Drinking a 10 year old, single malt Bushmills. Very nice.
Post your favourite whiskies. I got a birthday coming up and need some suggestions.
Contemplating an old bottle of Glenfarclas if anyone has any opinions on it (never had it).

Maker's Mark. One of the best whiskies ever.
In my youth with friends it was beer, shot of maker's mark, beer, shot of maker's mark, repeat until you can't walk anymore...
Now a days it's water and coffee for me though :P

I'm more of a scotch guy...but on the occasions I do go out and buy a bottle of whiskey or bourbon...I've been a fan of Woodford Reserve for a while now.

Mm, whisky... Could use one right about now. Have to go buy a new bottle when I get home from work.
As for favourites... Ardbeg (if I'm feeling rich; Uigeadail) and Talisker comes to mind. In general, you can't go wrong with the Islays. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Mackmyra, a fairly new Swedish whisky. A bit young as expected, but promising.
No ****ing ice, possibly a few drops of water, room temperature please. Cheers.

Yeah, but I dunno, I just can't drink anymore, 1 or 2 drinks a year for me now a days lol. I'm definitely a cheap drunk now. Spent too many years high on various drugs, drunk or both all the time, glad I got it out of my system early. It's odd and cliche, but being sober all the time is almost like being high for me.
My wife on the other hand...lol she's always got Baccardi mixed with something.
Never was much for scotch, but I did like Glenlivet or Chivas Regal. Live it up for your birthday and spend some extra $$ :P Glenfarclas is like $150/bottle for some really aged stuff :P

Was thinking of buying a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask (very nice) today, but now I'm curious about Glenfarclas since I've never had it either. So, I'll buy one and let you know what I think.
Not sure how old "old" is to you though. Personally I can't decide if I should go for 15 or 25 years (those are the ones that the stores keep in stock around here), the latter is pricey but oh so tempting. I guess I'll decide once I'm there.

Then as an Irishman....you need to broaden your horizons, because there are better irish whiskey's out there then Jameson's. Bushmills 21 is a great irish whiskey. Midleton is right up there as well. (The first being a single malt and the latter a blend)
To answer someones question earlier about my favorite scotch. I'm a cigar smoker and I favor a slightly spicy start. A bolder scotch works for me. I'm partial to Laphroaig quarter cask. I have to be honest though....Lagavulin is way too strong for me....like I'm drinking a peat bog. Oban 10 is a nice scotch if your looking for something a little more mellow.

Nice. I look forward to your review. Since its my 21st, I will be buying a 21 year old bottle. Thinking of having a gentlemens club theme: wearing suits, drinking whiskey and smoking cigars. Debating if I should tell the girls to dress as ladies, or high class prostitutes.

Bushmills is a better irish whiskey imo. Jamesons is nice, but its almost too smooth and mellow. Jamesons in dublin is a fun tour through.

Yeah. I'm far too young to be a connoisseur, but I would like to try.
Used to drink it straight 40% but when I got this bushmills I was told to water it down to 20%.
Still have a long long list of scotch to drink. Maybe I should just keep drinking irish whiskey, that list looks shorter.

I always liked Glenmorangie, and Highland Park I like as well.
Caol Ila for those special occations.
I never use ice or wather tho, imo it takes away too much of the taste and feel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Mister Flibble on 26/03/2010 11:09:08 Actually, adding a little water to whisky can amplify the taste/smell.
Don't remember the exact chemistry behind it, but it's true.
Edit for linkage. Specifically, this part:
Quote: If you add water, you reduce the solubility of compounds such as the esters and increase their volatility. So do this, if you like the fruity aroma. In contrast, the phenolics are water-soluble and the volatility of these is reduced, so if you like the smoky peaty aroma, drink your malt whisky neat. If you add ice, all the compounds will be less volatile û so the aroma will be reduced with less effect on the taste.

Heh, review. I'm not that much of a connoisseur! I will say this though:
I decided to be a cheapskate and went for the 15 year old. Apparently that one's still expensive enough for the store to keep it in a locked cabinet, which made me feel all classy and special when I asked them to open it for me. Good thing I combed my beard before I went.
Fast-forward past lunch and return trip.
I was surprised by how fruity it was. Pulled the cork and all I could think was "hey, did I buy whisky or white wine?" Tried it neat, after the first tiny sip that wine aroma settled into its place. Maybe that was because I went numb, because let me tell you, this one's got a kick to it! Not overly smoky, but the oak... Like taking a bite out of a tree, and a bit too much for me. A little bit of water, even just a few drops rounds it off nicely and brings out all the other flavours. Still trying to figure those out though, all this stuff about nuts, dried fruit (ok, so they got that right) and other nonsense is just, well, nuts. I'll agree that it's complex though, been a long time since I felt such a strong sensation of burning palate and tons of sweet flavours I can't identify simultaneously.
Would I buy it again? Possibly, once I finish the bottle. That'll probably take a while, this is most definitely not a whisky you drink a lot of in one sitting. Very nice though, absolutely delightful in small quantities and I look forward to getting to know it better. Remember, this was just a quick tasting under less than ideal circumstances.
Would I recommend it? Hmm, tricky. I have to say, it's probably a bit of an acquired taste, at least compared to the other whiskies I mentioned. Well worth it once you've learned to appreciate it, but it's not for everyone.
And don't forget, this was the 15 year old one. Expect 21 to be a little different (rounder, more developed)

I used to drink whiskey up until just a few months ago. Then I discovered fine imported vodka and am currently enjoying a nice bottle of Keter One for mixing though Chopin is another favorite when I want to do shots with its smokey flavor. Haven't looked back.

I'm a bartender and scotch is the only booze that I'll toss if I pour it by mistake (instead of poured down my neck like most other mistakes). Even the good stuff, Johnny Walker Black, Chivas Regal.
Irish Whiskey, Bushmill's in particular, is my favorite. My boss actually stopped carrying Bushmill's in our bar when he realized I was the only person drinking it. A few years back I bought my brother a bottle of Bushmill's 21-year-old Single Malt.
Big fan of spiced rum, too. We carry one called Sailor Jerry's. It's aged in cherry casks that give it a very distinct flavor. And it's 96 proof.
