Great, now I have this desire to get in my wife's gas guzzling SUV, grab the wife and kid, get my gun, go to the store to buy a carton of smokes and ammo, go to McD's and get a dozen Big Macs, and drive to the shooting range (at full throttle) for a fun filled family day. Then to top it all off, once we get home, I'll finish my fifth of Bacardi, get plastered, and make a run into losec and smack talk myself blue in the face.
And here I was trying to be a good little Californian and just love everyone.
But seriously, what is it to anyone what I or anyone else do with our bodies? The only people I am accountable to are my wife and the kid. Everyone else can kiss my shiny metal ass.
Surrender is still your slightly less painful option. |

I don't usually have a problem with people smoking, they pay for it and reap the 'benefits' of doing so, just don't do it in my face, which a lot of people are polite enough not to do and therefore I don't have a problem with it.
That said I did see a kid who looked around 15-16 lighting up a smoke on the train station on the way back from Cardiff last night and that looked pretty terrible to be honest, it was only 10:30pm too.

Originally by: Nebulous On the issue of Tabacco Tax in the UK, are you not all forgetting that you pay tax on everything you buy anyway? And that if a smoker did not buy ciggies they would buy something else with the money instead? Hence the money the PTB make from smoking would still get to them in some form or another anyway.
Yeah but as already stated, cigarettes are taxed at an increased rate than other products so if a smoker didn't buy ciggies they would buy other things that have a lesser tax, so the government would be losing a lot of money.

Originally by: Marha Khar DISCLAIMER. Before I get my rant on, I would like to make it clear that im in no way anti American. The views I put forward are based entirely on my interactions and nothing else.
Okay, first up, I smoke. Apart from my parents when I was 14(ish) nobody has ever decided this is an issue, apart from my government (uk), which banned smoking indoors in public, which I kinda get and in no way opposed. The way most people seem to think is that at 21 I'm old enough to decide how best to bugger my body sideways.
However, I recently travelled, through parts of America with some friends and a combination of a busted up car and my own (frankly awefull) motorbike through various parts of the us, and my god did I get allot of lectures for smoking. It seemed that no-matter where I stood at least one person would either A) Assume it was there place to tell me that I should be quitting Or B) That my habit was disgusting and that I should be ashamed. Maybe it's the whole perception of 21 being only just adult in some states ,or maybe I chose the wrong bars/places to smoke outside off, I dunno. Weirdly, my drinking was not so frowned upon, me being of a legal age and generally able to carry my drink.
Any explanations? I'm geniunly at a loss to explain this occurrence, hell if eve's Team speak is to be believed like 80% of Americans exist in a weed induced trance most of the time.
Oh and apart from that you guys are awesome, the first time me and my mates have been able to go out and not actually get randomly started on due to the British offences that usually get cited (E.g "looking at me funny pal"). Also, your women seem genuinly less likely to get into a state where they either kick off and attack someone or throw up on the nearest policeman.
I look forward to going back when I can
When I was in Europe, they said they knew I was Canadian because I didn't smoke. I didn't really know what that meant.
But as for your situation: Just call them fat and call it a day. Or call them out on judging you, especially where they clearly have problems of their own. If they weren't fat, I'm sure you could come up with something.
Oh, and I almost forgot. I just made you read my signature. |

This is part of a growing trend in the US where the simple majority runs over the minority, and they justify it based on medical costs (which is one reason so many oppose a government run health care system, where the majority would simply exclude any minority from treatments simply because their lifestyle may cost more). It can also be a part of well financed interest groups promoting what they think is good andbad.
For instance, the state where I live, it is law to wear seat belts in a care for safety, and the state just repealed a law requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets. It can be crazy depending on what interest group is putting up the most money at the time, and these interest groups then form public opinion. And in a case where the majority runs over the minority, my state banned smoking in restaurants and in bars where food sales make up 20% of business or more. The majority does not want to be inconvenienced to find someplace else to eat if they don't like the smoke in already segregated restaurants. I have walked into many places and walked out if I did not like it, but that is too much work for some people apparently.
I don't think where I live people would accost smokers. I can not tolerate cigarette smoke, I think I have a physical aversion to it because it gives me headaches and what not, but its not my place to tell other people what to do.
And - to another poster, if people stop buying tobacco because of taxes, the government will find something else to tax. The city of Philadelphia, PA wants to impose a 2 cent tax on every OUNCE of sugary drink (like soda).

