Hey all,
I've been playing for about two months and it's time to train up to assault frigates, but I'm not sure whether I want to go with Minmatar or Gallente. My drone skills are pretty decent (interfacing 4, etc.) and I can fit t2 hybrids, but I think I prefer the idea of autocannons to drones when it comes to small-ship pvp. Which race's assault ships do you prefer to fly? Thoughts on which I should go with?

The Ishkur is very nice, but so is the Jaguar. I say go for both, doesn't matter which you pick first.

Can't speak for the Gallente ships. But I do know that the Jaguar and the Wolf both have reputations for being solid assault frigates.
That said, you might think about the other ships you get with frigate V. For the Minmatar it includes the Hound which I think is regarded as the best stealth bomber in the game.
The Gallente stealth bomber tends to get no love.

Frigate V also leads to covert ops.
Hellios only has 2 high turrets so Probe T2 version would be better too.

I am training up for a Wolf at the moment, with 4 turrets it would be hard to beat.

Whatever AF you have the most fun flying. eft e-peen debates most of the time don't mean a damn thing. Too many other variables really to say what to what.
If you like the idea of ACs over drones, go for it. If their ain't a smile on your face when you flyin' an AF around.. time to get your butt into a different one or a whole other class.
My current (changes almost weekly) fav 'fighter' frig - RF Firetail. That slightly expensive bastard is a blast to fly to me.

Funny to see this post , well i say go with the jaguar it is way better i mean capless weapon passive tank , you only need cap for web point and propulsion and every cruiser and above seems to have a neut , if you happen to get neuted in a ishkur it's game over , there goes the tank and weapons .
Also Jag is a lot faster and can disengage easier and can speed tank a lot easier against gunship battlecruiser (or bs) and even missile .

Thats because the wolf sucks. Try that against a properly shield tanked neuting jag that lulz at your unbonused lights. But to defuse a potential prissing contest the ishkur is an awesome af too.

Both perform admirably, I'd say Gallente for preference. The Enyo is an incredibly overlooked ship, and is epic to an insane level when taking on big stuff. If you're not neuted you *will* survive.

Minnie and Galente are probably the two most interesting races to train frig V in with, and especially if you do both. Between their AFs (jag, wolf, ishkur), inties (ranis, claw, stiletto), bombers (hound), cov ops (cheetah) and the all powerful faction frigs (dramiel, daredevil) it gives you access to pretty much all the best-in-class frig sized ships in the game.

Manticor is the best SB btw.

TBH I think its because a new Gallente pilot would need to train torps to make the ship effective. And even a well established Gal pilot might have different/better priorities than Torp skills.

Love all the people that say Jag...uber passive tank..neuts dont effect it blah blah....but reli who goes in facemelt with an ishkur these days?
Rail fit it and mwd cap booster fit and just manage drones....too much bait nowadays you cant go into a belt and expect an easy kill..

Well Harpy is actually the best AF, but out of your choices I'd go Gallente simply for the Ishkur.
I can fly all four races and lots of experimentation has left me underwhelmed by the Jag and especially the Wolf (which looks ace on paper and/or against clueless dolts but sorely lacks in practice). I think it was as I mutilated my billionth Wolf with a Taranis on Sisi that I finally decided I wouldn't be bothering with one.

1) wolf
2) Ishkur
3) Enyo
4) Jag (I know allot of the forum *****s love it but its by far the worse af out of the 4, and I regularly beat all the other 3 with the wolf, I think most people just fail at fitting it)

Don't forget minnie and gallente frig skills also make available the Dramiel, the best frigate evah!

i dont have any personal experience in either ship, so cant say which would win, but surely your comment is ******ation at its worst Surely any minnie pilot would carry EMP/Fusion/Phased Plasma and Barrage
and prolly use Fusion in that situation
