It'll never happen, CCP is a Microsoft shop through and through. It won't happen for political reasons.
Database migrations on this scale do happen and have happened with good results. There's plenty of PostgreSQL installs out there handling more load than CCP's database without issue on a day to day basis. You're talking about the area that CCP is the case study of. Microsoft is quite proud of CCP's performance, and when you appreciate the complexity and limitations of such a system, I'd say it's pretty damn good.

...mainly because they perceive that sort of setup to be the "in" thing to do, from a technology standpoint, and all on a x86 commodity platform, no doubt.
I have upwards of 120 (at last count) Dell R905's and they crap DIMMs and shiat CPUs on a regular basis... hell, we had to add nodes to our DB clusters just so that the impact of any one node going down is lessened because of just the hardware sucking. There goes the commodity hardware price advantage.
The Sun *coughOracle* clusters, though... *a* node in *a* cluster *might* have a hardware failure of some sort over the course of a year. If it's a DIMM or CPU, chances are the OS (Solaris) will immediately stop using the faulted item and carry on.
You get what you pay for.

Most of you have really no idea what that means for a system and database like eve. There are simply to many variables to be able to offer anything higher than 3x9, and 4 and 5 nines are out of the picture if you are using SQL and not a custom DB application.

Call whatever you want. I had a DG invuln, and 2 weeks of anomming loot and salvage in these cans, anchored at a safespot. They were at a safespot because I used to have them anchored at a PoS, until the owners of the PoS got a message from CCP telling them that it was causing server issues, and they need to be removed. I was too tired to be in control of a ship one night, and deleted the bookmark I had for the cans, instead of the bookmakr I had for the wreck field.
