I'm hoping this thread will take off and hopefully become a sticky someday.
I want members to post scams they have encountered in game so new players have a reference.
I'll start:
Courier contracts in 0.0:
I don't doubt there are many legitimate contracts into 0.0, but something I was not aware of when I started playing was that you cant always dock at a player owned station.
This has been exploited by contract makers offering HUGE rewards requiring HUGE collateral, for trips into 0.0. You survive the trip only to find you are refused permission to dock. Unable to complete the contract delivery, you lose your collateral and the crate usually contains worthless junk.

When selling a pricey module in chat channels someone contacts you making a good offer and then puts up a private buy contract at the location of your items, except they put the payment amount in the I will receive, instead of I will pay.
This leads the un-wary quickly reading the contract not seeing that the money is required instead of offered and handing the scammer 800mil+800mil item.

LOL and now that it's in C&P it is likely to die, since most of us both already know and don't care because we already know.

LMAO at the 'advice' here. It just proves people don't understand the mechanics behind scams, further encouraging their use. Signature removed, ♥ Parrots, but they aren't EVE Online sigs. Zymurgist |

The scam involving a thread in C&P that describes all the common scams in EVE, so people read about and stay on the look out for them, only to become vulnerable to all the new scams C&P thinks up because they were too busy protecting themselves from the old scams.
Oh wait, nvm.

The 'pretend to be a girl since this jerk already assumed you are and sell your 'rl' photo for isk scam'.
The 'get an industrial to contract you a fitted battleship and pay you 750m isk for fake killmails' scam.
The 'want a gift?' scam.
The 'station container full' of ships scam.
There are more but I need to buy booze before the shop shuts. Signature removed, ♥ Parrots, but they aren't EVE Online sigs. Zymurgist |

Edited by: Slimy Worm on 26/03/2010 18:22:11 Various service and information sale scams, like wardecs, alliance creation, friendly POS passwords. These are like the return ISK scam because the victim hands money to the scammer with the expectation of getting something for it later.
Investment scams. Sometimes these are advertised in Jita, but they seem rare there. High returns are often promised to appeal to greed, other times low returns are promised to look legitimate.
Stock scams. There's actually two types: Selling worthless stocks and not paying for stock once it's sent.

how about make up some fake 'impending doom' crisis and then levy a new or incresed tax on all productive players to presumably 'save' them from the fake crisis, while actually using the tax money to buy votes from non-productive players.
um, wait, that's not Eve, even though it is a scam

*sighs* We both know this was no scam but your occasional alcohol instilled conviction that EVE is an RTS game and that you needed some cannon fodder for a large scale assault. We can only start working on your rehabilitation when you accept the fact that you've got an alcohol problem, Triple.
p.s. You missed your AAA meeting today. Everybody was very disappointed.
