DISCLAIMER. Before I get my rant on, I would like to make it clear that im in no way anti American. The views I put forward are based entirely on my interactions and nothing else.
Okay, first up, I smoke. Apart from my parents when I was 14(ish) nobody has ever decided this is an issue, apart from my government (uk), which banned smoking indoors in public, which I kinda get and in no way opposed. The way most people seem to think is that at 21 I'm old enough to decide how best to bugger my body sideways.
However, I recently travelled, through parts of America with some friends and a combination of a busted up car and my own (frankly awefull) motorbike through various parts of the us, and my god did I get allot of lectures for smoking. It seemed that no-matter where I stood at least one person would either A) Assume it was there place to tell me that I should be quitting Or B) That my habit was disgusting and that I should be ashamed. Maybe it's the whole perception of 21 being only just adult in some states ,or maybe I chose the wrong bars/places to smoke outside off, I dunno. Weirdly, my drinking was not so frowned upon, me being of a legal age and generally able to carry my drink.
Any explanations? I'm geniunly at a loss to explain this occurrence, hell if eve's Team speak is to be believed like 80% of Americans exist in a weed induced trance most of the time.
Oh and apart from that you guys are awesome, the first time me and my mates have been able to go out and not actually get randomly started on due to the British offences that usually get cited (E.g "looking at me funny pal"). Also, your women seem genuinly less likely to get into a state where they either kick off and attack someone or throw up on the nearest policeman.
I look forward to going back when I can

I dont smoke, but if strangers tries to lecture me I get angry and annoyed. Legal smoking people are old enough to face the consequenses smoking brings, and if you do start its your choice no one else. And that should be enough for others, who should care more about themselves than others.

While I agree that smoking is foolish, it isn't my place to lecture anyone...
It's currently your right to smoke. This is a free country. (well free-ish)

I'm from the UK and the ammount of times people have told me "thats bad for you, you shouldn't smoke" is ridiculous, so it ain't just USA. The thing that I have noticed is that it's usually ex-smokers who are the biggest lecturers.
Just before X-mas I had a woman complain to me about me smoking at a bus stop, even though I was stood outside of the bus shelter and my smoke wasn't blowing into it. She shut up when I told her to get into the bus shelter and shut the **** up. Can't smoke in buildings and enclosed public spaces and yet people still ***** about us smoking in the open.

They should design cigarettes that cause testicular cancer instead of (or in addition to) lung cancer and let the problem fix itself.
That said, I don't care about the smokers' health in particular (in fact I couldn't care any less about it), but it does bother me that a large portion of our economy is dedicated to a legal product that is designed solely to ruin people's health and get them addicted. It's the epitome of redundancy. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

Living in America and being a smoker can be a bit frustrating. I am still waiting on someone to pass a law that doesn't allow me to smoke in my house.
Whenever I get the standard smoking kills speech, my typical response goes along these lines.
Annoying do-gooder - "Don't you know that second hand smoke kills" Me - "Yes, but it obviously doesn't kill fast enough" Annoying do-gooder - "What do you mean"? Me - "You are still talking to me aren't you" Annoying do-gooder walks away in a huff.
Until we start prying whoopers/Big Macs from the hands of the morbidly obese, people need to leave my cigarettes damn well alone. Heart Disease is the number one killer in America, and the biggest risk factor is obesity.

Smoke if you want, but don't do it near me.
Oh, and jack up the excise duty on cigarettes and RINGFENCE it to treat tobacco-related illness on the NHS - why should I pay for your stupidity? :)

There was a story a while ago about a woman in the suburbs who was trying to get smoking banned in her neighbors house... 2 miles away. She claimed she could smell it every time he smoked and it was giving her cancer.
I think you'll find that these people who get in your face about smoking are the usual liberal ****s(not that all liberals are ****s) who assume anyone that doesn't live their lives exactly the same as them are idiots and need to be told what do or not do. In certain parts of America you'll get the same crap for eating meat, driving a car they feel is too big or wearing fur.

Edited by: Marha Khar on 05/03/2010 18:11:07 First up, yes im aware that smoking kills. If the warnings on the packs get bigger ill have to order using lines such as "Ill take a pack off Think of your kids please".
Also, if you want to punish those who end up on the nhs through so called self afflicted things then I suggest you stop treating people who buy fast cars, alcohol, motorbikes, fatty food, risky hobbies etc. Cigarettes are already taxed through the arse. The whole "You got lung cancer and you deserve to die" argument is flawed on so many levels I wont dignify it.
I typically avoid inflicting my smoke on others, and this stops most complaints. What I was talking about was people actively going out of there way to have a go. One woman actually CROSSED THE STREET. She acted like i was taking a dump in a bin or something.

And those figures don't count in the reduced costs from smokers due to a lower life expectancy. Anyone claiming that smokes costs them money needs to get their head out of their intestines. --------

This I can relate to. Tho I usually go for something about them and throw the same rudeness back in their faces. eg. If its a woman over a certain age a reply such as "You know you're really wasting your time spending money on all that makeup" tends to work quite well.
It used to really annoy me - now I just laugh (in their faces usually) at their offended reaction.

^^This is exactly why no government in the world is ever going to outlaw smoking. There is already such a high tax on cigarettes as it is. Unfortunatly not all of the revenue they collect from these taxes actually goes to health care.
They (governments) use that money for everything from repairing pot holes in roads, to building zoo's and parks.
Smokers (for the most part) understand the risk involved in smoking. As a smoker, who happens to be a nurse working in the respiratory field at a hospital, I see the end result of years of smoking all the time. However, I also see the end result of working around asbestos, chemicals, and living in an industrialized nation.
In truth, even non-smokers depend on smokers tax revenues to fund part of their health care (and other government pet projects).
So now lets raise taxes on big macs, whoppers, and all fatty foods. Lets start putting a tax on weight (as I pointed out above heart disease is the number one killer). We already have a tax on ETOH (alcohol).
Or, a rather novel idea might be to let other people live their lives. I know that is a rather unconventional train of thought, but if I am not depriving you of your persuit of life, liberty and justice why should I be deprived of my rights? We all need to worry more about ourselves, and living our own lives than we do being concerned about others.
It's like John 21:21-22. Don't worry about what others are doing, worry about yourself and what you are doing.

Cancer is the biggest killer but most illnesses are from a poor diet I use to smoke and dont, now before any of my stalkers give me a lecture about weed no I dont smoke it I use it in my food and if I have mentioned a joint it was a troll. Anyway I somewhat had the same issue which I got ****ed off at, it was like "hey dude we wont complain if you drink, but smoking is wrong", the double standards is just sooooooo not funny anymore.
I dont work well with smokers as I only quit last year and while it wasnt hard to quit it wont exactly be hard going back, I even considered starting again today, whats worse is I think hot people smoking naked is a real turn on sexy, too far? yeah I think I went too far FIRST!! |

On the issue of Tabacco Tax in the UK, are you not all forgetting that you pay tax on everything you buy anyway? And that if a smoker did not buy ciggies they would buy something else with the money instead? Hence the money the PTB make from smoking would still get to them in some form or another anyway.

According to the BMJ, smoking cost the NHS ú1.4-1.7 billion in 1991. I doubt it's lower now than it was then.
Smoking causes a lot of really expensive diseases; heart problems, cancer, strokes, limb loss.
It also ****ing stinks.

Re-read my original post - I was quite clear to say that the excise duty should be raised.
Go and investigate the difference between a tax and an excise duty and you will see what I am getting at :)

Stay classy, America!
I don't know about the UK, but in the States there's a big anti-smoking campaign going on (Truth.com or something). Anti-smoking messages are blasted at us from every direction. I really think people's attitudes are changing because of it.
Smokers aren't like drunks or drug addicts, because all the smokers I know are usually the first ones to say "I know smoking is bad for me, and I should quit" when the the topic comes up. They are almost like overweight people in that way (and people always get away with telling overweight people how to live their life). It's like an accepted shame that comes with it that they have to put up with.
So I think because of all that, people in the states are a little more embolden to tell you what you are doing is bad. Because for the most part, they have a pretty good idea you aren't going to flip out on them and tell them off.

As a half American/Brit, I get the vibe that USA is oddly less tolerant of smoking (and doesn't have socialised healthcare to give a logical reason for people being annoyed). However here in the UK, we apparently are more up tight about smoking than our european neighbours.
I don't care about smokers. Being around smokers and smoking a tiny bit myself has made the smell not bother me. Its their bodies at the end of the day.

I love smokers and fat ****s. Thanks to them, everyone can be a bigoted ******* and still be politically correct. Because I'm perfectly entitled to feel superior to people who are willingly and knowingly destroying their lives because they're too weak to stop it.
Just about every smoker I've ever talked to knows the health risks and knows he should quit. Ditto to morons who can't stop showing disgusting junk food down their throats. The only issue here is a lack of willpower. We should just stop all health benefits to idiots who destroy their lives on their own accord, and let natural selection sort that one out. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |
