I intend to start solo'ing level 4 missions soon. L3 have become way too easy.
I have 10 million SP and I fly an Apoc with this fitting (snipe-o-calypse) :
- 6 Tachyons + 2 Siege Launchers - 2 cap rechargers, 100MN AB, C5-L MEDIUM shield booster (rarely gets used) - 3 nanofibers, tracking enhancer, C4S (laser ROF/damage mod), targetting range mod (+16.5%)
Tachyons use long range crystal (IR to Radio)
Infiltrator drones (just so I have drones) : 15
My basic mission tactics is :
- warp to 60km and turn around right away - fire up the AB... get to a speed of 470 m/s - lock and fire at will
At ranges of 70+ km, Tachyons will even hit frigates (and kill them in 2-3 shots). Elite frigs I take down using a cruise missile or three.
Basically, killing the elite frigs first ensures you won't need warp core stabs.
I have targetting and optimal range in excess of 94 km and if I'm not careful I'll typically outrun the cruiser rats in less than a minute.
I never get hit other than by elite frigs coming too close, so I don't need reps or even a large shield booster.
This strategy works great in Dead Space missions too, since AB's work there.
Basically, shooting all 6 tachyons and leaving the AB on, I never get below 60% cap. And whatever happens, I always have an eternity to decide if I should warp away or not.
If I do warp away (very very very rare), I simply warp back to 15km of the mision BM : since I warp away after having covered 150km+, the rats are way far. I can recover cap and shield while I catch up with them.
I'd like to know if this kind of strategy is viable for level 4 missions ?
If necessary, I'll replace the cap rechargers with a targetting range mod (+50%) and a med-slot range mod, which should allow me to reach 120km targetting and shooting range. Eventually I'd replace the tachyons with Megabeams (named or tech II) and the damage mod with another nanofiber (to hit 500 m/s constant speed).
Do you think that would be OK ?

no tricks needed at all
fit up a permatank NH or eos or whatever
lvl 4's are easily doable these days , salvaging takes me more time then the mission itself

Edited by: diska on 13/11/2007 09:10:33 About soloing of 4 lvl:
It`s isn`t so simple for beginners. Raven for agentrunning isn`t so good, as for npc hunting in 0.0 systems. I lost 2 ravens when begin 4 lvl, then choose tactic. With intermediate skills, better ship to start with 4 lvl is Drake. His passive tank is more or less enough to tank almost all 4 lvl. Since you will train skills more, better tank it get. And 7x Heavy missile launchers, XR-3200 (Arbalest too expensive), would give enough dps even for BS. My last mission before I sit back on Raven, after two month since my first 4 lvl, was bonus room of Angel Extravaganza. 1 rewarp only, and I did it. I know that Drake can perform bonus room without rewarps. Why Drake? Because it can tank permanent, it don`t need to use capacitor as well. And still have the good defence. Raven can tank good, sure, but its Shield Boosters eat the huge amount of your capacitor, and after some minutes your shield just ends. Permanent run tank, based on Large shieldboosters, lasts more, but have less defence, even in compare with Drake. So if you don`t have enough SP in your weapon skills to kill all damage dealers at first minutes, you need to have good tank. Or use tactic `warp-kill someone-warp out; repeat`.

Edited by: Zaqar on 13/11/2007 09:44:11 This thread is from November 2004, just after lvl 4 missions were first introduced. It may surprise you to know that missions were actually challenging back then. We had no faction/deadspace/officer gear. No rigs. No Nighthawks No level 4 mission guides detailing exactly what to expect from each and every mission. The groups of rats in the missions were WAY bigger.
WCS had no penalty back then, and the amount of scrambling was far in excess of what it is now, so while getting used to the missions, it was really a good idea to fit them.
At the time, the forums were full of crying about level 4 missions being impossible and I remember Mongo's post here as one of the first to say stfu, grow a pair, fit accordingly and you can do them.
In closing, stop replying to ancient threads as if they were current, when you have no idea what you're talking about. Thanks!

