Google logs data on Wireless networks while passing by in the Street car.
Oh dear. How arrogant is this statement, by the way?

From certain personal experiences directly with that company, all I can say is that you might be better off using Yahoo or something. That'll be all. ________________________

Not really, but I'd rather not have some company which has had several issues protecting it's own data from China and other attacks have information on me that can be put to illegitimate use.
If companies cannot protect their own ass(ets) why should I trust them to keep the information they have on me any more secure?
This is the reason i don't use Googlemail/Gmail, this is the reason i do not use Chrome, this is the reason i do not use Wave, this is the reason i do not use Googledns, and it's the reason that i only use Google search when i absolutely must. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

G-Man sort of has a point though, you know ? If you have absolutely nothing to hide (and I mean zero things to be so embarrassed about, things you wouldn't dare share with random people), privacy would be a moot point.

Who and what do you use then?
As far as I can tell any single browser/e-mail provider can do this to you. Not that I think that this is acceptable; seriously though, more so then yesteryear, it is of the utmost importance to protect your own ass.

While Google do lot of questionable things, this really isn't one of them. The only way someone is going to see your MAC address/SSID is if they are already in physical proximity to your network... which incidentally is the point. -

A bit of a non story tbh, I would be more concerned with Eric Schmidts comment about not needing to worry about privacy if you have nothing to hide, by that rationale only people with something to hide should be allowed privacy.
Last thing I need is some f**king bellend telling me I can't have any privacy because it doesn't fit his world view.
As for what people know about you, I'll bet Visa know just as much about me than Google.

You do realize that Google saves every single search ever performed (meaning every term or terms that was or were entered) ? Also, Google keeps all GMail content of your account, even if you decide to "delete" it? I find that extremely questionable to be honest, because that's something I don't really want. And I don't care if it improves search results. ________________________

We all have passwords to hide, encryption keys to keep save, or just private e-mail that should not be read by all.
The statement by the CEO was probably addressed at some paranoid press folks, who then took his sentence out of its context, because the CEO did not kiss their butts.
Like, for example my above statement can be reduced to: The statement ... addressed ... their butts.
So do not lose your temper over this. It has too many dumb press reporters who for once in their life want to be a hero. --

The original source is CNBC, it was an off hand comment made when he was questioned about how much access Google has to information about individuals that use Google services and whether it was an invasion of privacy, the comment was offhand but shows an amazing lack of tact and shows an a disturbing truth about Google and its attitudes.
On the other hand you can help but think people invite this on themselves, I had a friend ask me why I never responded to any of his requests on face book, I told him I never use it and my wife made the account for me, I don't like the service for various reasons and if he had something important he had to tell me to pick up the phone and call me or come and see me, he thought it was funny and that I was stupid and what harm was it, he honestly thought I was being ridiculous.
I then asked him what he would do if some total stranger approached him in the street and asked him questions like where he lived, was he single, did he have any photos of himself on holiday or whatever, he said quite quickly and without any hint of irony he would tell them to f**k off, maybe even report him to the police, I said but you'll put the same info on face book where millions of people you don't know have access to it to do as they please with it and you don't see a difference.
He didn't see the difference or my point.
The attitude of my friend is probably what encourages people like Schmidt to do and say what they think with regards to privacy.
It never ceases to amaze me what people think or are willing to accept if it's packaged properly. I'm in my 40's and I know people who can't live without their mobile phone, the very same people who mocked them when they came out and laughed at others for buying one and convincing themselves they had a need for it.
To me social networking is a bit meh, face book, twitter, beebo, whatever, I don't care, but some people think it's great so let them have it, I'll just stick with being a social networking Luddite and worry more about people like Schmidt telling me I have no right to privacy.

It's even being used by employers nowadays. Someone at my last workplace almost got fired over something he said on Facebook, only reason he got off the hook was because he deleted it and when the time came they couldn't actually prove it (despite everyone seeing it)

Why would Google want peoples MAC addresses? I do not understand what legitimate use a company would have for it. As for Eric Schmidt saying "Internet users shouldn't worry about privacy unless they have something to hide", that is just ridiculous. We have a right to privacy and living in the UK there are only certain circumstances where the police can intercept my mail, enter my property e.t.c. Yet a company thinks that because only people doing wrong have something to hide they can do whatever they like.

Your recent application for a job promotion bas been cancelled.
Reason: The employee expressed his opinion on a game forum and statistically has a 1.3%-chance to suffer from an online game addiction. In his expressed opinion does he show signs of general paranoia, denial of modern Internet technology and possibly terrorist activities (=> "nuke").

I guess this comes down to what data they actually collected. If they were just collecting numbers like "how many poeple use wireless?" then i've no problem with that. Could be anyone.
If they were collecting data that answers "Does {real name} have wireless?" then i'd have an issue about it.

Haha I love the arrogance of driving onto private property to take pictures available to public perusal. I can't wait until they decide that all those security cameras in the UK are perfect for their next project, called "Privacy is for Loosers." What I really want them to do is start documenting floor plans so that I can go on to the net and know exactly where I'm going without having to think about it on site. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00
