Edited by: Alun Hughes on 22/01/2010 02:54:28 In computing, failover is the capability to switch over automatically to a redundant or standby computer server, system, or network upon the failure or abnormal termination of the previously active application,[1] server, system, or network. Failover happens without human intervention and generally without warning, unlike switchover
But In CCP Terminology
In CCP, failover is the incapability to switch over automatically to a redundant or standby computer server, system, or Hamsters upon the failure or abnormal termination of the previously active application,,[1!!!!!!!!zomg1] server, system, or Hamsters. Failover happens without human intervention and generally without warning or even more Generrally while your trying to jump through a gate or kill a tackle somthing, unlike switchover were tuxford reboots it. |

why does everyone blame the hamster(s)? It's not their fault. |

I Think this Failover happened due to the CCP Tuxford Nerf. Incompatible Code realigning bad binery with a side of karma. The server is proving it doesn't need his help to shutdown at random.

It most certainly IS the hamsters fault. They quit running in the wheel. Of course, it was known they were going to quit running, so they were preemptively fed to the anaconda as punishment. Now we have to wait for new hamsters that won't need to be fed to the anaconda for failing to run in the wheel, (while being eaten.) |

True, but it's the price you pay when for having "Codename: Kids Next Door" as your technology vendor.
OTOH, hamster power makes more sense than most of Eve's physics.

Does the Eve database have a standby database to failover to? It is not like a game of internet spaceships is in any way critical and having a standby database would seem like a unnecessary expense.

Failover is great if you have a small cloud or cluster in a single virtual location.
In eve's case using fail over is much more in depth, in eve's case it is defently not cost feasible to be able to put such a system in place. I don't think people understand what kind of stuff goes into eves server clusters... they use the singular word server to describe a large cluster of hardware that consumes a **** ton of power and money just to keep going.
So you want them to double their cost just because a coder might have forgot to handle an exception correctly... naa.... no thanks I like to keep my account only cost 15 a month...
Please stop jumping on the CCP fail wagon like other morons, if you think you can do better or if your armchair ITness even has half the worth as the intern at CCP then please by all means do better. |

It already launched the nukes...and no-one noticed because it all happened in 0.0 Fortunately, while self-aware, it thinks the game is reality. |

Im sorry I had no intent to attack you, its just that these dudes really do work their asses off to push out a good game for us, and as someone in the development industry (I dont do an mmo but my product is also very network intensive), its really does suck as a dev to have something like this happen, and then have to hear it from work and then the community.
Personally, I think it was the mass launch of fighter bombers that caused the server to crash, blame the people with billions of isk its all their fault.. they should give us some isk lol |

The supercarriers have become self-aware.
Every server hamster is being rounded up by the enslaved lesser-carriers and are herded into a feeding pit for the fighter-bombers. The old fighters stand guard around their pit, replaced by the newer fighter-bombers.
After the hamsters are devoured, the fighter-bombers return to their respective supercarriers as they begin the slow and painful, but merciless overtaking of all of Earth, beginning with the CCP Headquarters.
It's been nice knowing all of yall, but im afraid our future now lays inside the incorporated hulls of the super-carriers, where we will watch the destruction of our homeworld and the end of humanity. |

While the titan may be able to damage the supercarrier, the combined wrath of all the server hamster fed fighter-bombers will be no match for any tank the titan can hope to put up. Regrettably, we are all doomed. |
