I seriously doubt a migration of that scale happening.
imagine the size of the multiple database..
It'll never happen, CCP is a Microsoft shop through and through. It won't happen for political reasons.
Database migrations on this scale do happen and have happened with good results. There's plenty of PostgreSQL installs out there handling more load than CCP's database without issue on a day to day basis. Don't think SQL Server's the only large scale RDBMS. -- Ix Forres EVE Application Developer EVE Metrics | accVIEW | I Tweet |

Well this sucks but you know what? I am happy too because this is the first time I have been told WHY I can't login when there is a server-side error. Other companies won't even admit there was a problem if the problem only lasts a short time... yer.. you know who you are.. *cough* SOE *cough*..
Hope it really does come back only at 2:00 UTC... broken promises are hard to forgive.

A planck bubble has just collapsed. Do you have any idea what that means? Eve universe has disintegrated into primeval chaos. Trillions of intelligent beings has disappeared as if they never existed. And all you care about is you mega?

You're talking about the area that CCP is the case study of. Microsoft is quite proud of CCP's performance, and when you appreciate the complexity and limitations of such a system, I'd say it's pretty damn good.

Originally by: Sordeo Regius Time to upgrade to RedHhat 5, MySQL clusters with NIC bonding? All the cool Internet(s) companies do it.
...mainly because they perceive that sort of setup to be the "in" thing to do, from a technology standpoint, and all on a x86 commodity platform, no doubt.
I have upwards of 120 (at last count) Dell R905's and they crap DIMMs and shiat CPUs on a regular basis... hell, we had to add nodes to our DB clusters just so that the impact of any one node going down is lessened because of just the hardware sucking. There goes the commodity hardware price advantage.
The Sun *coughOracle* clusters, though... *a* node in *a* cluster *might* have a hardware failure of some sort over the course of a year. If it's a DIMM or CPU, chances are the OS (Solaris) will immediately stop using the faulted item and carry on.
You get what you pay for.

'unscheduled down time', yeah cool the USA nuclear regulatory commission uses the term 'aggressive dis-assembly' for what just-plain-folks call an explosion.
Hmm is there a connection between CCP-speak and a totally-hosed-dangerously-powerful-yet-incompetent USA regulatory body? Survey says...

Most of you have really no idea what that means for a system and database like eve. There are simply to many variables to be able to offer anything higher than 3x9, and 4 and 5 nines are out of the picture if you are using SQL and not a custom DB application.
CCP, good luck... you need it

OMG first!
I don't know what to say, this is so unexpected. Well, first of all i'd like to thank my cat, we did it little fella! And also my legions of fans. I couldn't have done it without you guys.
Oh wait, there's a guy waving something at me, one sec.
So, it seems i'm not first after all, and this entire thing has just been yet another terrible embarassment for me. Hmmmm.... any of you guys able to spare some change for the bus? I spent everything i had on this post, and as you can see it's not working out so well. I can pay you back in Rifters or something later.
Man, my ex girlfriend is going to love hearing about this. Always talking **** about me. When's the ole Professor going to catch a break?

It's been a while since I last did any programming, but CCP might want to use the following code somewhere:
10 CLS 20 ON BREAK GOSUB 40 30 GOTO 20 40 PRINT "ERROR - EVE WILL RESTART SOON" 50 RUN "EVE" 60 RETURN

Server's up and there appears to have been a limited rollback on some pilots. We lost a little time and effort but our ships are all safe. Good stuff.
