often you need to fit a reactor or pdu to get a similar fit with HAM over HML on teh drake, which if oyu use a bcu on the HML fit instead of that fitting mod you get an even narrower dps gap.
drake with 3x bcu drones and HMLs is ~500, fit with hams and 2 bcus ~550. 50 dps diff for 3 times less range and ~30% less 'tracking'.
being able to hit falcons is very very handy :)
The HAM Drake may run into powergrid problems, but the HM Drake runs into CPU problems instead.
(My HAM Drake has 3 BCU.)

Why do people abbreviate the Ballistics Control System with "BCU"? I know the "U" is for "Unit", but...
Is there another system abbreviated "BCS" which is the reason for this alternate way of writing "Ballistics Control System"?
Just wondering.

It also depends on how you wish to fly it.
For a 'nano'-ish fit, with a few speed mods/implants, no DC type thing, Heavy missiles are much better, allowing you to kill smaller things that can slow you down much quicker than HAM's. The range also lets you 'run away while pelting them with missiles while a chaser can't hit you' that works really well when someone wants you dead.

Fits with all level 5 skills. Drop another ham for hm if needed.
But in my opinion, HML > HAM most of the time. However, I haven't had much success with T2 precision missiles... they just don't seem to hurt inties/AF much at all. |

It's very ship dependent as well. Most people care in relationship to the Drake, where I think a good case can be made for HMLs. Ships with missile velocity bonus and alternative anti-frig capability can get more use out of HAMs.
Experience will tell you which is better for your situation. I would start with HMLs because on most ships they take less support skills to use effectively, Guided Missile Precision notwithstanding. |

If after reading this and the plethora of other threads in ships and moduals you still have to ask that question then maybe the real question you need to ask is if you should solo pvp.  |
