Ugh.
I understand that locking this thread could result in cries of censoring, but posts based on nothing but false assumptions never contribute anything, and only result in a continuous back and forth of "Servers are fine" vs "Im lagging".

just got back. noticed the above statment which replaced the gm quote from the petition. hmmm. what is there to hide? most responses are standard: log show nothing. is the petition suposed to self destruct after a player reads it.
was not gonna repost but saw the edit, so had to post.

dont think a top of the line server will cost less than 5% of that.
There really should be some kind of intelligence test before people get posting rights.
But Estel, if that were required, then the boards would be empty of any GM or Mod posts.

ok so lets adjust this for proper statistics
315000 x 14.95 = 4,709,250 per month
56,511,000 per year in usd.
Now lets start with the red list before we start saying buy more stuff!
Employees Iceland 25 Devs - ~ 50,000 / year 10 GMs ~ 20,000 year 10 misc employes 25-40,000 per year
so 1.7 million for iceland employees random guess
then how many work at ccp shanghai and ccp atlanta,
lets not forget about the white wolf employees so there is more money there.
now lets go into other costs. As we know ccp is contracting a lot of dust and incanra development to 3rd party companies especially if you ever ready any of my forum posts about the news i found.
so lets take another 15% off the total year revenue then lets take 1 % for beer budget then another 5% for putting on fan fest. then the special fees to make sure tuxford can't shut down the server. finally any other misc server maintenane fees such as, stuff melting exploding and overtime pay. dont forget building mainenance fees, patent and copyright fees since the game is being registered in several countries. Oh and ccp has to pay for bandwidth also.
So yeah my point is before shouting that they make this much money per year you need to see how much goes into maintaing the company its employees and the current server gear.
The only thing i think you for got on that list was rack rental and hardware maintenance costs for the Data center in the uk, thats going to come in arounf 500k per year depending on the contract.
Then theres the Hamster replacement costs.

so the server is not made to handle the game load.
please quit trying to add new flash to the game and make a major overhaul. the server use to handle the load. but with worm holes and other aspects that keep getting added. the game play gets worse. worm holes caused the server to die every hour. overhaul the server so when you get a new hair to add something new the game wont DIE.
Congrats! Since you seems to be so allknowledgeable CCP should hire you! With your reasoning the problems should be fixed by dinnertime today!

Another person who thinks more cash will solve any problem. Over spending governments all over the worlds prove that is wrong daily but it is still believed so they keep on spending. Ignorance is bliss.
If you read the original Op the line by the GM was misread (the syntax and context was misleading), although I can't show that now it's been removed. The GM did NOT SAY the cap was 50K that's not what he meant at all. He was saying that was the current load.
Try and base an argument on what was said not what you wished was written.

they stated at the fanfest last year they just spent a crap load of money upgrading the servers.
all the server nodes are 3.3gq 16gig ram machines.
the database is now stored on 2 terrabits of solid state memory
and the database servers got upgraded from 4 core to 12 core machines.

dont think a top of the line server will cost less than 5% of that.
and those figures are a very rough estimate. 50k pep is a average amound of accounts on at one time. players been asking for new server for years. quit buying bottom to med graded and suck it up and buy top of the line. most players have 2 or 3 accounts. people paying serious cash to play a quality game. game is around 6 to 7 years old. lot of die hard players. and new pep making new accounts everyday. everyone loves game. just want to see the love from the other end.
i hear there is talk of adding new regions for more traffic. with the load the server has now, the added regions and travel gonna crash it even more. please plan on the server upgrade before adding new.
You don't seem able to think at all, just blather about a topic you obviously know nothing about.

IIIRC the server is able to handle the load, its the database that struggles.
I do remember at Fanfest CCP saying that because of the sheer amount of database queries and the speed they need to take place at CCP are one of about 5 companies in the world (one other being Toyota i think) that hardware companies like IBM go to and ask if they can test their fancy new solid state hard drive or lump of ram under a huge load so they can get decent results to say what it can actually do. So its not as if they are running TQ on an 486 that dropped off the back of a skip lorry.
Besides, the game for the most part is fine, the fleet fight lag like any other post patch problem is a pain but CCP will fix it when they can and when they dont have to deal with the whiny little buggers that go on about it constantly.

Dogs, just wondering....
Have you read the frequent devblogs provided by our crack elite devteam when there are hardware changes/configurations/issues?
I remember a post once about new shiny Ramsan 400's, solid state hard drives! That's when the babies were something right out of sci-fi; now they're common place.
I wonder how it is that Blizzard has issues on a sharded universe every Tuesday, and yet CCP is doing pretty hot for an unsharded universe, daily.
I'd further ask: What experience and education do you hold in networking (particularly where clustering is involved), hardware and database maintenance... heck, how about Sarbanes Oxley compliance? (Hint: SOX is US-based )

[WTB] Linear solution for an O(n^2) problem.
Paying top isk or will trade for a Nobel prize.
Perhaps a more interesting (and realistic) way to discuss this is to ask, "what are you willing to give up to get a solution that scales better?"

place would be a lot quieter and imho not nearly as entertaining. still as an extra income stream selling posting rights to morons might be lucrative. (5% royalty on that would be gratefully accepted CCP)

That exactly is the real question.
If the problem is too complex to be solved efficiently then the side-conditions needs to be changed that the problem becomes efficiently solvable.
Sadly I haven't seen or heard ANYTHING AT ALL about this approach.
The only solution I have seen to the problem is to buy more and faster hardware. But the delays only the final meltdown, it will be always a race and in the end you will lose.
You need a different approach, an approach which is better than O(n^2). |
