just found this out
the relevant part from the link:
Originally by: link
Physically Simulated Clothing in Eve Incarna Using NVIDIA APEX Speaker: Vigfus Omarsson (Lead Technical Artist, CCP), Snorri Sturluson (Senior Software Engineer, CCP), Monier Maher (APEX Product Manager, NVIDIA) Date/Time: Thursday (March 11, 2010) 1:30pm ù 2:30pm Track: Visual Arts Experience Level: All In this session, we will demonstrate how CCP added physically simulated clothing to their Eve Incarna characters using NVIDIA's APEX Clothing. We will demonstrate, step by step, the full authoring pipeline, from DCC tools to final integration into the game engine. This session introduces the full NVIDIA APEX suite of artist friendly tools and runtime libraries (Clothing, Destruction, Particles, Turbulence & Vegetation), which significantly speed up creation and inclusion of scalable, dynamic content without a large engineering effort.
didn't think much of it but then I was browsing some other site which said Nvidia is offering a new physics engine for which you will require an Nvidia card, and it hit me that this might be it.
probably just a false alarm, but can anyone with more knowledge on the matter enlighten us?
off topic: can we get a stream of that presentation? or at least a video?

I don't have more knowledge on the subject, but do you REALLY think that CCP would, in one patch, make it so any person with an ATI/Older nVidia card couldn't play eve?

Yeah, sure, they've already done that with the classic drop, the linux drop, various graphics engine updates that made the game virtually unplayable on older graphics cards... I wouldn't put it past them to do this as well.

Common now, people only use Linux because they are being difficult "TAKE THAT MICRO$OFT!" and the classic client dated back to the 90's.

Just think how it works with PhysX enabled games right now, if you don't have an nVidia card you simply don't get the extra effects.

It's probably just a talk on how they used a particular API to get improved acceleration for this.
Still, nice find - it shows (in my mind anyway) that Incarna is actually being worked on and isn't vapourware :)

Judging by the info on the APEX Clothing found here if you don't have a GPU that supports the APEX Simulation it will resort to using your CPU to do the job.
- Cross-platform support (PC, PC+GPU, PS3, Xbox360, and Wii)
This will result in a performance hit for PCs with ATI cards but you will get the same effects.
The HeroEngine uses this technology.

cool thanks!
hope its not to much of a performance hit so I can still use my ati card. but seeing how incarna is already graphically pretty intense my ati might not be able to handle it

Great time to multithread the graphics engine then. And while your there native AA and AF without me having to **** about with forcing it through drivers.

CCP abandoned the idea of incarna being completely optional. there are things that you will now only be able to do in incarna

Don't be stupid. There are lots of good reaons for using Linux, i.e. you're studying information technology and the university courses are all based on *nix. Or maybe you just want or need a system that you can actually control. That said, I prefer Windows for games, too and don't even have a Linux partition at the moment.
Originally by: Ak'athra J'ador will you need an Nvidia card for incarna?
I wouldn't worry to much about that. CCP will probably find a way to delay Incarna until all matter in this universe has decayed.

1. people whine and moan about needing shader model 2.0 to play EVE.
2. shader model 2.0 is OLDER THAN EVE
3. update your effin graphics cards you lazy cheap bastards.
4. there is no 4.
5. "wah i have a 30yr old 500lb laptop, i can't afford a new one."
6. unsub for a few months and build a cheap computer that is more than capable of running eve
7. i really couldn't think of a 7 either
8. i like that ccp supports such old ass graphics cards, i really do. but when they finally update, whining about it is just ******ed.
9. WIS is a useless feature, CCP, delete it and move on. this is internet spaceships, not internet goldshire inn in space (any nonWOW players not understanding the reference... think furries cybering in dark corners)
10. i wish you could meet my girlfriend, my girlfriend who lives in Canada ♥

Have a look through the fanfest presentations from '09 (and earlier ones too, but it was far more apparent this autumn), and you'll notice something: no, this is not internet spaceships. This is the capsuleer part of New Eden, and what CCP is doing is building New Eden, not EVE.
Hence Dust 514. Hence the name for the common-dataset interface (New Eden, natch). Hence planetary interactions. Hence Incarna. Hence just about anything they've ever mentioned, apart from WoD. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I use AMD and ATI cause Intel« and nVidia« are evil.
But I would swap to using nVidia« if CCP were to start using nVidia« PhysX« technology. So that a Shuttle gets crumpled when it tries to ram a Dreadnaught.

I think it's more likely that you'll need Incarna for your NVidia card.

For what it's worth, Eve is still perfectly playable on most GNU/Linux software distributions through wine. And I'm not being "difficult", I'd very much like to switch to another, "easier" operating system. Can you name another one that's Free (as in Freedom), doesn't infringe on your privacy and Software Freedoms, and plays Eve at least as reliably as GNU/Linux? No? Thought so. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

Yay more vendor tie in's, marketing money and 'technology partners', just what the consumer always wanted... oh wait.
The amount of 3rd party components going into this "Incarna" crap is quite amazing, I'm sure in the future you will be very happy with all that well spent cashahahah wait hahahaa

wow, I read a little about that engine, did you see what it can do? why not just use that for incarna?
I guess the thing must cost a fortune, quite amazing though...

What's that even supposed to mean, calling me difficult? I suppose you're going to call me pretentious for taking the bus instead of owning a car too? Or laugh at me for cooking dinner instead of microwaving a pop tart?
It makes no sense.

Actually, this was always intended to be a universe in a bottle. Not spaceships in a bottle. It was just impossible to implement everything at once. Should read the eary dev chats...
Also: For a lot of people this is excel in space. I bet there a some active players who haven't left their Caldari Navy Assembly Plant for the last couple of years...
