Actually everyone is doing rather well this year. Kil2 is solid as usual and even the new faces like laz are are doing great with commenting on whats happening and theory crafting. My real only complaint is MB3, the amount of ums, yeahs, ehs.... is similar to a barbie doll from california, but I know this is difficult to do am hoping the nerves die down in the upcoming weeks.
Just dont make jokes, dont try to be cute, just commentate on the event at hand. Thats all we want and gj guys. |

We need more 'in depth' talk. I'm referring to the match of THE SPACE P0LICE where one tengu died in almost full shield to 3 Taloses. The commentators were amazed which is plain weird if you spend a little time in pvp you would know that taloses can ripp through ships (like most T3 bcs) if their positon is set up well. It woul be nice if they would talk more about how good their engagement is. Are they in a good/bad position? Is their angle good? Changing ammo types for ranges? Is their speed favoring them? Why are they not moving but rather shooting stationary?
Also the camera view is bad often times. Its zoomed in on one ship, and literaly just on one ship. We need to see whats happening on the field, so zoom out more and show us the bigger picture.
When any commentators give opinions about their 'favorite ships' tell us more why and how its a great ship instead of the 'its so good. It can tank so much. The damage is so great'.
I do not blame the commentators for their current performance. There is few practice material out there. In games such as starcraft you can record and playback all matches thus the commentating level is much higher in that game (day9 is a well known commentator explaining progamers tactics). However in Eve there is no recording of your battles so its hard to become good at it with no way of praticing it.
But I think the commentators can improve alot by going through a few simple steps:
1. What are the teams flying (what are the roles of each ship) 2. What would be the best primary and/or secondary targets? (or rather what are the different approaches to handle the team's compositions) 3. Check their high slots (gun types) 4. Check their velocity (nano, mwd, ab, armor buffer tank) 5. Check their range (strategy (sniper/kite or brawl) 6. Check angular velocity (guns) or velocity (missiles) (how hard can they hit from their current position) |

I think the commentators are doing a fine job for what they are doing.
Eve isn't sc2. You can't just look at a build-order and automatically know what the player is going to do. This is the AT and people will field ecm rifters and armor sleipnirs. Perhaps it would be cool if the commentators could get full fittings before a match so they could better prepare their commentary, but this being eve I doubt people would trust it/want it.
I also would reiterate on what others have said and request more tactical camera footage of the battle instead of extreme closeups of wrecks/frigates/drones. I mean sure, some eye-candy now and then is appreciated, but now it's like 95% eye-candy 5% tactical shots of positions. |

A ship flying at 1km/s or 2km/s already tells alot about his fitting and what type of weapons he has fitted. Thus narrows the possible strategies the team can do in order to beat the enemy. Giving the commentators their fits would help alot, but they dont need it. Just as much you dont need to see everyting of your enemy in starcraft. Much is shown of the enemy of the way they are flying, even the warp in exposes a little bit (pointing at the brutix composition we saw who warped in at 0km).

Well yes, obviously once the ships start flying and the game is underway you can start seeing what the fits are capable of. However, at that point the commentators have already been talking for at least half a minute. As I understand it they have to keep talking, watch the stream which is as delayed as for us, use the client to look around and see what's happening, while trying to form theories about what's going on.
That's a lot to do at the same time.
Then also trying to explain why certain ships are better then others is simply too much I think. It will take their mind of what is going on and it takes up precious time better spent explain what is actually happening. Explain why setup x or ship y is good is better left to the after-match studio segment, which we will no doubt see return after the pre-lims.
I think last year they had a sort of good rhythm at some point. Put the two teams into categories, kite/rush/ecm/whatever, give an idea of what to expect based on previous showings of similar setups, point out stuff happening in the match, talk about the teams and/or setups while nothing is happening. Like what potential linchpins could be or fail situations for the team that has the upper hand.
I don't think it's realistic to talk about resistances and ammo. Sure with missiles you can now see what ammo is being used, same with lasers. But with hybrid and projectiles it will be hard to spot.
In short. I think it's just not feasible to get all the data fast enough to comment on such details and there really isn't enough time to hold short intros into certain practices. I expect once the studio segment gets added we will get some more in-depth analysis and explanations. |

I still wanna know if Kil2 has figured out how to differentiate beams and pulses. It's kinda a critical thing to be able to do if you're going to expend half a minute extolling the terribileness of a team's fit based upon your own inability to tell what the fit actually is.
Hint: fast RoF, pulses. Slow RoF: beams. Nevermind the actual turret models. Or the colors of the lasers indicating ammo types.
In any case, I'm totally still not bitter for being smacked by Kil2 for half of a match about my beam Harbinger when it was a pulse Harbinger back in AT8.
And for what it's worth, while I was at work Saturday and thus missed the tournament broadcast that day, I did watch Sunday and thought that whomever it was casting with MBIII was fine given the circumstances.
MB, to be honest man, it's not that you're terrible, it's that your casting feels forced. You're trying too hard to compensate for the fact that you don't have enough information to tell what's going on, and it comes across as you being a clown. That said, I don't know if this your normal self or not, as my only interaction with you in person was storming into your hotel room in Room With a View absolutely hammered with some of my Rote brosefs my last night at Fanfest and waking you up, and you were understandably rather unhappy with the situation. |

Well, sometimes resists are a huge deal. In the gallente vs gallente mirror that happened, for example. The Ishkurs wouldn't die, because they tank like 2.5k DPS on kin/therm and that's all you can shoot as Gallente. Instead the commentators said that it was the TDs that meant they couldn't hit a double-webbed and scrammed AF |

How about keep it simple.. after the first weekend how do you rank these guys? Here's my rankings:
#1 - Raivi: Well rounded.. good overviews of the action, pertinent comments on how the teams were matched up. #2 - Lazarus Telraven: After he got in the groove, he was great. Stuck to the facts, focused on the play-by-play. Great for a first time! #3 - Kil2: VERY knowledgable..yes suffered at times from "information lag", but seemed to have the most depth of knowledge. #4 - Zastrow: Seems to be a better "color" guy than a play-by-play guy. Most experienced..and yes did well enough. #5 - Michael BoltonIII: Weakest link. Yes painful at times.. MBIII could stand to remember that he is basically standing on a podium with 10,000 people listening to him speak. Yes, you WILL be nervous.. and please do not channel that nervous energy to your mouth and random thoughts about items in your environment or in that of your fellow commentator's environment (wall pictures? really?). Focus on the action.. if you have information lag.. say nothing ("better to be silent and thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt"). Perhaps you should focus on the tactical screen and let us all know where each teams ships are positioned. It's hard to see the tac screen on those displays.
I am a trained public speaker, and considering the live nature of what these guys are doing, I think they did OK. Whenever you get up in front of an audience of ANY size.. let alone the 10,000+ or so who watch this live.. you are going to be nervous. Focus on what you know.. and only that.. we want to hear what you have to say..and your experiences that give credence to your statements. You will never ever NOT be nervous.. but we have a saying.."It's not the butterflies you have in your stomach.. it's how well you can make them fly in formation!" {grin}
Keep working guys.. and yes.. I recommend you pair up and have one focus on "color" and the other on "play-by-play".. pretty good job all around, and hopefully you'll have the routine polished in time for the GROUP stage and FINALS. I'm enjoying watching. ---Des |

Only problem I have with the dear commentators atm is that they seem to have way too much stuff to look at. If they had the same screen we do they would have seen that cyclone take damage and not go "oh, whaaa, oh, a cyclone just died" - no, he died 20 seconds ago. It takes away the whole point of them commentating if they aren't aware of whats going on.
I think they miss out way too much staring at fits and what not. |

Its funny when MB starts off a long story while kil2 is trying to talk
But I agree with other people saying the commentators having too much to look at, the battlefeed is nice for the viewers but don't expect people to keep monitoring the battlefield, speed, point systems, hitpoints and ewar effects and keep talking non-stop. You'll end up with far too long stories (read my first line) that have like, no content |
