So, i've flown plenty o' ships with damage control units and i've been playing for somewhere between 8 months and a year.
My past in MMOs and gaming in general involved a fair bit of serious playing, mathematics, spreadsheet, the whole "min-maxing" thing... Not generally a clueless player of games.
Anyway, While undocking today, I accidentally clicked on my damage control II on a newly fitted cruiser. Much to my surprise, it activated the unit!
Apparently all this time, I thought damage controls were passive units, and they did absolutely nothing for any of the dozens of ships I've had them on all this time. I've died probably when I haven't needed to and wasted a lot of ISK on these units that were I guess just taking up space.
Terribly embarrassing, but i'm glad I figured it out so I can laugh at myself now and move on to slightly greater success.
The end.
Anyone else have similar stories from their early days or whatever?

You should have used the "hide passive modules"-option in HUD. That's how i figured out that damage control is an active module ------ Make Lowsec useful! Vote in the CSM-Forum! |

Using 'hide passive modules' is a nice way to end up flying with offlined modules, which have a tendency to end up in that state after clone jumps, etc, with tight fits.

This. If it shows up on my HUD, it's active.
I'm assuming you don't know how to do this--click the little triangle to the bottom left of your main HUD with your capacitor and speedometer. Click 'hide passive modules'.

My story is that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I started off in eve. I didn't realise how important skill training was and thus I spent my first month in eve flying around in first a slasher and then a rifter ratting in hisec belts wondering how on earth other people were flying battleships and other shiny stuff and how they could afford them. I didn't do any missions because, in my very first non-training mission, I got the level 1 break their will mission and got my noob ship killed by the very first npc (angel highjacker lol). That traumatised me enough to think that all missions were hard no matter what you flew. Then, after that first month I started doing missions again but for any agent who would speak to me, meaning that my standings with the various npc corps hardly rose at all.
It was only after I joined my first corp that I started realising what eve is all about.

Did you know you can move the locked target pictograms around anywhere on the screen ? It's just that the "anchor" is usually hidden behind the overview ?
Also, did you know you can right-click the market graph and remove any individual displayed elements on it ?
How about the fact you're invulnerable for 30 seconds after you enter a grid, but only if you don't give any commands whatsoever to your ship ? Not just for undocking and jumping, but warping inside a system too.
Or how about the fact that when your ship is at a perfect standstill, you are considered aligned to all possible points in space, regardless of the direction your ship is "visually facing" ?
Maybe you also didn't know that (for a while now) holding down CTRL freezes your overview, then forces a reset when you release it (so it also clears up any "ghost" items you had on it for any reason).
And last but not least, even if repeatedly mentioned here and there, the fact that an offline module or an EMPTY module slot do exactly the same for rack overheating purposes, except that keeping the rack empty is cheaper since you never have to repair modules that don't exist.
All of the above took me way longer to find out than I would have considered normal for myself, and some I actually forgot for a while then rediscovered them much later.

When I first started out I was one of those people that unlocked Battleships way too soon. In particular I unlocked Gallente BS because I thought the Megathron looked cool. In fact that ship is the reason I went Gallente lol. Anyways a corp mate (also a noob at the time) was can flipped by a Merlin and took the bait. I was using my mega strictly to do high sec mining, but I had a junk fit available that I used to do missions with. I decided I was going to help out my buddy so I double checked my fit and headed towards my friends wreck and started targeting the merlin.
First mistake I made was taking a BS to kill a frigate. Second mistake was to have such a lame fit and skills. I think I had less than 40 K effective HP and my dps was even more pathetic I'm sure. But that's not even the really embarrassing part. It took forever to kill his shields but I was winning. The turning point in the fight was when I ran out of ammo. For 15 minutes I sat there like the ****ing dead lice was falling off of my head because I had nothing to hit him with.
You want to know why I ran out of ammo? It wasn't because I used a lot or because I forgot the ammo. I deliberately brought only enough to load my guns because I was unaware you could re-load in space. That is why I'm the biggest dork to ever play the game. A single merlin popped my mega. I believe the that was my second ship loss.
My first one was even funnier, although a bit less stupid. I joined faction warfare without knowing what it was, I can thank CCP for giving out the free pass to faction warfare with the Apocrypha retail box. I was mining with my exequror and decided to venture out of my beginner 1.0 system and do some exploring. I was practically instapopped the second I entered a Caldari system.

In 0.0 I once lost a Stealth Bomber to a 2-3 day old character, so let that be a lesson to new players that pvp is always possible when your new. ____________________________________________ When going to a party with wine, women, and song. Always ascertain the vintage of the first two. |

double clicking items in your overview will either make you approach them or if your within 2500m, double clicking will open them (cans, wrecks, structures)

Playing on and off for 7+ years now.. things i learned the hard way.
You can left click on system name in top left corner u can drag it down to a chat box and auto link it
You can left click any player name in local fleet or whatever and drag it to a chat and auto link it.
You can type in the first three letters of any object in eve LEFT click and highlight just those three letters then right click and many options come up.
You can type in a persons name corp etc with the above.
Ever been talking in multiple chat rooms and not paying attention.. Tab to wrong channel see a neutral in chat and warp the whole fleet off.. While in the real local nobody is their but you.
DID not know you could double left click 2500 meter deal or that double click would open it ( shesh)
Ever put a shield amplifier on thinking it was a shield booster.. and cussing and spending an hour trying to figure out why your tank sucks..

This thread should be stickied. Possibly in EVE New Citizens Q&A. Seriously, especially considering how clunky the interface (is)seems. A lot of frustration for new players (even veterans) could be alleviated with some of the things mentioned in this thread. Things that make you headdesk when you learn about them, but that there is no real way to learn them without dumb luck / someone telling you.

Don't feel bad. Cause even if you knew how tracking worked 100% a year ago, it all works completely different now.
Oh for the good old days when tracking was based off of speed instead of signature radius, when the 5% per level speed bonus on my vagabond actually meant something!

Here is a great one.
Your orbit is not limited.
Once you click on a ship and at the top right of your screen, you get those buttons with approach, orbit, keep at range... etc.
You can right click orbit and keep at range -> Then enter a number from 500m-150km for orbit, and 0-150 for keep at range.
Now you have a new default.

It's a tiny animated rotating-stylized-flowery thingy on the upper-left-most part of the "space" area of the screen, barely visible at higher resolutions (I think it's something like 12x12 pixels, or very close to that), but at least it has a "pop-up" when you hover over its general area with your mouse cursor. I'v been playing for about 6 months, give or take, and found some good tips here. thx all.
Here are a few tips for manipulating items in inventoy that I'v learned since playing, can make moving stuff around much easier.
Click an item, scroll down and while holding shift click another item, will select every thing between the two.
Holding ctrl will select only the items you click on.
And i was glad when i learned this one, click the first item and hit ctrl A, that will select every item in the container or bay.
last, station containers are cheap inventory controll, at least till ccp comes up with a workable solutioon.

It was a few months into the game before I realized that shift-drag will split stacks. I was creating market orders and then canceling them to split stacks.
I think it was about two or three years before I learned about the ewar drone skill adding 3km to ALL drone ranges.
I was shield tanking my gallente frigates and destroyer in the beginning. It really annoyed me that the catalyst only had two mids because I was fitting a shield booster. So I usually didn't have an afterburner fit and would take forever to fly through the missions.
I had a friend who was pulling missions in a system neighboring low sec. He kept getting sent into the low sec system for missions but didn't have any trouble for like a week. Then one day four flashy pirates in battleships warped into his mission and blew up his caracal. He thought they were NPCs at first. He was visibly upset at losing his caracal, it was very traumatic. This was about 4 years ago.
Also about four years ago I was ratting in low sec at one point and decided it was ok to go AFK in the belt while going to the bathroom. I came back to find a megathron tackling my thorax and I was almost dead. Then the guy in the mega apologized because he had mistaken me for a local pirate he was hunting and gave me like 10 million isk for my trouble. It was a ton of isk to me at the time. ----------------------------------------------------

What I did: When I learned of the theft that occurred in ebank by ricdic, I believed their management at the time that all would be well, and left over 4B isk in my savings account.