/me on my 16th Security Kill mission ....
Level 4 missions can be solo'd but there are a few tricks.
(Sansha Missions)
Apoc's, Geddons sux ........ they simply don't give enough damage in a given period of time while trying to fend off the little / big beggers.
1) Warp Core Stabs are your friend ..... forget being matcho, unless you have 4 then your going to die more than once.
2) Sort by size and kill the little buggers first.
3) **Hint** they normally don't fire until you do ... so get in place, aligned to planet, opt range etc etc before you let loose.
4) Warp in ....... pick your target hit them hard and warp out .... you WILL NOT take them out in one go.
5) On multiple waves always be ready to leave when the last ship dies.
6) Ravens owns in these missions.
My setup ....... Raven
High
1 x E500 Nos 6 x Siege Launchers
Mid
1 x Large SB tech 2 1 x Shield Amp 2 x EMP Tach 1 x Therm Tack 1 x Cap Recharger 2
Low
4 x Warp Stabs 1 x Reactor Control 2
If it helps .... good ... if not Yap Yap
warp stabs? wtf? screws up ur targeting mate. 6 'arbelset' cruise launchers 1 drone aug 1400 mm artiliray cannon with rat specific ammo. c5 x large shield boost. 2 domination shield amps.3 rat spcific t2 hardeners.3 cpr 2 named bcu 3 ccc rigs 5 med t2 drones 5 light t2 drones. i can do serpents extravaganza in an hour. you raven pilots nevert hink of the drones. 5 vespa 2 can shed most bc kill a bs on thier own in 2 min kill most frigs in under 30 sec. hit the scrammers first fast and always then the webbers and work your way up. head towards the warp out spot as u fire never sit still.fire and warp out? if that is your tactic go back to lv 3 till u hit harder.6 kin cruise with my skill and set up do 390-417 hp per hit 2340 hp in an alpha strike + averge 135 hp from the arti + 575 hp from the drones first pass most bc cant take 2 salvos and bs 4 or less.alpha strike dosnt work so well on npc. hit 1 lancher every 1-2 seconds get a stream of death smashing into them while the drones peel them out of thier armor and wave bye bye to them

The last spawn is ridicules and no less than 3 combined ravens will be able to tank this.
Had this one last night, there is a 6th gate and upon activation the agent tells you "are you suicidal, you are going into uncharted space, blah, blah, blah" Many turrets including 8 cruise missile battery's which hit for 450 damage each even with decent resistances. Lots of normal turrets, including tech III, about 30-40 npc's with about 6mil's worth of battleships.
Upon jumping in you have about 5 seconds before everything locks and opens fire at once. It would be possible for a small squad, just need a super tank that can tank the damage long enough for the CM launchers to be taken down. 2 of us in ravens tried it for a laugh, got 2 of the CM launchers before warping away.
sounds totaly fun ill come help next time u get it :)

Originally by: Mongo Peck 1) Warp Core Stabs are your friend ..... forget being matcho, unless you have 4 then your going to die more than once.
This is very bad advice, actually. Stabs hurt your sensor strength very much AND stop you from being able to fit essential mods in your lows(weapon damage, cap mods, etc). So by fitting stabs, you actually increase the likelyhood that you'll have to use them - because your ship's ability to fight and defend itself has been reduced. Ironic? Yes!
Originally by: Mongo Peck 2) Sort by size and kill the little buggers first.
This is also bad advice. It works most of the time, but if you're in a mission like Gone Berserk, where the cruisers are the triggers which bring on more waves of rats, then shooting the smallest first can get you killed.
Originally by: Mongo Peck 4) Warp in ....... pick your target hit them hard and warp out .... you WILL NOT take them out in one go.
"WILL NOT"? Speak for yourself. Most people don't have to warp out during missions. With practice, it becomes a rare thing.
Sorry for offending you, but you shouldn't be speaking like you know what you are talking about yet . In good time, but definately not yet.
Not just trying to bash you, just giving my honest take on your (naive) advice.
