..why the vast majority of the native English speakers who play this game cannot understand the difference between the words 'lose' and 'loose'.
As you know this word is used alot on the EvE forums and in 99% of the the cases where it is used people always type 'loose'. Why FFS!
'Arsenal are crap and will lose this weekend'
'I met your mum on the weekend and she's rather loose isn't she!'
All people whose first language is not English may ignore this post!

I find more irritating the confusion between your/you're and their/there/they're to be honest.
(especially for your/you're, if people are too lazy typing a few more letters, I wish they would just type "u r" - makes the eyes hurt less. But laziness makes an odd pair with wits now, doesn't it?)
And English is not my native language. Maybe the fact that you first learn to write/read and then talk makes a big difference to the amount of blood coming out of your eyes reading internet forums....

Source?
And why should someone get drunk in front of their computer AND play a game where loss has consequences? Are you implying that poor grammar/spelling is correlated with low IQ as evidenced by the behaviour of the Eve players? Interesting....
p.s. Getting drunk and making an ass of yourself can be fun but why not do it outside in a bar/pub/restaurant/party? You may get lucky... In eve you may get that lucky kill too but look at fun/risk/return ratio of the above two scenarios.

My first thought upon reading your title was, "It's LOSE, you ******!" My mother was a grammar **** when I was growing up and all of these things were beat into me so much that it now bothers me when others **** up. I always thank her for turning me into a pretentious douche whenever this comes up. I think I may go call her now as a matter of fact.

While I'm at it, I'll post the biggest offender of all time in the English language:
"John and me went to New York."

I remember doing the "lose"/"loose" thing back in grade school.
I cant speak for other countries, but in the US education in basic English is lacking. We don't even teach diction which is why Americans have such a variety of accents.
It's pretty pathetic, but what can you expect when our former President was known for statements like "Is our children learning."

TBH, I expect better from the ESL than "native speakers."
If it helps, you can venture into M&D where you see their grammatical skills dwarf their economic knowledge.

Not everyone's good at spelling. I suspect even less give a crap about checking their errors on an internet spaceship forum. The important thing is to get your point across clearly enough that it's understood. This doesn't even account for any dyslexia or language barriers.
The amount of time people waste correcting each others written word is ridiculous and suggests a poorer intelligence in those nitpicking than those who misspell and get on with business.
The OP is made at least mildly amusing by coming from someone with a poorly spelled name.

@Gladys Pank
I dont think that you should be required to be 'good' at spelling to realise the difference between 'lose' and 'loose', and the correct spelling is actually less time consuming to type, so think of that as a bonus!
'and suggests a poorer intelligence in those nitpicking than those who misspell and get on with business'
What a ridiculous statement to make!
'The OP is made at least mildly amusing by coming from someone with a poorly spelled name'
You are really clutching at straws to find some sort of retort here eh!? Perhaps you could tell me what a correctly spelt avatar should be?
However im reasonably confident that next time you type the word 'lose' you'll spell it correctly - job done :)

I'm not really clutching at straws. Just giving my thoughts. You can take the last sentence as a poor attempt at humour but on the rest I remain entirely serious about.

How is it ridiculous? Your willingness to sweep aside a perfectly reasonable opinion is disappointing.

I used to care about my grammar and spelling. After 4 years of Eve, I no longer care. As long as I type something relatively close and the people in corp chat can understand what I'm saying, I don't bother correcting typos.

The question I have to ask you is this. If I say "Today I will loose a fight" or "You are really lose between the ears" Do you still understand what I am actually saying?

This is EVE and deliberately trying to appear less intelligent or capable than you are is frequently clever metagaming.
Those who want an offline EVEGate address book, without using paper, can find the tech equivalent of this food fight over in the technology forum over a HTML 2, non-W3C application, PHP application.

A further mistake that native english speakers often make in EVE is the "I could care less" VS. "I couldn't care less". I'm not actually a native english speaker myself but with a small amount of logic it should be clear which one makes sense and which one doesn't.
I believe I also saw that mistake often in the EVE: Empyrean Age novel (which really is a bit of a joke tbh - people that write books should have a decent grasp of the language or at least get their books checked by someone with good language skills).