Originally by: Bomberlocks My story is that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I started off in eve.
If that is what you think Eve is about, then lol.
I think you misread my post. I mean that was when I started learning from corpies what pvp was, what tanking meant, skills, how losec and nullsec worked, how fitting a point is a good idea if you don't want to watch that target warp off, how to avoid a podding etc.
Before then I knew absolutely nothing.
Now, with 23 million SP and one and a half years into the game I know that I still know nothing, but the knowledge that I know nothing sometimes saves me from making too many avoidable mistakes.
The tip about how to avoid being podded was one of the best ones (when you're in deep structure and going down fast, select an overview planet etc and start spamming the warp button. much faster than selecting an object, right clicking and selecting warp to).

I played for about 3-4 months before finding out that you could group guns (I was in a BC at the time, mashing F1-F7 every time I want to kill something was annoying).
Only this week I found out that when you're not moving, you have no mass and no inertia, so you can move in any direction instantaneously. I used to orbit gates at 500-1500m, and I always wondered why other pilots beat me to the decloak/point/whatever, even when I was closer and/or slightly faster.
I didn't know that you could double click an item in the overview to approach or open.

Right clicking a gate on overview and selecting "Add as First Waypoint" sets destination to that system allowing you to hit warp then click Autopilot then do whatever you need to do in-game while you WTZ then autopilot to the next system.

Day later I find out they're "Item Exchanges", and you can retreive them instantly upon payment.

When you're invulnerable like this, you cannot be bumped. Nor can you be targetted or affected by smartbombs or other area effects.
Also, someone mentioned standing still and having no mass or inertia. This is false, you just don't have to overcome any inertia in the wrong direction if you're holding still.
"Passive aligning" is a myth, it doesn't matter what direction your ship model points. If you're holding still, you'll align and warp in any direction equally fast.
However, if you're holding still, its much easier to track you, and any other ship standing still will have perfect tracking on you, and fragile frigates will go boom even to battleship-sized guns. That's why small ships generally orbit a gate.

You set the distances to 9999999999 and click set active scanner. This shows you all non cloaked ships in a system. You can also narrow the direction in which you scan.
Lets say 10 Degrees. You will scan in a ten degree point from the front of your ship. It takes awhile to get a hang of it. The weird thing is your scan is based on which way your screen is facing. You can press alt and use the little square that represents your self as a quasi targeting system.
It is difficult to explain but it works. Ask someone in your corp for training.

Wrong, it only reaches to about 14 AU, anything outside that, and you need to use probes. _____ ^ That is a sig line. It should be there without me having to put one in. |

I should of put that it was limited in distance but I can never remeber the max. So I always put 99999999 just to make sure its maxed.

HOW?!?!?!!?!?!?!
Open the fitting screen, make sure you don't have ammo loaded, click and drag the guns/launchers onto each other. Just like in space.
Are you for serious?! omg /facepalm. Almost a year and a half of playing and I never knew you could group in station....ffs. -.-" Thanks for the info lol --------------

I still laugh when I think of this embarassing noob moment of "glory"
I had just gotten my first shiny Thorax. I fitted it with very expenive weapons that I really couldn't afford but wanted the extra damage. I was just ou flying it around when someone asked for help trying their new shielding system. I was only too happy to oblige. Without realizing there was a method to this in hi sec I locked and unloaded on the ship. First volley brought the explosive response of Concord. End of my shiny new Thorax fully equipped.
Bad enuff right? Wrong, I thought the other ship was responsible for the obliteration and thought for a week I had been duped by a ****. I of course said every bad thing I could think of about the offending party without realizing it was totally my fault!

Now I have been playing for awhile (long enough to know better) and fly Capitals. I remember reading the Dev Blog where they introduced fuel bays for carriers but it didn't register. Few months later I was hopping into 0.0, so I planned my route and all that and undocked, mate lit the cyno and I tried to jump...well it wouldn't, not enough fuel to jump with. I quickly checked Dotlan and it said I was within range. So I docked up and unfit a CPR (Chimera FTW) and fit a Cargo Expander moved the fuel from my corp hanger into my cargo and jumped. I didn't think anything of it at the time.
2 days later I told my mate who lit the cyno why I took so long to jump and why I had a cargo expander on and he proceeded to remind me about the fuel bay (then ****ed himself laughing on vent). We had been using the carrier as a mobile base in a 0.0 system in NPC space, so I jumped to the nearest station and refit my carrier and put all my fuel in the fuel bay.
That wasn't early days it was about a month ago.
I remember buying my first frigate (1 week in). I didn't check where the ship was (didn't really understand the difference between lowsec/0.0/empire), just bought the cheapest on market, then set my autopilot and went. Was 3 jumps into lowsec. Lost it on the way out...took me a week mining in an Ibis to buy that thing, Merlins FTL.

When HICs first came out i was going around in low sec when i came upon a gate camp. It looked like the hic had a bubble out. I did not know that hics could not bubble empire, i saw the bubble graphics and just assumed i was jammed, so i slow boated it back to the gate and almost made it, but died

My first visit to lowsec - A corpmate had jumped through a few minutes earlier and reported that the system was all clear. I jump in in my Drake to find a red flashy Raven sat off the gate. I tell my ship to warp to the next gate and cross my fingers, but before I finish aligning the Raven acquires a target lock, warp scrambles me, and opens up with its torpedoes. Left with no other choice, I turn around and begin slowboating back to the gate to hisec. And of course, I wasn't going to lose my ship without putting up a fight, so I return fire. Much to my suprise, I reach the gate with a reasonable amount of shield left, so I'm feeling fairly happy as I click to jump through. Message box pops up: "Due to recent acts of aggression..." Huh. So I turn off my launchers and sit there, trying to jump through, watching my shields then armour then structure disappear. Pop goes my Drake, through the gate goes my pod.
Lesson learned - if you think you have any chance of reaching the gate, don't shoot back.

I have learned numerous little tricks from reading this! I never knew you could move the interface or target icons. Double clicking overview to open containers..
Here's my contribution to the list..
I was 4 mounths in before I figured out Ctrl R reloads your guns and launchers
11 months in, before I figured out if you right click on your weapons you can change ammo types on the fly, rather than dragging the current ammo to cargo and new ammo to guns
Keep the embarassing moments / types for noobs post coming!

The next couple months were spent doing nothing but mining, since that was all I knew how to do in the game. Good times.

Edited by: Zofe Stormcaller on 26/02/2010 11:13:57 Just to clarify, dscan seems to work from the angle your camera is not the angle your ship points at. I have been aligned while using it to keep tabs on what ships are in a particular station camp while in the next grid using the 30 degree scan in a tech 1 frig.
I was recently reminded to make sure I check local when resupplying myself with PVP stuff during the rare occasions I go back to empire through a wormhole when we have a wardec running...

When I first started playing way back when...
I got a hold of an "Invulnerability Shield". I was so happy, thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Why? Because I thought it made you, "Invulnerable". I got my shiny new, extremely expensive (early 2003 during the beta) Kestrel and put on my Invuln shield. Went to a belt and got my ass handed to me. I had the shield activate, I couldn't figure it out.
I also thought smartbombs were one-use items. I could not, for the life of me figure out why people liked them so much, they were freaking EXPENSIVE, Until someone in my corp mentioned they made a crap-ton of isk overnight by smartbombing a Planet Rat spawn. I spent many a night instead... mining in a Merlin overnight. (Hey.. Industrials were Corporate level assets at this point :P)

When i first started out, ratting in low sec in a thrasher(1st mistake). Was lucky and didn't get found/caught. Killed some really tough rats, but didn't even know what faction rats/loot was(2nd mistake). Got a low-grade angel implant (+2) which was better than my +1's so i plugged it in (3rd mistake). And finally destroying it so i could plug in a normal +3(4th mistake).
Took me about a year to even realize the mistakes I had made... |

My first task in Eve was to undock from Chaven and travel to Zaimeth to join a friends corp and be equipped.
Although it's only 6 or 7 jumps, I had all sorts of problems. The main one: system gates didn't show on my overview. It took almost an hour of tinkering before I realised I could set destination by using the map.
Then I proceeded to whirl the ship view around, until I spotted a yellow gate, which i'd warp to by right-clicking.
After flying like this for a good day or so i'd started to memorise my way around the area and started using the gate/system/station options on the top left to get around.
It wasn't until my friend came around 6 months later and took a good look at my overview that I started navigating like a normal person.
