecting your space trash.
That's why I let them loot and salvage all they want. Problem is, when they realize I'm actually happy about them cleaning up my space trash, they get bored and leave
So yeah, that sucks. But oh well, maybye we should implement a training program for them that's also designed to teach them some proper work ethics.

This. I can't help but lol at the mission carebears who act as if the wrecks belonged to them. Even though the loot for some reason does.
PS: Salvaging lower-level missions is funnier, because you'll often get noobs who think they get to shoot at you if you salvage the wrecks. I hardly ever bother salvaging L4s anymore, they're nothing but macros/people who can't be bothered to get annoyed. L2-3s, on the other hand, provide plenty of lulz and carebear tears, even if they take a little longer to scan out because the system isn't filled by over 9000 marauders.

It is if the game is to humiliate the other person.... Also, you only know you're winning if the other guy DOES get visibly upset. That's the only way you know whether the other guy has accepted the game round you're offering....
You are, just as the other guy, trying to make something bothering you deep down in your carebear soul (that EVE is not designed or even intended to as the game you want it to be) go away by retorting to pre-school grade namecalling (though with slightly fancier words) THAT is even more infantile than anything you accuse ninja's of...
EVE IS a PvP game (though you and people like you hate that aspect). Just learn to live with it....
Accusing people of 'Mental Insecurity' because of their PvP actions in a PvP spaceship game is pretty pathetic anyway. It could be argued it hints at Mental Insecurity in the accuser(s).

1 spend two minutes probing out a mission runner (or two) using high-strength probes within a 1au radius; get 2+ warpable results GO TO 2 2 enter mission using the ninja salvage alt, zip around at 1km/s+, salvage and loot wrecks IF mission runner shoots wrecks GO TO 3 IF mission runner shoots salvaging ship GO TO 4 3 continue moving between wrecks, occasionally grabbing some loot/salvage before the owner can pop the wreck (works particularly well against missile users), make sure the entire mission gets cleaned up IF another probing result is available GO TO 2 IF you don't have any other results probed out GO TO 1 4 go fetch pew pew ship and have a friend come to finish cleaning up the wrecks
Ninja salvagers always win, unless their pewpew ship gets popped. Mission runners never win, because either way, they're not getting their loot/salvage (or at least the latter). It's really not that hard a concept to understand. ---

The funniest part is when you run for a nice above-average quality L4 agent in hisec and never ever see a ninja, cos they're too lazy to waste their time in a backwater where there isn't 100+ in local 23/7 for them to scan down and try to annoy. Those are the best tears, the tears of the ninjas who know they are a flea harassing an elephant.

Most people don't get any pleasure from upsetting someone else. Such people can't understand why griefers find it entertaining to annoy other players and waste their time.

Ninja Salvagers are Teh LEET.
I prefer the chat option, to tell them that you are sweeping through the mission for standings and that they can have your wrecks. If they are genuine salvagers, they will thank you, if they are not, they will either A) go away bored or B) Try to grief you more by targetting your ship or ramming.
The more of B) the bigger the Lols for me. It's good to know that while you are advancing in Eve, these "tear harvesters" are wasting their time.
