This came up in a conversation with others and I feel very curious as to why. I searched wallet and account in Icelandic and they do not start with Z apparently... Can anyone give me an answer?

It's the official symbol for InterStellar Kredits, as determined by convention of CONCORD, of course.
Beyond that, it's just a symbol that is not used by any real world currency, so it works as well as anything else.

It isn't. All of our monetary transfers are done electronically, so we never actually handle solid money (unless you own the item "A lot of Cash" or something like that). I wish I owned that item. It's second only to the thing that does stuff. Clear Skies Day of Darkness |

How do you explain $ for dollars then? They don't start with S either. |

Quite a few possible explanations if you search, unit of silver, shortened form of U.S., derived from the Spanish coat of arms, and so the list goes on. ------------------------------------------------ You either need a punch up the throat or a good shag.
Nobody round here is offering the second one therefore your choices are limited! |

I heard that the dollar sign, "$", was originally a "U" and an "S" overlaid. Then people got lazy and started dropping parts of it. US, as in United States.

The font on this forum only has a single bar through the S in $$, but when I write by hand I always put two bars out of habit. I assume that the $ being U/S overlaid is accurate.

Actually most of the sources I have found indicate that the symbol (and the word dollar itself) both predate the existence of the United States as a nation.
Most scholarly sources seem to think that the symbol is a bastardized version of the original symbol for the peso, which was a p with a super-scripted s, but alas, no one seems to have a definitive answer. --Vel

One of my favourite legends on this subject is that it was once 8 (as in peices of...) As the direction of a pen stroke was important it was often entered in ledgers as if writing an "S" and then striking through it with a "/" (The pen moving down the page at all times). Over the years the slash became more and more vertical until the familiar symbol became normal. The symbol of course predates the United States and therefore the legend of the overlaid "U" and "S" is rather far fetched.
The "Z" with the Horizontal Bar echoes the Ñ of the Yen and I suspect that it's a nod towards the William Gibson tradition, cultural crossover and gritty darkness dominated by the Japancorps. --

Back in the days you actually were able to pull ISKies from your wallet into your hangar, as an item. So it seems that we capsuleers only recently (like 5 years ago?) switched from partially solid money to all-out electronic ISKies ^^