Agreed, but if you minus the cost to the NHS and add the VAT collected from other items it would balance itself out, infact I believe it would tip the other way and create increased revenue to the treasury.

I think you're hanging around in the wrong crowds... Of course I've no idea really because I've never smoked. In any case I've never told anyone what they shouldn't do as regards to their cigarettes, it's their own business. I think the the people telling you off should be told off in return for being so flipping rude. Or just put your cigarette out in their eye. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

Yeah people seem to go out of their way to lecture you about smoking here in the states. I remember once, my brother and I were on a train trip across country. We had an hour stop in Minnesota and decided to chain smoke. We walk pretty far away from the train door in not on anyone trail towards the buildings. An older lady went out of here way to walk over and walk past us. As soon as she passed she started hacking her brains out and looking at us. My brother told her to "**** off", which was pretty funny.

Then you will not get so many comments. And obviously keep your smoking to to your own place of residence because no one wants to be around your ass stink.
It's really disgusting being around smokers because they stink.

You'd think that the stench of failure steaming off you would cancel out the smoke smell.

I was just pointing out that when you are 'only' trying or attempting to stop smoking, you are not putting your full will behind it, resulting most likely in a failed attempt. Using a extreme stance on this and putting yourself behind the decision goes a long way in overcoming the habit.
Attempting often enough ends up in a long row of failures and repeats just for the sake of calming your own conscience. After all, you're at least trying to stop smoking, even though you never really did.
So if you want to stop, do it, don't just try. --------

Edited by: Foxbite on 07/03/2010 10:05:41 Oh yes, random people walking up to you and telling you not to do something. Nothing annoys me more. People in this country aren't happy unless they're complaining about something. A few examples.
I drive a restored 1994 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71. I live in a rural area. When I do go into town, my modified exhaust system tends to turn heads. Well, I was sitting, idling at a stoplight between two apartment buildings a while back, and the cars traveling in the opposite lanes struck each other, quite hard. This caused quite an accident scene, blocking all lanes of traffic for at least 45 minutes. I'm also a Firefighter, I flicked my hazards on, and me and another firefighter buddy got out of my truck, and walked to the scene just to see if anyone was seriously injured (It was out of our town, legally we can't do any more than that).
Now, somewhere between me exiting my vehicle, and then returning to it, one of the residents in the apartment building decided it was a good idea to come out and tell me how loud my exhaust was, and how it was disturbing him in his watching his reality show. Never mind, the accident that occured right outside his place of residence, but the fact I was idling my engine as I waited for help to arrive.
He told me if I didn't move my truck, he would call the police for disturbing the peace. I had quite a laugh, seeing as my exhaust is PERFECTLY tame when idling, it's only when I squirt some gas in that V8 does she make some pretty sounds.
As he continued to rant, and overlook the fact I had nowhere else to go for the moment, I simply told him if he didn't grow up, nut up, and shut up, I'd back this truck up, and push his damn minivan right into his living room. He went inside and shut his blinds. 5 minutes later, I left, as the police had traffic cleared up.
My second rant, My state permits open carry of firearms, traditionally. I can't be seen anywhere without a springfield .45 on a paddle on my hip. 75% of people look at me like I'm some crazy ass terrorist or something, and 25% of them ask to see y CCW permit.
My standard response? (Excluding a response to an LEO) - "Why? You're not law enforcement. You don't own this building. You're a citizen, almost like me, the only difference being, I know my constitutional rights, and I practice them regularly. Which I can see, you obviously don't. Now I'm going to go about my business like I was before you disturbed me. Have a nice day."
My last rant...
I smoke Swisher's 100 little cigars occasionally. Whenever someone walks up and tells me I should quit (Which I smile, because I'm not addicted), I simply look, laugh, and say "Well, this is my body, not yours.".
Ignore the idiots... You'll live longer.
