So atm I live in Maine and isn't to bad but I'm looking for a change. I'm just getting a general idea of where I'm gonna setup so I'm in no rush.
My credentials: 23, no wife, no kids, no bills, english speaking, eletrician.
I love the cold weather (gotta keep my gtx 480 cool) , so I was thinking Canada but I don't speak french, only english. I love rural areas and would like to purchase a couple of acres of land ($200,000+ saved up). I can always find a job so I'm not worried about that. I also don't want to live in a liberal town/city/state. So high taxes and liberal people aren't my thing.
I'm asking on the forums to get some personal expirience from people who live/lived there because a place my look good on paper but not so much irl. So any ideas would be much appreciated Thank you
edit: Oh yea the area also has to have a fast internet connection

Bleh, none of my rich relatives knows who the **** I am :(
Well then, you my friend should definitely exploit your good fortune to it's fullest and make sure you can retire at a really young age.
If I had my druthers I'd be living somewhere outside Santa Fe, NM, but that's probably too warm for you.

If you're thinking of Canada there is only one province for you: Alberta
Think of it as the Canadian Texas
French speaking in Canada is more or less contained in Quebec. If you don't live in Quebec you can get by no problem with only English
Not to mention politics. The Canadian attitude for politics is basically apathetic. No one really cares about it too too much. But if you want a conservative flavored area then, again, Alberta. Though conservatism in Canada is akin to moderate liberalism in the US so maybe not. Not to mention not having a PST which all the other provinces have. GST is still there though.
Also if you want rural living you can find that in any province in Canada. Lowest population density in the world I believe.
Fast internet is also a non issue unless you really want to live in a rural area. Just live on the outskirts off a major city for what you want. ~ CURRENT INTERNETS = + 105017 |

Northeren Ohio or Indiana is your best bet as they are still fairly rural with lots of secluded farmers that you will never have to meet. Most towns will have all the normal national stores so getting supplies is as easy as living in the suburbs and probably less of a hassle to get to. Cold snowy winters and mild stormy summers are the norm so you should have no cooling issues. Hell using the card as a space heater will probably save on your natural gas bill.

If you take a portion of that money and do something smart with it, you could easily retire at 40 or 50 yrs old as opposed to 65/70 like most people.

Yup. Especially if you work hard up until you hit 40. Then you can literally retire like someone who slaved his entire life away for a fat pension. The trick though is to stay unmarried until you get to that point as kids and a young wife are the prime cause of having to slave away your life for a fat pension. It's the only way to pay for the divorce, alimony and child support. Not to say you should always be single or never marry at all. I'm just saying try to not do it until you can afford it.

With that amount of money you could even retire in a former-communist Easter European country. 200k USD... that's, like, what, 30 year's worth of the average wage ? Somewhere around there anyway. You could buy a nice house in a medium-sized city and still have enough leftover cash to live relatively comfortably for decades. Who cares if you don't speak the language, most people speak at least some English Also, plenty of jobs to be had as supervisor/manager for one of the factories/whatever owned by some of the multinationals around here, since they prefer non-locals... but it won't pay that much compared to what you already have.
P.S. We even have villages without a canalisation system (septic tanks ftw) but with broadband internet

New Brunswick is the only bilingual province in Canada. Quebec has language laws which require restrict the English language.
Alberta has no PST (same as GST), and I believe is the cheapest province to live in. IIRC the tax is a 10% flat tax, and health care premiums were scrapped. ($260 a year)
I don't live in B.C. but I hear it's pretty good. Alberta and B.C. are both "have" provinces, which makes them the best to move to atm.

We "recently" (as in, about 10 years ago) had a "flood" of Italian early retirees moving into Romania (since the languages are really, really close, so you can easily learn the other in a couple of months). Their retirement pay (on which they could barely live back at home) made for a pretty good living over here, in a rented apartment with most of the reasonable luxuries, even a hired maid to clean up and cook. Now, it's no longer quite that much of a difference, but still noticeable.
You could easily rent a nice apartment and live off in above-average comfort in a medium-sized city (100k-200k inhabitants) for around 500 USD per month total (you'd probably need closer to 1k/mo in Bucharest for comfort in a smaller apartment - that's the capital, 2+ mil inhabitants).

Well if you want to move because your looking for a change, Europe would be it, but only if your willing to learn another language.
The places I would look at, would be: Norway Finland Sweden Poland Romania Bulgaria
Through my travels in Europe, these places stick out the most. The people were very friendly and most spoke english. Finland though would be my top choice. The summers are mild and the winters are cold.
If you are not interested in another language, the places I would look at are: US: Montana Wyoming Idaho North Dakota Alaska
Montana is my top choice. The people were nice and the pace was slow. You could drive a short distance and be no ware.
Canada: British Columbia Alberta
Gods country when you travel north, but the cost of living is higher in Canada.
My self, I would like to get out of PA and move to Montana. The average cost of land is not too bad until you get into the mountains.

Dood, come to Utah. Plenty of rural areas AND its cold. Hek it freaking snowed today.
But on a serious note, you might wanna try north west Washington state. Lived up there for 2 years and absolutely loved it. Price wise though you won't get a couple acres with only 200 grand... :(
anyways, my 2 cents.

Yea, because the very next time I'm in AZ someone will surely stop me as I won't look like I'm from around them thar parts. Hint: I'm so white I reflect light, my ancestry is Irish with a tad bit of Native American. Wanna bet dollars to donuts I could wander around the entire state looking clearly out of place and even LOST from now until the end of time and not one person would *EVER* ask me for my PROOFz because ~ why?! ~ I'm not a scary brown person. If you don't get that, you're lying to yourself, or stupid. Neither of which concerns me.
So yea, back on topic:
